Berlin (white vinyl 7")
Cat: MUTE 621. Rel: 30 Oct 20
  1. Berlin (4:09)
  2. Dirty Boy (3:10)
Review: A Certain Ratio have returned with their most tight and funky album, possibly ever, recently, and it is steeped in 40 years of ACR DNA. Now you can grab two of the standout singles on this fine, limited edition white 7" thanks to Daniel Miller's essential Mute. Opener 'Berlin' is the second single from that album, ACR Loco, and has breezy vocals and Trillin riffs over tight drum work. 'Dirty Boy' is riddled with squelchy synth funk, with popping drums and a great vocal performance that will get any party vibing.

  5. Loosen The Moorings (3:29)
Review: After some great ones by Desert Sound Colony and label co-heads Alec Falconer and Tiago Walter, Ba Dum Tish are back with another curious release by the enigmatic Active Research. It's the sound of the '90s underground on the A side, with the dark drum & bass epic 'Howweryuu' and its Optical / Alex Reece influence, followed by the UK electronica throwback sounds on 'Apexxx North'. On the flip, things take a more abstract turn on the deep and dystopian electro bass journey "Collection Of Noises" followed by the sublime ambient bliss of "Loosen The Moorings".

Review: Trauma Collective returns with four cuts of decidedly hypnotic and abstract techno from ever-prolific ASC. Rounding out the last decade with a string of stand-out releases on his own imprint, Auxiliary, the San Diego producer brings his cerebral sonic aesthetic to the fledgling Madrid label. "Loop Research" showcases a singular artist unbound by tempo and at the top of their game.

De:10.09 (limited 180 gram purple vinyl 12")
Cat: ASGDE 028C. Rel: 27 Nov 20
  1. Henkhisesui (5:30)
  2. Palaeeudyptinae (6:01)
Review: A year after it first appeared in stores, De:Tuned has decided to reissue the ninth instalment in their terrific De:10 series of singles and EPs, this time on purple vinyl. It's a rather special one, because it contains two early, previously unreleased 1992 productions from Andy Turner and Ed Handley, not as Plaid, but rather under the rarely used Atypic alias. A-side "Henkhisesui" is simply superb. It opens with a deliciously atmospheric intro full of dreamy ambient chords and bubbly electronic melodies, before introducing a crunchy, early IDM style beat pattern and stabbing analogue bass. The marginally longer "Palaeeudyptinae" is warmer and more tactile, with the pair peppering a skewed, post-hip-hop beat with blissful electronic melodies and glassy-eyed synthesizer sounds.

  1. Behave (6:10)
  2. Starts To Fall (7:21)
  3. Struck (5:28)
  4. Isolation (5:18)
Review: To our ears, Kris Baha's debut album, Palais, was one of the most underrated sets of 2019. This follow-up EP on his own Powerhouse label explores similar sonic territory, joining the dots between the clanking but funky mid-80s work of Cabaret Voltaire, the surging EBM heaviness of Nitzer Ebb and the more chugging, hallucinatory end of the retro-futurist electronic music spectrum. Highlights are plentiful, from the sharp, rising and falling lead lines and stuttering machine drums of opener 'Behave', to the bubbly, mind-altering drug-chug of closing cut 'Isolation', via two superb slabs pf muscular EBM headiness, 'Starts to Fall' and 'Struck'.

Raw yet polished, experimental yet undeniably danceable, stripped bare yet brimming with funk, every sound on this meticulously crafted record hangs in its rightful place. An invigorating release - highly recommended.

Cat: LXMXK 03. Rel: 17 Nov 20
  1. Preach On Sunday (8:27)
  2. Can I Get Ahhm (7:15)
Review: Run by Swiss house maestro Alex Storrer, the Lexx Music imprint returns with Nikita Elmer aka Bocab: a trumpeter and producer whose previous work was more centered around hip-hop styles, but here moves into purist deep house in impressive fashion. The sombre yet soulful (and dusty!) Detroit vibe of 'Preach On Sunday' will no doubt bear comparisons to the Three Chairs sound, but it is still a compliment as far as we're concerned. On the flip, things take a more optimistic turn on the lo-slung, slo-mo, feel good emotions of "Can I Get Ahhm".

Review: Brother May and Micachu met in 2006 in an internet cafe and now, 14 years later, they are behind this exclusive record store day release. It's a long time since people used to upload songs to MySpace, but that's just what this pair did in their early days and they have continued to work together ever since. This album is a showcase of improvised freestyles and beat making from Brother May and Micachu, all of which was made on a DIY set up in kitchens and bedrooms. That homemade aesthetic characterises the album and make it a mini-modern day classic.

  2. Monsieur Mercredi - "Ego" (4:48)
  3. Quidam - "Double Trouble" (6:42)
  4. Quidam - "Lebsa" (5:52)
Review: More from the Paris-based Mercredi collective, whose distinctive take on electronic music - first showcased via a solo single from key member Quidam last year - draws on a wealth of disparate musical influences. For proof, check out the A-side, where Chahan's 'Jungle (Pile Ou Faune Mix)' - a quirky but rather good blend of deep house, 80s zouk beats and glassy-eyed synth-pop sounds - is followed by the soca-goes-street soul sweetness of Monsieur Mercredi's 'Ego'. Quidam takes over on the flip, first offering up the classic house flourishes, trance builds and bustling beats of the acid-splashed 'Double Trouble', before getting all exotic on the Mali-meets-early-Massive Attack headnodder 'Lebsa'.

Review: Second time around for 'Bloody Language', a 2014 single from Italian industrial scene veterans Control Unit. Appearing again on translucent green vinyl in an ultra-limited pressing of 100, the record offers a good introduction to the dystopian musical world of the outfit's principle players, guitarist/vocalist Ninni Morgia and synth player/vocalist Silvia Kastel. 'Bloody Language' is raw, fuzzy and intense, with squealing lead guitar solos and Kastel's angry, stylized vocals rising above Nine Inch Nails style riffs and punky drums. It comes accompanied by an even more punk-fuelled bonus cut, 'Alarm', and a freakish post-industrial number on the flip - the beat-free, end-of-days soundscape that is EP highlight 'Forbidden Thoughts'

Review: We're going to have to try really, really hard not to use cliches like 'oi oi' here - Desert Sound Colony adds to an oeuvre that has given us some of the finest dark garage of recent years with a rave bomb that's neither nostalgic nor chin strokey in all the right ways. A broken party gem that should work across anything below the 140s, providing you've got the ideas, it's enough to make you batter down the doors of the nearest club.

Not just one, two or even three delights, all four tracks on offer are excellent specimens; the hypnotic badman vibes of 'Pulled Through The Wormhole', appropriately titled chaotic acid workout 'The Gobbler', and the bone rattle percussion of 'Echo Shaper' collectively making this damn near essential.

Review: 1980s music really does keep giving providing you keep digging. Technology and access to that equipment had reached never before seen levels by this point in time, so suddenly the biggest obstacle was imagination itself - so much could be achieved, if you had the right ideas.

As a result those ten years were packed with a particularly bold kind of experimentalism, hence the incredible diversity in subcultures and subcanons, with Drance a case in point. Born out of the queer-industrial scene of Los Angeles in 1989, Latex Love is a great EP to introduce ears to their particularly strained take on electro. Huge waves of synth, growling low ends and instantly infectious hooks set to a lyrical style that sounds like synth pop meets dark fantasy. The original track is here with some excellent remixes by Chris Cruse and Kris Baha, for anyone who wants retro with a contemporary twist.

  1. Expand (12:30)
  2. Collapse (7:15)
Review: We're not sure Endless Melancholy is the most appropriate name for Oleksiy Sakevych, an electronic ambient artist based out of the sprawling and musically vibrant Ukrainian capital of Kiev. As this two-tracker goes to show, there's every chance you'll feel elated after pressing play on his studio work.

Following on from releases for labels like Thesis, Sound In Silence, and his own Hidden Vibes, we're given a pair of long form compositions that feel organic in nature, even if the production was synthesised. 'Collapse' seems to switch its mood like a living thing, evolving through crystalline chimes from reflective opening notes, as though starting to realise its own stunning power and majesty. "Expand' is more rooted in drone, albeit a particularly euphoric version - all long refrained bliss, the way things should be.

Make Love On The Wing (limited 7")
Cat: FLIES 4522. Rel: 26 Nov 20
  1. Make Love On The Wing (2:56)
  2. Sweet Disco Funky (3:34)
Review: Italian composer Nico Fidenco's soundtrack scores for the cult softcore series Black Emanuelle have long been held in high regard, in part because they're far more fun (and funky) than you'd perhaps expect. This limited-edition "45" features two of Fidenco's most sought-after compositions. On the A-side you'll find 'Make Love on the Wing' from 1977's Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals, and wonderfully over-the-top slab of soaring, string-drenched disco sleaziness with tons of sweeping orchestration and added spacey synthesizer sounds. Over on the flip there's a chance to savour the fittingly titled 'Sweet Disco Funky' from 1978's Emanuelle and the White Slave Trade. It too features some great cut-glass strings and breathy female backing vocals, alongside rousing horns and guitar licks reminiscent of many Blaxploitation movie soundtracks.

Review: A veteran of the Berlin electronic music scene, Sascha Funke is no stranger to local expatriates Multi Culti, debuting for them back in 2016 with the terrific In Relationen EP. For his latest outing, he paris up with multi-instrumentalist Niklas Wandt, one half of Gehoelzpflege, for some trippy and low slung sonic shenanigans on the Kreidekreis EP. From the slo-mo tribal trance of opening cut 'Kometenschweif' which will propel you into the cosmos in vertically locomotive fashion, followed by the funky sundown nu-disco of the title track which receives a wicked rework by Alexander Arpeggio up next - taking the track into psyched-out lounge territory. Also on the remix is Neapolitan Whodammanny, channelling '80s Neue Deutsche Welle sounds, German vocals to boot, on a rendition of 'Kometenschweif'.

  1. Never Gonna Leave New York City (5:23)
  2. Willie Mays, Boom For Real (5:58)
Review: New York art-house outfit Gray might not be the most famous to come from America's biggest, loudest and proudest city, but their oeuvre is definitely worth taking the time to discover. Fronted by the more recognisable name of Jean-Michel Basquait, as this two-tracker goes to show the outfit can teach us all a thing or two about how to encapsulate the life that exists on your doorstep.

Comprising previously unreleased and very rare work, the centre point is 'Never Gonna Leave New York City', which could almost be seen as a counterargument to LCD Soundsystem's 'New York, I Love You'. There we had James Murphy lamenting the loss of the old dirty side of the Big Apple, but here Basquait is celebrating that chaos and intensity as it still existed back in the 1980s. A vivid spoken word homage to scenes we all know from movies, if not reality.

  5. Sons Of Traders - "The Smile Of The Body" (6:01)
Review: The third instalment in the Allstars series from Frigio is another selection of murky sonics from a freaky underworld. The opener is a dark trip into intense and underlapping drum grooves and molten synths that crashes from one loop to the next. The rickety drums of 'Bruxism' come with a classic Moby sample that sets it on fire and Negocius Man take us into a world of surveillance and subversion with their tripped out designs and malfunctioning machine sounds. Sons Of Traders offer the most depraved of the lot with a track that is suitably terrifying as the haunting season approaches.

  1. Love

  3. Pain
  4. Envy
Review: Heads up, fans of dystopian futures and sexy cyborgs - while you can never be sure what a band, artist or producer was thinking when they started putting pen to paper on new material, the safe money here would be on some all-seeing siren commanding submissive minions to do her bidding in an industry-scarred megatropolis.

Then again, maybe that's just our imagination. Either way, the four tracks here are futuristic slow motion electro breaks with more than a few proggy nuances. It's dark, slightly sinister dance music that's hypnotic and more than a little cinematic. Yet human emotion is at the core, at least thematically. 'Love' asks us if the feeling even exists, as though voiceover belongs to a machine trying to understand another species. 'Lust' oozes suggestion, that whistle hook creating a real rough and ready rave vibe, with closers 'Pain' and 'Envy' packing poised knife edge energy.

Review: Burnski's Instinct project continues to gather steam with the release of a second album following last year's Still Life, which established the Leeds tech house veteran as a serious player in the new wave of UK garage. The ideas come thick and fast on Point Of View, flowing from the aqueous 2-step funk of 'Pistolwhip' to the 4x4 uplift of 'Sunstream', but the strongest moments come when the sound design collides with formidable bassweight on the likes of 'Select'. This is primarily a collection of club tackle, but it's packed with enough shade and depth to reach beyond the dance for all those other moments when you need a little shuffle in your life.

  1. Possibilites (4:05)
  2. Shazzy (4:12)
Review: Since debuting in 2007, the sound of Scandinavian twosome Jesse has evolved considerably, moving from electro and skewed synth-pop to dusty Balearic beats, spaced-out deep dub disco, techno and, more recently, new age ambient. This seven-inch single, which marks their return to wax after two long years, sees them take further steps away from their roots. A-side 'Possibilities' is drowsy, atmospheric and effects-laden, with the pair layering sustained minor-key chords and bubbly, marimba style melodies over slipped, loose-limbed machine drums and intergalactic electronic noises. It's rather good all told, as is more experimental and unusual flipside 'Shazzy', which brilliantly joins the dots between icy IDM, trippy ambient and Radiophonic Workshop style modular experimentation.
