Falling Down EP
Falling Down EP (12" + MP3 download code)
Cat: WGVINYL 99. Rel: 12 Feb 24
8Kays & Glowal - "Matematica" (feat Abrao) (6:21)
8Kays & Juan Hansen - "Falling Down" (6:52)
8Kays & Juan Hansen - "Falling Down" (Colyn & Beswerda remix) (6:04)
8Kays & Juan Hansen - "Falling Down" (Chris Avantgarde remix) (6:52)
8Kays - "Lyra" (5:23)
Review: Watergate, the cult Berlin club known for its riverside location and legendary LED ceiling above the dancefloor, is also a reputable tech house label that deals in fresh names only. Here it is 8Kays that makes a debut with Falling Down, a selection of superb collaborations including 'Matematica' with Glowal which is tense and electric tech with indie vocals and with Juan Hansen he cooks up the medically hopeful 'Falling Down' which then gets two remixes. Colyn & Beswerda make it into a moody and deep groove, Chris Avantgarde brings some peak time prog energy and solo cut 'Lyra' has a warm, paddy broken beat to cruise on through the stars.

Cat: PF 005. Rel: 23 Nov 23
Aline Umber - "Hypnotized" (feat Poggio) (5:09)
Juaan - "Talt" (5:51)
Ramez - "Devil Selectro" (5:39)
Plazeg - "German Physicist" (6:03)
Review: Poggio and Gabriel Belabbas' cheeky Positive Future label is back once again to bring some playful mischief to the contemporary electro-techno scene. This split release showcases some of the artists orbiting the label, kicking off in spooky style with Aline Umber's 'Hypnotized', which features a pitched down vocal from Poggio no less. Juaan's 'Talt' is equally steeped in B-movie freakery and tongue-in-cheek samples, while Ramez takes things deeper on bass-toting dirtbag joint 'Devil Selectro'. Plazeg finishes the record off with the scattershot bleep feast 'German Physicist', which has a whale of a time plying its own line in gleefully macabre club music.

Mirage (8:07)
Virtual (5:20)
Haunted (5:19)
Solano (7:36)
Review: MCMLXV welcomes back Analog~1 for a third outing here. It is an alias of JS Zeiter and one that is reserved more for esoteric and electronica tracks following notable outings on labels such as Furthur Electronix, Meandyou and We're Going Deep. 'Mirage' kicks off with melancholic pads and dubby chords over crisp minimal drums that sink you into a reverie. That vibe continues through 'Virtual' and 'Haunted' which care both sophisticated atmospheres with subtle electro-tinged rhythms and quietly emotive pads. 'Solano' closes down with another icy and cavernous space that is filled with meaningful synth craft to make for another classy EP.

Take A Trip 002
Cat: TAT 002. Rel: 23 Oct 23
LAQ WEEDO - "J" (4:29)
Burbashi - "Moonz" (7:46)
Jerome C - "Several Times" (7:32)
MoMa - "Morning At The River" (7:44)
Review: Take A Trip focuses on every intersection of dance music from electro to breaks, but in all things, their mudra is to keep it minimal. Their second V/A here flaunts four new ones sourced from their roster; whether that be Burbashi's knocky, sloshy and understated electro bit 'Moonz', or Jerome C's texturally dense, rhythm-guitar-looped minimalia.

Kulture Galerie Volume Two
Cat: KGV 002. Rel: 21 Dec 23
Bohm - "Tactical Options!" (5:31)
Metropolitan Soul Museum - "Negative Mouth" (6:13)
John Beltran - "Canarias" (6:57)
Nathan Kofi & RDS - "Bankastraat" (3:22)
Tramic - "Lanterns" (4:14)
Review: Kulture Galerie has got off to a superb start with a release that got the attention of big names such as Laurent Garnier, Midland and Vladimir Ivkovic. The pressure is on, in that case, to follow that up with a second release that makes just as much impact and the label passes the test with flying colours with a various artists' collection featuring some big names. Chief amongst them are Detroit don John Beltran with his scintillating hi-tek soul workout 'Canarias', and Bohm with the densely woven synth layers and dusty drum programming over the gorgeous 'Tactical Options!' Add in the more hard edge drums of 'Metropolitan Soul Museum's 'Negative Mouth', the melodic elegance of 'Bankastraat' and the acid madness of Tramic's 'Lanterns' and you have a vital 12".

Best Of Native Soul Recordings Volume One (feat Asad Rizvi mix)
The Candy Dealers - "Train Of Thoughts" (6:13)
Harold Heath - "Slipstream" (6:59)
Jevne - "Moderize" (Asad Rizvi remix) (7:15)
Review: Native Soul Recordings has been around a long old time in dance music terms and now it looks back over some of its finest works with this first in a new series of Best Of comps. Music writer Harold Heath is first up with 'Slipstream,' an effortless smooth late-night house cut with introspective chords and silky pads bringing real depth. The Candy Dealers get more lithe and elastic with the spraying bass and jumbled percussive house of 'Train Of Thought' and last of all, Asad Rizvi remixes Jevne's 'Moderize' with a funky little bassline and chord vamps that keep you on edge. A tasteful package of timeless house grooves.

CLJL - "Non Terrestrial" (Spaced mix) (5:46)
CLJL - "Shadow Speak" (6:02)
Jamie Leather - "Thats Enough Now" (6:07)
Jamie Leather - "Like This, Like That" (6:41)
Review: This tasteful label gets 2024 underway in brilliant fashion with a split EP that opens with a fine brace from CLJL. 'Non Terrestrial' (Spaced Mix) is the sort of heady tech house cut that harks back to the prog-techno sounds of the 90s. 'Shadows Speak' is another bumper with rickety percussive loops and thudding kicks to power you along and then Jamie Leather steps up on the flip. 'That's Enough Now' has a mysterious feel - a cautionary exploration of deep space with nice percolating tech funk, and 'Like This, Like That' rounds out with feel-good chords draped over surging cosmic house. Super.

King David (6:34)
Mango Strut (6:04)
June Buggy (5:42)
Callin' Dybbs (6:08)
Review: Akka & BeepBeep is a new label from the US that is dropping its first two EPs simultaneously on Valentine's Day. Joradesilver is behind one, and also feature sin collaborative mode on this other 12". It opens with 'King David', a hi-tek house sound with soul drenched pads and tightly programmed drums and bass. 'Mango Strut' slows right down to dubbed out house with clattering percussion and the sound of spacecraft, then 'June Buggy' gets funky with more twitchy cosmic synths and a nice organic house groove. 'Callin' Dybbs' is a deep and smoky closer for the backroom with a sublime sax line drifting throughout.

The Come Down (8:44)
The Come Down (Halo Varga remix) (7:49)
Be Who You Want (8:12)
Be Who You Want (Ion Ludwig Think You're Free remix) (7:56)
Review: Roger Gerressen is one of those artists, along with the likes of Plastikman and Maurizo, say, who can craft a loop so perfect that it's almost enough to just let it play for days. Here he works with Jonah on a new one for Muted Noise that finds him layer up more fulsome arrangements, at least to start with on the pained 'The Come Down' with its nagging vocal coos and melancholic chords. A Halo Varga remix is more driving and club ready tech, then 'Be Who You Want' is a delightfully deep, delicate and dubbed-out house cut with silky vocals and pillowy chords. Ion Ludwig Think You're Free remix again ups the pace and makes the original a more deriving tech cut.

Huerta - "DAYL" (5:08)
Jacksonville - "Data Log" (7:03)
Nlxlb - "Gravitate" (6:35)
100Hz - "Ggg" (6:52)
Review: Hizou Deep Rooted Music is one of those quality-assured imprints that is always well worth checking in with. This latest platter is another on that truly matters with Huerta opening up with 'DAYL' which showcases his distinctive blend of spaced-out breaks and silky tech house. Jacksonville's 'Data Log' is ahems down and deep late-night cosmic excursion and Nlxlb's 'Gravitate' keeps you afloat on mellifluous astral lines and twinkling melodic stars. 100Hz shuts down with 'Ggg', a unique mix of floating pads and barely-there rhythm that grow in stature as your journey to the certain edges of the galaxy unfolds.

Cabanelas - "Salvador" (7:44)
Cabanelas - "Vuelta" (8:39)
Review: Zonate is a new label exploring the crossover between electro and techno with some classy branding based around all your favourite foliage. The Monstera E.P. welcomes Samuel Jabba onto the A side following his previous stints on From The Void Above and Genie In A Bottle. The vibe is seductive darkness for red-lit dancefloors, with a little sprinkling of trance-house mysticism to keep heads firmly tripping. On the flip Cabanelas makes good on the promise of past releases on Montevideo Electric and Partisan by dropping some growling, prowling workouts for those who like tech house functionality powering analogue sound palettes.

Swervin’ It (6:36)
Shifty Manoeuvres (5:55)
Swamp Runner (5:47)
Bongo Function (5:42)
Review: Portugal's Magic Carpet label has been one of the most attractive homes for discovering breaks and house since its inception and for their 13th release, they call upon the services of veteran Jack D. The 'Bongo Royale' EP excels in offering up a lot for everyone in a little four track EP. 'Swervin' It' is entertaining and infectious. injecting some fun into house music while 'Shifty Maneuvers' gets a bit more groovin'. On the B-side, 'Swamp Runner' combines a bit of a tribal groover with a slight bit of progressive house reminding us of some memorable 2000-esque club sounds and 'Bongo Function' closes out things on a high note.

Waverider (6:37)
Innervision (6:09)
Blunderbuss (6:16)
Under The Influence (6:01)
Review: Man of many aliases Ron Wells is undoubtedly an under-appreciated British dance music hero - a producer who delivered a string of innovative jungle-techno releases in the early 90s and has been serving up killer cuts in a variety of styles ever since. Here he dons the Jack Smooth alias (a moniker he debuted way back in 1991) for a collaborative four-tracker alongside fellow storied veteran Anthony Wilson AKA Chicago Loop. They begin in sensational fashion via the bleep-sporting analogue acid house of 'Waverider', before opting for warehouse-ready early UK techno sounds on the gnarled and nasty 'Innervision'. 'Blunderbuss' adds warped hardcore rave sounds to a sweat-soaked jackin' house beat, while 'Under The Influence' sounds like a long lost, loved-up tech-house blueprint from 1994. Stellar stuff all told.

Review: Everyone's favourite cult record label - and some might say UFO religion - Multi Culti are back with a fresh homing-in on the artist Thomass Jackson, who delivers a sprawling array of squelchy, lo-fi acid jams on the EP 'UFO House Vol. 1'. Scouring endless extraterrestrial untrodden voids of sound, we begin with the mouth-filtered 'Belgian UFO Wave' before seguing into the likes of the sizzlingly weird 'Aphex Twinkie', before concluding on the uncanny, janky popper 'Back In Guadalajara'.

Comex (7:15)
Yaw (7:50)
Review: The small but already well-formed Flo label out of France welcomes two homebodies in Janet and Miroloja to come together on this sublime two tracker. It is a heady mix of techno styles starting with the adventure that is 'Comex'. This one rides on snappy drums and snare petters, with acid lines gurgling away up top next to twitchy stabs that keep the vibes alive. 'Yaw' takes a different approach - it's a more fair-sighted and introspective affair with balmy pads circling around the smooth grooves. Two timeless grooves for different moments in the night.

Workhorse (7:22)
Still A Raver (8:21)
Review: We're big fans of Canadian artist Jay Tripwire's leftfield take on tech and here he is back with more of it on Jamie Clarke's Either imprint. Tripwire brings his murky atmospheric style to the forefront on the title track which soon locks you in, then 'Workhorse' delves into haunting minimal realms with lush synth textures and glitchy bass, while 'Still A Raver' ups the energy with bigger synths and more driving drums. It's a track with killer subs and an ever-evolving sense of fluid rhythm that will have you shaking every limb in your body.

The Real Life Of John Merrick (12:46)
Pleiadian Wavelength (7:54)
The Real Life Of John Merrick (Herck remix) (8:16)
Review: Minimal stalwart Jay Tripwire has been as prolific as ever this year, serving up the Narcotic Oscillator EP for The Other Side and collaborating with Cristi Cons on Witching Hour. Now it's time for the Canadian veteran to serve up some boss level beats to emergent label VRNT, holding true to the rhythmic demands of the stripped-down tech house scene while finding plenty of space for expression and innovation in the sound design. 'The Real Life Of John Merrick' is a masterfully sculpted workout, while 'Pleiadian Wavelength' unfurls exquisite melodic and textural synth forms around an understated groove. Herck completes the package with a crunchy, bugged-out version of the lead track which harks back to the crooked computer funk synonymous with Canadian minimal in the mid 00s.

Review: Owen Jay and Melchior Sultana have been working together for what seems like ever, and each time they step out they manage to mine new deep house depths. This new one on We're Going Deep - which has a label sticker that reminds us of Chicago house classic 'Real For Love' - opens with the dubby house drive of 'Going Deep' before sinking into a more warm, humid and cavernous dub house groove on 'Dub Setting'. 'Chi-Town Love' has more upright drums and synths full of dusty soul and 'The Beginning' closes with booming kick drums and plenty of sunset chord warmth.

Hatchet's Cave (Anunaku remix) (5:48)
Review: Jeigo dropped a thrilling debut album Cerulean back at the end of 2022, worked in a tune with Elkka for her DJ-Kicks mix and also dropped a mix for Bicep not long ago. Now he follows all that up with a firing four-track EP on Tread Records that again collides different club sounds, great samples and hooky melodies. 'Hatchet's Cave' is hands-in-the-air house euphoria with blistering drums and warped pads, then 'Move X' is a gritty tech bouncer and 'Compulsions' is a bubbly one with crisp hits. Nervous Horizons label boss Anunaku remixes the title track into a bass-heavy banger too.

Review: Jive Talk did some fine work with their recent outing on the Ghost Rec label and now follow it up with another fresh 12" on the Dutch label Classique Records. The sound designs here are full of character as always with this outfit and on opener 'Still Guv'nin' its the squelchy and warped bassline and the precision of the hi-hats that really stand out. Voigtmann adds his own more pulsating and direct remix before the flip side has 'Shadow Caster', a deep and retro-tinged mid tempo groover. This one gets remixed by Thomas Bulwer who flips it into a wonky tech house number with trippy melodies and raw drums.

Exemplary 2-step, speed garage and bass compiled into a single EP for the modern zeitgeist, and packaged under the visage of a stoned, grilled bucket-hatter, the likes of 'Crackz' and 'Meet With The Devil' stick out like throbbing sub-bled ears, hardcore-continual conches for a next gen eager to prove their mettle.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

Hot Creations boss Jamie Jones manages to find time for another release, in between his Ibiza residency and travelling the globe as one of modern house music's most popular DJs. His latest offering brings everything you'd expect from the Welshman and nothing less. These four Summery and pop-inflected tech house cuts are hot material on their own and make a cohesive EP. Starting off with the anthemic "Sound Of Music" covering jungle legend Nookie's track of the same name and with pop sensation Katy B on vocals. The rolling peak time groove "Kooky Chords" is absolutely the sound of not only 'The Island' but Jones' label and will bang the party just as much as recent offerings by wAFF or Phil Kieran. On the flip, there's a bouncy and sleazy early evening jam in the form of "Positive Pressure" featuring American Kevin Knapp and the druggy/minimal afterhours DJ tool "Parallel Universe".

Review: The all-new Akka & BeepBeep label from the US has dropped its two first EPs simultaneously and Joradesilver features on both. The other is a collaboration with Eddie Logix and this is a solo outing, Social Moment. It is a four-track electro exploration that kicks off with 'Who Want Me', a spacious funk workout with smeared synths and driving bass. The title track brings hints of Detroit to the arrangement and 'Mad Dog Mood' brings lashings of acid and techno to a pulsating low end while closer 'Find Another' rocks back and forth on feathery drums with fizzing melodica leads.

Why So Serious (6:49)
Sunny Side Up (5:59)
Undercurrent (5:48)
Review: Since moving from Europe to Canada last year, Jordan Czamanski AKA Jordan GCZ has been relatively quiet, release wise, with just one solo EP and a collaborative album (Recreational Kraut, with long-time friend and studio buddy David Moufang) appearing. This return to Rawax, then, is a welcome development. Title track 'Polyphonic Glide's is particularly potent, with Czamanski combing tight, impactful drums with deeply spacey pads and chords, jazzy bass and his usual stoned, mind-mangling sound design. Elsewhere, 'Why So Serious' is a bouncy, hypnotic, acid-flecked box jam smothered in ghostly pads and echoing synth solos; 'Sunny Side Up' is snappy, out-there and intergalactic in equal measure; and 'Undercurrent' sits somewhere between Detroit tech-jazz, Reagenz style ambient techno and dubby deep house.

Review: Jordan GCZ is back on Rawax in quick fashion after the Dizzy Dizzy Dizzy release from earlier in 2023. The machine-jamming maestro is at his best dealing in cosmically-charged techno, and that's exactly what he delivers on this latest record. 'Polyphonic Glide' is swathed in mysterious pads and soulful leads which offset the steady-trucking drive of the drums beautifully. 'Why So Serious' is a subtly bumping cut with a hazy, after hours atmosphere, while 'Sunny Side Up' deals in squashed funk and sparkling arps before 'Undercurrent' takes us home on a bed of celestial synth tones and submerged rhythms. The consistent feel of the record makes it a true delight to melt into - a techno record for sure dreamers.

This is our first brush with this artist but a fine one it is too with classic techno melded with new school ideas to great effect. 'Quantum Infiltration' opens up with thumping kicks and busy synth lines burrowing deep into your brain then 'Ultra Rogue Mission' has a darker and harder vibe with moody pads and ice col hi-hats. There is a sublime deepness to the dubby 'Millenniaapi' and '2099' is like the soundtrack to a post-apocalyptic disaster movie. 'Me Liga' is a mutant techno percolator for the heads.

Review: Argentina producer Juaan (Juan Fernandez) has gotten a lot of hype recently for his first handful of first releases. And from the sounds of his latest, he is living up to the hype and then some! The Placer EP is the first EP for the American Sarah Tonin records. Juaan's ability to create some killer electro, breaks and techno is evident right from the first sample of title track. His ability to take the recipe for early 90s and spin them into something futuristic again, is his calling card. It's really hard to tell what period these tracks are from. And to those in techno that means they have that staying timeless power that they look for in picking music. The energy in all these tracks is great for the dancefloor as well. Definitely music to make you dance. Hats off to Juann for being some unique and creating music that pushes the boundaries.

Review: Montreal's Jump Source have been on a roll since they kicked off their self-titled label in 2019, allowing them to stretch their sound out across techno, house, trance and some fruitful liminal zones in between. Just listen to 'Convenient Fetish' on their third instalment of this intermittent series, as sweet natured leads with an Ibizan melancholy meet with fizzing electro leads on top of a sleek but steady-trucking rhythm section. It's the kind of track which would happily transcend scenes while luring in a wide audience. The keen sense of melody binds the record together, not least on deeper highlight 'Kind Or Low', which leaves plenty of space for ambient reflection between the beats.

It Is To Be (5:57)
Review: Montreal-based label and production outfit Jump Source keep up the busy work rate hot on the heels of their recent five-track with a new drop. The three tracks here are all very much from the future - opener 'Scrap' is a fizzing, electric, static-laced minimal and tech groove with deft drums and plenty of wonky lines. 'Dry Mouth' gets a little more loose and more fluid but is still built from abstract sound designs and malfunctioning AI takes on techno. Last but not least, 'It Is To Be' brings a little late-night dub warmth to the table.

Review: Cultured minimalist Junes is back with more future takes on tech, acid, house and breaks. This time once again it is the artist's own Dote label that serves up these four cuts - only the label's 5th EP in some four years. 'Sapphire Tomb' pulls off that fine Junes trick of being both dreamy and deep yet dynamic. It's got smooth chords and tight drum programming that takes you to the stars where you then get worked over by the acid undulations and glistening tech of 'Head-Free Dose'. 'Heritage AD' veers towards supple, mind-melting Jeff Mills-style deep techno and 'Rounded' then ends on a prickly acid jacker. Versatile and vital.

Greatest Thing Alive (6:08)
Lady (Hear Me Tonight) (6:29)
Review: Toolroom head honcho Mark Knight has pulled out all the stops here and joined forces with some of house music's biggest names. His ow-slung new tune 'The Greatest Thing Alive' is a collab with the one and only Chicago don Green velvet plus James Hurr and it has already made an impact on global dancefloors since its digital release in October last year. Between these talents they all dig deep and cook up something perfectly chunky and detailed with fresh percussion. It's the sort of tune that will blow up in Miami and has the addition of Green Velvet's take on the classic 'Mannish Boy' from Muddy Waters.

Cut003 (7:36)
Review: A genuine meeting of minds here, as rising star (and Real Gang Records founder) Danny Miller joins forces with long-serving deep, dubby and techy house maestro Jay Tripwire. What's on offer is undeniably alluring: a three-track salvo built around deep, hypnotic, sub-heavy grooves and wonderfully wayward and wonky electronics. The trippy and mind-altering nature of the duo's combined sound is best exemplified by A-side 'Cut001', where lo-fi bleeps, echoing analogue electronics and ghostly chords wrap around crunchy machine drums and deep sub-bass. They opt for an even more sparse, druggy and dubbed-out tech-house sound on 'Cut002', before joining the dots between bleep, Paul Woolford's 'Erotic Discourse' and Tripwire's dub-fired house sounds on 'Cut003'.

JNJS - "X - Money" (5:07)
Eren Arif - "High Volume" (4:50)
Review: Deep In Dis make a defiant comeback with their latest V/A, across which five new jaunty minimal house cuts are heard. Beginning with an expositional slow-burn - Pily's 'Bailo En Circuito', which samples Alma Matris' vocals - we then move into the juddering trance of 'Buahh Trance' by Marcos Coya and then the first mix of 'Badalona's House' by Prince De Takicardie, the latter of which is far rougher and classic in sound. Jnjs' 'X Money' brings up the B with a UK garage turn, a mood which continues with Eren Arif's 'High Volume'.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

Oliver Schories has been steadily building up an impressive catalogue of cinematic, brooding tech house geared towards big rooms via the Pracht label, and after a couple of years of digital releases he delivered the triple LP Paradigm album last year. Now he builds on that progress with a new remix single which sends the track 'Packard' in four different directions, leading in with his own partnership with Jan Blomqvist for the bombastic 'Sunrise Mix'. Monkey Safari, Gorge and Giorgia Angiuli all lend similarly swooning, sentimental strains of club music for those who want to be bowled over with all of the feels when they go out dancing.
