Review: For the uninitiated, 2Xirtam is a collaboration between two artists who can trace their roots back to the IDM and ambient techno days of the late 1990s, Lee Norris (AKA Metamatics, Norken) and Frank Rumpelt (Nyquist, Silver Planet). "Quantum Worlds", their second album, draws on these roots for inspiration, offering up a set of impressively psychedelic, otherworldly tracks bristling with bubbly acid lines, deep basslines, intergalactic-sounding ambient chords, sci-fi melodies and beats that are variously skittish, angular, sludgy and hypnotic. It genuinely sounds like a long-lost classic from 1994, and a fresh, far-sighted and fantastical one at that.

Review: For a long time, Nicolas Jaar kept quiet about the Against All Logic project, using it as a hype-free alias in which he could express the more forthright and fuzzy side of his artistic personality, free of the musical preconceptions that now come with his given name. The cat's out of the bag now though, and there will no doubt be additional interest in this sophomore set from the project. As the title suggests, it features material recorded between 2017 and 2019, delivering a thrilling blend of mutant, distorted future R&B, over-saturated leftfield house, skittish digi-dancehall drum jams, concrete-clad industrial beat-scapes, and the kind of inspired-but-wonky dancefloor workouts that are next to impossible to accurately describe.

  1. Illusions Of Shameless Abundance (feat Lydia Lunch) (5:55)
  2. Alucinao (feat Estado Unido & FKA Twigs) (9:09)
Review: Hot on the heels of "2017-2019", his second album of angular, off-kilter electronics and mechanical rhythms work under the Against All Logic alias, Nicolas Jaar offers up a 12" containing two eyebrow-raising collaborative cuts. Legendary alternative artist Lydia Lunch, who also features on the album, pops up on A-side "Illusions of Shameless Abundance", adding a out there spoken word vocal - much of which is presented as a series of overlapping loops - to Jaar's skewed modular electronics and trippy, out-of-this-world sounds. Estado Unido and FKA Twigs lend a hand on flipside "Alucinao", providing gently soulful lyrical flavour to a distorted, thrillingly aggressive South American electro rhythm, sweaty pots-and-pans percussion and metallic melodic elements.

Review: On her 2019 debut album "Vegetal Negatives", sound recordist, sound designer and experimental electronic composer Marja Ahti offered up a striking blend of processed field recordings, unearthly ambient tones and hissing tape loops. She continues on a similar theme on this equally impressive sequel, the centrepiece of which is a 20-minute long commissioned piece, "The Altitudes", in which creepy electronic tones, deathly bells and spooky ambient chords flit in and out of an atmospheric collage of crackling radio static, distant field recordings and otherworldly noises. The four shorter pieces on side two explore similar aural themes, with the ebb of flow of Ahti's minimalist musical missives slipping in and out of ghostly, music concrete style soundscapes.

Review: For his latest album as Atomine Elektrine - his first for esteemed Dutch imprint Winter Light - Peter Andersson has drawn inspiration from the Antikythera Mechanism, a real-life ancient Greek device that is widely thought to have been the world's first "analogical computer". The album's six tracks are as magical and mythical as the discovered device that inspired them, with Andersson cannily fusing layered field recordings and strange, spaced-out noises with swelling ambient chords, slowly unfurling melodies and spacey sampled noises to create audio collages that defy lazy categorization. It reminded us a little of some of the darker and weirder outings of the KLF during their brief ambient period (think the lesser known "Rites of Mu" and "Waiting" soundtracks), albeit with more intergalactic ethos.

While this means you'll have to be fast to secure a copy, we'd recommend making the investment. The Chicago-based producer's work is fluid, warm, dreamy and drifting, with his extensive use of glistening, reverb-laden electric guitar solos, opaque chords and other 'traditional' acoustic instruments - there's occasional and well-placed piano, cello, viola and violin - recalling the work of Jonny Nash and the superb Music From Memory label. While London's work has its own distinct flavour, it paddles in similarly sunset-ready waters - and is every bit as alluring.

  3. Living On The Ceiling (4:11)
  4. Living On The Ceiling (extended version) (5:32)
Review: First released way back in 1982, Blancmange's "Living On The Ceiling" remains one of the most alluring and eccentric of all new wave-era synth-pop cuts, in part because the unusual inclusion of tabla and sitar parts gives it an unusually exotic, mind-altering flavour. This timely reissue includes the original album mix (B1) and '82 12" version (B2), as well as two brand new reworks from the mighty Roman Flugel. The veteran German producer has delivered the goods, first via a deliciously wonky, otherworldly and analogue-rich revision that brilliantly fuses elements of trippy Teutonic techno and raw, turn-of-the-80s New Wave. As you'd expect, his accompanying dub takes the track further in this direction, delivering a deliciously skewed trip into sparse, heavy, early morning territory.

  4. Ron Boots - "Far Boundaries" (9:22)
Review: Stroom's latest must-check release is a mini-compilation featuring suitably obscure electronic tracks originally released between 1993 and '96. Check first Ron Boots' picturesque "Lachrymation", where chiming melodies, lilting lead lines and spacey chords rise above similarly spaced-out beats, before turning your attention to the meditative, early morning swell of Jo Bogaert's immersive - and aptly titled - "Ambient Kinsky". Turn to the flip for the hazy, tabla-driven dreaminess of Morten Sondergaard's bleeping "Sahara I Mine Maender", as well as Ron Boots epic "Far Boundaries". The latter is an incredible slice of slow-burn ambient bliss that sounds like it was recorded in one of Europe's grandest old cathedrals.

Review: Electronic music composer Ben Lukas Boysen returns to the release schedule with 'Mirage', six tracks that showcase the producer and multi-instrumentalist at his very best, packed with contemporary classical overtures, jazz interludes, experimental electronics and more. As ever, this is all presented in a grand but precise vision, making for a real sonic adventure. Take 'Mendela', for example. Its reverberating low ends and combination of shrill and sedate refrains makes for a perplexing track. 'Venia' could soundtrack the world's finest symphony halls. 'Kenotaph' brings elements of progressive rock into the equation. Closer 'Love' is a huge, cinematic work of wonder that sounds as though it was made in another reality is meditative, lush, huge but personal in its impact. A welcome addition to an already impressive oeuvre, it's Boysen at his emotive best.

Review: Given that they named themselves after Norfolk's famous waterways, it's perhaps unsurprising that Norwich duo Broads have released rather a lot of music inspired by the county's numerous sleepy towns and villages. They're at it again on "Ollust", a fine album of atmospheric music made in cahoots with friend and fellow Norwich resident Milly Hirst. Her beautiful piano playing and layered choral vocals feature prominently throughout, combining with Broads hazy electronic textures, slowly shifting drones, fractured post-rock guitar notes and enveloping production to create a series of stunning pastoral soundscapes. The most arresting examples of this are jaw-dropping opener "Happisburgh" (named after a coastal village that's slowly falling into the sea), the short-but-inspired "Oulton" and the epic "Strangers", where intensely dark, creeping motifs slowly engulf Hirst's piano.

Review: Sound scientist Brock Van Wey decided to mix things up during the making of his latest album, the decidedly bittersweet and weary "Ten Times The World Lied". To begin with, he decided to deliver an album without vocals - the first time he's ever done that - before opting to record a track a month, on the tenth day of each, for ten months. Furthermore, each densely layered track was recorded and mixed live. The results are impressive, with Van Wey offering mostly melancholic - but intensely beautiful - collages of layered ambient chords, effects-laden melodic movements and extreme aural textures that fill every invisible nook and cranny of the sound space.

Review: Catching Flies' debut album "Silver Linings" was a gently eclectic and hard-to-pigeonhole affair - think soulful fusions of hip-hop, house, jazz and electronica - so it makes perfect sonic sense that this remixed version should include revisions by an impressively diverse array of artists. There are naturally a clutch of more dancefloor-centric reworks - see Andhim's hypnotic, tech-tinged deep house take on "Opals", Ron Basejam's deep jazz-house version of "New Gods", a bustling breakbeat pass of "Satisfied" by Soundbwoy Killah and DJ Seinfeld's deliciously saucer-eyed, rave-friendly re-imagining of "Silver Linings" - as well as a clutch of more downtempo-minded tweaks. Highlights in the latter category include a bluesy "Ambient Reprise" of "Satisfied" and Freddie Joachim's delightfully dusty, slow-motion version of "Kite Hill Theme".

Review: As you might expect, there are a number of thoughtful themes explored on French composer Sylvain Chauveau's latest album, "Life Without Machines". Chauveau has framed it as a meditation on humanity's reliance on machinery and whether that's sustainable - a potent point in the era of COVID-19 - though the accompanying press release also states that each of the album's short compositions used "Barnett Newman's 'The Stations of The Cross' series of abstract paintings as a visual score". Regardless, what's offered up is haunting, sparse and profoundly moving: a succession of solo piano pieces performed by French pianist Melaine Dalibert that are variously haunting, bittersweet, beautiful and surprisingly sorrowful.

Review: There's something particularly arresting about the poignant and sometimes sorrowful sound world of Cremation Lily, AKA experimental electronica artist Zen Zsigo. Since 2014 he's been offering up albums inspired by his experience of living in British coastal towns, which these days are often far more bleak than beautiful. 2017's "The Processes & Instruments Of Normal People", which here gets a much deserved vinyl release, is arguably his strongest meditation on coastal life to date. It was created using a stripped-back list of equipment - drum machine, guitar, effects unit, a couple of synths and two cassette players loaded with his own field recordings - with the resultant music offering a bittersweet, poignant blend of atmospheric ambient soundscapes, haunting piano meditations and swelling lo-fi ambient techno shufflers.

Review: On this ear-catching album, Danish label Posh Isolation has brought together the two collaborative releases (to date) from Croatian Amor and Varg2TM. First up on side A is 2018's "Body Of Water", a wonderfully positive paddle in aquatic ambient waters in which the two producers combine lilting electronic melodies, sun-bright synthesizer motifs and opaque, watery chords in a number of tuneful, life-affirming ways. Turn to the flip for last year's follow-up, "Body Of Carbon", an altogether bolder affair that flits between gritty, beat-driven electronica (the fuzzy techno pulse of "Tell Your Tale To The River" and the doom-laden fizz of "God's Face In The Fire") and blissful ambient soundscapes ("God's Face In The Water").

Review: On her last album, 2019's "Zoom", Maria Rossi AKA Cucina Povera abandoned the comforts of her home studio in favour of "in-situ" recordings with a stripped-back selection of equipment. For this follow-up, she's returned to the studio and delivered what Night School describes as, "a slowly unfurling meditation on the clash between nature and mechanical living". Musically, that means an ear-catching, often ethereal blend of foreboding, angular electronics, sampled digital interference, occasional off-kilter beats, atmospheric ambient chords and her own layered, improvised vocals - plus occasional processed field recordings and flashes of acoustic instrumentation. It's a brilliant blend and one that helps make "Tyyni" one of the most intoxicating and otherworldly albums we've heard for some time.

Review: There's plenty to get the synapses firing on the sixth volume in BAKK's ongoing "Plafond" series of EPs, which explore music that sits "somewhere between the dancefloor and the living room". The real gem here is Cucina Povera and Haron's epic A-side "Riffittelya", a 21-minute journey full of ghostly vocalisations, chiming bells, slowly shifting chords, atmospheric field recordings and fleeting snapshots of neo-classical instrumentation. Both artists go solo on the flip, where the becalmed ambient warmth of Haron's swelling "Maandag, Spiegeldag" is followed by the layered acapella vocals and hushed chords of Cucina Povera's inspired "Ajatus".
