Cat: HJP 076. Rel: 11 Mar 15

  2. Kime Ne (Ricardo Villalobos version 1) (16:34)
  3. Kime Ne (Ricardo Villalobos version 2) (16:04)
Review: Using the Turkish psychedelic project Insanlar as a jump off point, Honest Jon's have enlisted Ricardo Villalobos to turn out one of his grandiose remix projects that gels so naturally with more exotic sound sources. The original of "Kime Ne" is already an enchanting, Moog-infused groover rich with traditional vocals, and then Mr Villalobos locks the ingredients in for a typically cosmic ride into stripped and hypnotic house territory, letting the lutes intertwine with dusty reams of percussion using that alchemists touch that could only come the man himself. The remix spreads itself over two sides of wax, leaving one side of the double pack free for a fetching etching as well.

Paper EP
Paper EP (12")
Cat: MACROM 17. Rel: 28 Apr 10
  1. Paper
  2. Sienna
  3. Brittle
Review: Oliver Ho has been making standout house and techno for over ten years now. As he continues to develop his sound under his Raudive moniker, he drops the experimental and unique yet wonderfully intriguing "Paper" EP on Macro.

Throughout those years, we have seen a variety of styles from Ho. We saw the deep and dark tribal sound of his Universal album and then dark and abstract sound of his Veil album. His funkier house sound also seeped through under his Birdland project. But it is as Raudive that he blend all these style and ideas into one place. Last year’s "Cone" EP under the moniker was a huge success for Macro, who quickly established him as an important player within their family. Now he returns to the imprint to deliver one of their most club orientated, yet distinctively forward thinking EPs, "Paper."

After the percussive, eerie intro of the title track, a subterranean rolling bassline opens up as he takes the tribal sound of his releases and morphs it into a slower, deeper minimal sound that fuses the funk of house and the electronics of techno. Haunting strings scratch over the top, building this strange atmosphere that is then intensified by the injection of power into the beat. It is a truly unique track that bends a sound of its own into a bona fide club tune. "Brittle" takes hypnotism to the next level. Its relentless, repetitious and manic vexation patterns blow you away amid pounding beats and short blasts of vocal loops. "Sienna" winds things down with an experimental vibe that is totally devoid of a beat. Melodic strings play out above the warmth of grainy crackles in this masterpiece.

Macro have built their reputation on providing more than just club music. With a release as different and as cutting-edge as "Paper," it’s no wonder that Raudive has become one of the most important artists for their label.

  8. New Roots (7:53)
Review: Rhythm Plate are absolute powerhouses when it comes to delivering top-notch tech house, and they're back once again on Pressed For Time with this sizable payload of classy joints. There's a timeless quality to this stuff, whether it's the late-night swirl of "Sacrement" or the choppy, quirked-up groove of "Every Kind Of People With Any Kind Of Soul". Out of time and out of mind, the Plate just bring the kind of satisfaction to club music that could launch a thousand sessions. For the late night crew, for the mid-morning rollers and the sophisticated toe-tappers in between, sink your ear-teeth into this generous serving but whatever you do, don't call it an album.

What's In The Box EP
Cat: FUSE 016. Rel: 01 Apr 15
  1. Defy (7:00)
  2. My Love (Vinyl Only) (5:38)
  3. Twang (6:13)
  4. Cannonball (6:01)
Review: It's a welcome return to FUSE for one of the London institution's main players in Rich NXT with What's In The Box (Seven reference anyone?) his first full release for the label in almost a year. Deep and dubby is how "Defy" rolls, a track largely defined by its playful keys, fizzing textures, and non-stop crisp groove, whilst the vinyl only "My Love" is a much more stripped back affair with the occasional vocal sample adding colour to a sparse production. On the B-side, "Twang" throws some Chi-town keys into the mixer before deviating into a rubbery sound that no doubt informed the title and "Cannonball" closes out the record with six minutes of minimal house brimming with atmosphere.

Perfect Like You
Cat: PAMPA 020. Rel: 19 Feb 14
  1. Perfect Like You
  2. Woolloomooloo
Review: Ex-resident Tresor DJ Dave DK and new name Ricoshei provide Pampa Recordings with their first release of the year. First up is the poppy "Perfect Like You", which would feel right at home on Kompakt thanks to its similarities to Superpitcher's "Joanna". On the B-side is the track "Woolloomooloo", which takes its name from a harbourside suburb in Sydney that's home to famous Australians like Russell Crowe and ex-Manchester United goal keeper Mark Bosnich. Nevertheless, the track itself is a moody and phosphorescent, almost ambient, excursion through synthy textures and uplifting vibes.

Review: Eyetone's second release features three club tracks fully equipped and tailor-made for today's dancefloor by one of the most talented yet elusive producers of the house scene.
Leon Roberts' music has always maintained a timeless sound and done all his talking. Eyetone were fortunate to track down one of the true vanguards of the scene and dust off the DATS from his studio for a timely reminder on how the past has helped shape the current and future to come.
Originally conceived over ten years ago and full of groove and soul that pours out from his machines, all three club tracks speak firmly for themselves and will find a home in your record box for years to come.
This is no nostalgic release but an ode to the old school with a release that is relevant and more significant than ever in today's ever expanding scene.
It's a pure delight to welcome one of the most respected producers of the house scene to a new audience now ready and thirstier than ever to discover more about house music's glorious past.

Roche Edits 002
Cat: RCHDTS 002. Rel: 14 Aug 20
  1. Hollywood (6:46)
  2. A Trabajar (7:49)
  3. Clementines (5:15)
Review: Berlin's Roche Madame crew is keeping quiet about the identities of the producers behind its "Roche Edits" series, in part because of the sample-heavy nature of the tracks on show. Having previously borrowed bits from a Depeche Mode classic on the series' 2019 debut, this belated sequel opens with a bright, breezy, chunky and funky number that makes use of numerous samples from the epic 12" version of Frankie Goes To Hollywood classic "Rage Hard", including Pamela Stephenson's infamous spoken word section. Over on the flip, "A Trabajar" wraps tech-house beats and spacey electronics around a low-slung, punk funk style groove, while "Clementines" is a whirlwind of tactile tech-house grooves and dreamy choral vocals.

Review: Way before the world had fallen in love with the decidedly mind-altering riffs and rhythms of "Geht's Nocht", Roman Flugel was making a name for himself under the Roman IV pseudonym. It was way back in 1995 that he made his debut with "Altes Testament", a classic chunk of Detroit-influenced tech-house that was only the second release on Playhouse. A second 12" followed - featuring the brilliant "Green Tea" - but then little else from Flugel's Roman IV moniker. This new four-tracker for Running Back, then, promises to be something of a treat. In many ways, the German label is the perfect home for Flugel's Roman IV exploits. Famed for releasing long, loopy deep and tech-house epics - think Mark E, Move D and Radio Slave - Running Back will no doubt have been delighted to secure the services of their big-hitting countryman. "La Paloma", then, promises much - and delivers. The title track itself is a hypnotic delight - a ten-minute epic that works all-manner of barely-audible samples (distant bells, jazz samples, crackly pianos) into a weighty, late night tech-house groove. But there's plenty more to enjoy, too. The decidedly trippy "Lucy" wraps dubbed-out chords around a relentless subterranean bassline, while "Sa Celenta" takes a leaf out of Mark E's book by focusing the action around a lazy disco loop and bassline. Welcome back, Roman.

Shut Me Down
Cat: CLP 001. Rel: 16 Dec 13
  1. Shut Me Down (The Mole & Hreno Wet Hog mix)
  2. Shut Me Down (original)
  3. Shut Me Down (The Mole & Hreno Dry Hog mix)
Review: Commencing proceedings on the Construct label comes a release from the newly formed partnership of Kitty Yo artist Richard Davis with perennial tech house champs Swayzak. Their resulting "Shut Me Down" is a distinctive beast laden with pained strings and sultry trumpet lines of a driving rhythmic undercarriage. The Mole and Hreno team up to deliver two remixes of the original that delve into separate characteristics of the music. The "Wet Hog Mix" creates an immersive bath of low-end melody and reverb washes with just enough of that bittersweet content from the original to see the link, while the "Dry Hog Mix" goes all out on the drums for a heads-down tool of a rigid nature.

Review: Nestled comfortably on his constant home of Erased Tapes, Rival Consoles imparts another collection of plush forays into warm, melodic synthesis for those who like their instrumental electronic music scuffed with a little earthly charm. With the same starry-eyed innocence that bursts out of Nathan Fake's music, tracks like "Helios" leap with great strokes of synth and upsurging drums, carefully running threads of live instrumentation into the fold through some canny processing. The progression of each track is a beautifully crafted story with pleasant surprises aplenty but always reaching a logical resolution, making for a thoroughly rounded and satisfying listening experience without losing that all important bite of intrigue.
