Review: The pursuit of the perfect fusion of minimal and tech house is an endless one that gives rise to fascinating new music each and every day of the week here at Juno HQ. No Tech Just Wax is a fledgling label who recently threw their own metaphorical hat into the market and this fourth Various Artist EP is another strong one. It brings a certain hardcore edge and punk spirit to stripped back club grooves with the opener from FRNK being a case in point. Elsewhere there is alien-infected sound from DJ WEB, rugged electro and head-wrecking acid. This EP's strengths is in its fantastic variation.

No Market For Emotion EP
  1. Naked Dub (6:00)
  2. Cash Dub (7:18)
  3. Pyramid (Omar 1:00 am live jam) (6:32)
  4. Too Late For Nonesense (Omar live Out Of Box tool) (6:25)
Review: Indigenous Electronic's second release the "No Market for Emotion" EP pushes further into organic territory with a hardware driven release. The A side sees two tracks on the dubbier end of the spectrum recorded by Iranian producer Ramtin Niazi, a musician with a background in instrumental music, now with a greater focus on machine orientated electronic music. Niazi's contribution sees him delivering two low slung tracks: "Naked Dub" progressing with Lush emotional pads and "Cash Dub" a moodier counterpart. The B side sees the label's head Omar Jayyusi's debut release, with two entirely out the box jams recorded straight to two track. "Pyramid" has a deep and solid rumbling low end, acid basslines and percussive drums. "Too Late for nonsense", is a sub-bass focused micro house dj tool, punchy and reaching the lower end of the dynamic range.

Limited release of x 200 vinyl only without repress.

Three Trax (reissue)
Cat: RSO 01. Rel: 26 Nov 20
  1. Off Message (8:38)
  2. Night Nurse (7:20)
  3. Porcupine Groove (7:27)
Review: Throughout his lengthy career, Steve O'Sullivan has proved adept at delivering "proper techno" tracks that are a cut above those of his contemporaries. This re-issued three-tracker for Rawax shows him doing just. A-side 'Off Message' sets the tone, with O'Sullivan layering deep space chords and gentle intergalactic melodies atop a tough-but-rubbery beat. The sweatier and sleazier 'Night Nurse' boasts fizzing, fill-happy drum machine percussion and deep space chords that recall the early years of Detroit techno, while 'Porcupine Grove' is a snappy, pitched-up romp rich in crunchy TR-909 beats, faintly foreboding background chords and tight melodic loops.

Straight To The Source
Straight To The Source (limited 180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MOSAIC LTDX3. Rel: 25 Nov 19
  1. Straight To The Source (7:07)
  2. Hypnotonic (West Side Shuffle) (8:44)
Review: After they last shared wax on Mosaic back in 2017, UK dub techno veteran Steve O'Sullivan and prolific minimal house rising star Frazer Campbell link up once again for the sleek and sophisticated sounds of "Straight To The Source". It's a shuffling, funky workout with understated b-lines to suck you in and subtle splashes of reverb to shape out a heady atmosphere. "Hypnotonic (West Side Shuffle)" on the flip has a more bubbling, psychedelic quality to it, without losing that cool Mosaic veneer that makes these joints so workable in so many different situations.

  1. Hold Up (6:23)
  2. Generation (6:02)
  3. Space Mind (6:45)
  4. Looking For New World (6:37)
Review: Chat Noir Tools is back with this second release by Parisian upstart Occibel, which showcases four uncompromising tracks designed for the dancefloor. On the Generation EP, there is a mix of house, tech and breakbeat inspirations that the label quite boldly claim is 'part of this generation that frees itself from genres to better appropriate them.' With that in mind, the hypnotic and bass-driven bounce of "Hold Up" takes the best part of classic UK tech house and modern eastern European influence, while the title track takes in the ravey and retro influence of current Berlin post-minimal sounds, as do the Yorkshire bleep aesthetics on B side cut "Space Mind".

  4. Morning Glory
  5. C Ring
  6. Snarecrow
  7. Bitchslap
Review: Stunningly beautiful double-pack from OCH for Autoreply Music's 20th release. Following on from output on renowned labels like PAL SL, Trelik, Bass Culture he returns to Autoreply with seven tracks of playable perfection. By focusing on stripped-back percussive grooves, sparse 909 drum-programming and ultra fine-tuned dynamics he certainly proves with tracks "Samarkand Sulci" and "Snarecrow" that the original jackin' house/techno sound will always have plenty of life and soul. "Don't Fight It" is an 8.5 minute acid builder featuring haunting vocals and crisp synths whilst the bass driven dub of "Enceladus" wouldn't be complete without live delays and distorted pianos. Check Out "Morning Glory" for a surprise contender for this years balearic soundtrack or "C Ring" for ultimate warmth. Tracks for every situation and not to be missed!

Dickens Tracks Volume 2
Cat: SL 13. Rel: 28 Apr 14
  1. Cross Check
  2. Star Of Hope
  3. The Magic Flute
Review: Following on from his 2010 "Dickens Tracks" EP
for London's PAL SL, OCH drops the eagerly awaited 2nd edition to the
series. As a producer his sound stands out through fusing stripped-back,
jackin' drums with sharp, swinging hats always adding an injection of
analog warmth through sparse, synth arrangements. A1's "Cross Check"
stays true to the labels early roots by using the bare essentials of
house music to create a hypnotic, highly effective floor-mover. On the
flip, "Star Of Hope" is an interlude, set-starter or vinyl DJ tool. B2's
"The Magic Flute" has a relaxed, sunny Chicago feeling teasing with
lush samples, driving bass and rock-solid beats. Mastered at D&M.

  3. The Healer (6:29)
  4. Linear Response Function (8:43)
  5. Incompressible Flow (6:41)
  6. Lovers Roll (6:41)
Review: It's been a hot minute since we heard something new from Och, but he's back on Autoreply with a double 12" of high-grade, stripped back tech house shot through with oodles of imagination. "Panamax" is the consummate dubby house track, a true immersion chamber of a track, while "The Sadness" brings a shuffling groove and some peppy key stabs to the table. "The Healer" is a more overtly minimal affair that would sound at home on PAL SL, while "Linear Response Function" keeps things tight and focused with a sturdy rhythmic framework and some spartan piano notes. "Incompressible Flow" has a submerged jazzy undercurrent to it, and "Lovers Roll" gets into that freaky house bounce heard on "The Sadness". Overall, it's another sterling grip of refined tracks from a seasoned pro.

Cold Fusion EP
Cat: INFUSE 016. Rel: 21 Sep 16
  1. Get Away (vinly only) (6:22)
  2. Roll Da Beats (6:48)
  3. Making Moves (5:57)
Review: Fuse London sub label returns with some more homegrown talent in the form of brilliant duo Damian Daley & Danny Dixon aka OdD with more futuristic minimal house. On the A side we've got the tough rolling groove of "Get Away" which is perfect to make your transition into the peak time hour. On the flip, the rolling continues with the appropriately titled "Roll Da Beats"; no guesses how this one sounds, but definitely rolls deeper and druggier than the A side. It's perfect for the after hours and those ragga samples are a nice touch. Finally "Making Moves" is a dreamy and hypnotic deep house journey with that modulating synth stab carrying the track nicely atop of some emotive chords.

Cat: OM 007. Rel: 03 Dec 18
  1. Tidal Wave (6:55)
  2. Zero Gravity (7:15)
  3. Lunar Blueprint (12:15)
Review: London based minimal producers Damian Daley and Danny Dixon have been steadily building up their catalogue of reduced rollers since 2013. As well as appearances on Sol Asylum, Tapes Of Old and SPORTS, their own OdD Music label has carried some of their most essential tracks. Waxing Gibbous continues the story with an assured selection of floor-primed workouts, leading in with the slender and seductive tones of "Tidal Wave." Things take a spikier turn with the heavy bass throwdown of "Zero Gravity," and then "Lunar Blueprint" stretches out across the B side in a rolling configuration of dubbed out incantations and insistent, needlepoint beats.

  1. Track 1 (7:24)
  2. Track 2 (6:09)
  3. Track 3 (6:21)
Review: Following previous outings on Blind Box and Half Baked, OddMann strike out on their own with a self-titled label to carry their crafty twists on the minimal house and techno formula. There's quite a tough, old-skool finish to "Track 1" on this no-nonsense 12", tapping up the early UK techno vibe in all its swooning pads and errant bleeps. "Track 2" is more aligned with the clean lines and head-nodding grooves of European minimal, but there's still plenty of space for surreal sound design in between the drums. "Track 3" dials up the swing and gets seriously funky, keeping things stripped back to let the DJ do their thing.

  1. Trifasico (7:53)
  2. Trifasico (Funk E remix) (7:01)
  3. Tensake (11:52)
Review: Two years ago, Ogeid joined forces with Funk-E to deliver a quietly impressive collaborative EP on Adult Only Shape. Here the producer resurfaces on Pleasure Zone with a solo debut single that delivers more ear-pleasing blends of tech-house and deep house. The A-side is all about 'Trifasico', a lolloping fusion of analogue-rich, alien-sounding tech-house grooves and fluid deep house motifs. Ogeid's simultaneously crunchy and dreamy original is fittingly remixed by old pal Funk-E, whose bumpin' and trippy tweak pays tribute to the more glitch-fuelled end of the tech-house spectrum. We'd also recommend checking flipside 'Tensake', a terrific, 12-minute track that wraps swelling deep house chords and Motor City style sci-fi sounds around a deliciously jacking drum machine beat.

  1. Place Des Fetes (6:58)

  3. Place Des Fetes (Rich NxT remix) (6:33)
Review: Given that his bulging discography boasts over a decade's worth of releases for the likes of Tsuba. BPitch Control, No Fit State and Dogmatik, it would be fair to describe Samuel "Okain" Thalman as as reliable source of rock solid tech-house treats. Certainly, there's plenty to set the pulse racing on the Berlin-based Frenchman's first INFUSE EP, from the deep and spacey, sub-heavy bounce of opener "Place Des Fetes", to the breezier, breakbeat-driven crunchiness of swirling bonus cut "Magic Box". Rich NxT lends a hand on the flipside, turning in a rolling, mind-altering remix of "Place Des Fetes" that smothers a rubbery, low-slung bassline and snare-heavy beats with bubbly electronics and drifting, dubbed-out synth riffs.

Review: It's not often that you get to see Alan Oldham stepping out under his own name. The legendary Detroit artist is more commonly spotted as DJ T-1000 (or designing iconic artwork for techno labels) but this time around he's sharing some more house-minded delights for Finale Sessions. "Don't Take Me" is a haunting, mystical slice of deep house that fits into the Finale narrative perfectly, while "Wild" too offers up a distinctive approach that manages to be both refined and yet imbued with that Detroit roughness. "Breathe" may well be the best jam on the record, dealing in subtle threads of melody that conjure up the perfect dubby 4/4 confection.
