Kultura Zvuka #002
  1. Bodin & Jacob - "Sloushnash" (7:06)
  2. Alec Falconer & Kizoku - "Ricard Refreshmen" (7:05)
  3. Bejenec - "I Don't Do Festivals But" (6:20)
  4. Sasha Zlykh - "Thugged Out Pissed Off" (8:03)
Review: For the sophomore release on Ukraine's Kultura Zvuka, we have a right bunch of heavy hitters representing the global minimal tech house scene on the A side, with Traffic head honchos Bodin & Jacob bringing the sound of Frankfurt on "Sloushnash" while Brit Alec Falconer teams up with Kizoku for some bleepy retro electro bass on "Ricard Refreshmen". On the flip, it's an entirely local affair going back to Ukraine with Bejenec harking back to the golden rave days on "I Don't Do Festivals But" and Sasha Zlykh's trippy afterhours techno jam "Thugged Out Pissed Off" being a sure shot to bang the party.

  3. Komponente & Kurilo - "Dobre Visim" (6:11)
  4. Komponente & Kurilo - "Na Zlo Vsim" (6:30)
Review: Ukraine's Tvir label continues to present a steady stream of quality sounds from emergent artists across the electronic music spectrum. Now on the fourth installment of their 'limited' series, they pit two partnerships against each other on a side of wax each. Bodin & Jacob shore up on the A side with two individual takes on electro and broken beat that swerve typical genre tropes to deliver something genuinely fresh. On the flip Komponente & Kurilo bring something a bit more rugged - a kind of ragga-infused rave-techno hybrid that could sit comfortably next to Neil Landstrumm in the dirty end of the dance pile.

Stuttgart to Parkdale EP (Kevin Over remix)
Cat: SEL 002. Rel: 26 May 20

  2. 1988 (7:31)
  3. Last Dance (7:08)
  4. Last Dance (Kevin Over remix) (6:43)
Review: Following a sterling first drop from Nick Holder, Selections return in fine style with this EP from Tobi Danton. This is proper deep house in the modern mode - crisp beats and silky smooth synth lines shot through with a spaced-out attitude. Just tune in to "That's Right" and find yourself transported to the dancefloor of your dreams. "1988" is equally light and limber, with a classy vocal sample heralding the Chicago roots of the music, while "Last Dance" takes on a more anthemic tone with its strong melodic core and uplifting bump. Kevin Over comes on board for a remix of "Last Dance" that treats the original with care, edging some 90s motifs, dubby flourishes and a tougher jack into the mix without losing that hazy mood.

  2. MINIMALAFRIKA - "Drakma Queen" (5:25)
  3. Robotalco - "No More Disco" (4:51)
  4. Klubbhuset - "SS0817" (6:11)
Review: The high grade, leftfield approach to house music Lyssna have set out as their MO continues in fine style on this new Colours series, starting with the Yellow EP and a strong cast of characters from the outer reaches. Riciar Ghir opens up proceedings with the tumbling deep house of "Cargo", making the keys dance with distinction and injection a subby rumble where it counts. Minimal Afrika follow that up with a percussive tryst entitled "Drakma Queen" that blossoms into a sumptuous ambient excursion. Robotalco takes a very different approach with some classically pumping sample-powered house music to shake feel-good fists to, and then Klubbhuset finishes up with an impassioned romp through peak time disco licks for the peak of the night.

Synthetic Gold 3
Synthetic Gold 3 (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: SGR 003. Rel: 13 Mar 17
  1. Khan - "Leni On The Cross (Olympia)" (7:44)
  2. Eloi Brunelle - "Neneh" (5:44)
  3. Andres Garcia - "Invisivel" (9:31)
Review: The Synthetic Gold story continues to unfold in the most curious nooks and crannies of the minimal techno scene, as this third volume welcomes in tracks selected by Anestie Gomez. Khan is in a looped up, insistent cycle loaded with alien synth tones and a focused rhythmic hiccup of a beat, truly aiming for the psych-out end of the night. Eloi Brunelle makes things a touch funkier on "Neneh", deploying choice splashes of dubbed out colour in between the sharp strut of the drums. Andres Garcia then spreads himself across the B-side with the loping funk of "Invisivel", working all manner of freaky sounds around the scuffed sway of the beats.

  1. The Arc (6:31)
  2. The Arc (Stringless mix) (4:59)
  3. D Drive (5:42)
  4. Transcending (6:26)
Review: Longstanding Detroit deepsmith Kage returns on his brand new label Michigander. The result? Three superlative exercises in synth soul and an on-point version for later hours. "The Arc" prowls with all the string-soaked majesty of an early Rolando cut while the stringless version hits a little harder. "D Drive" jacks with a slappy bass groove while tipping a slight nod to Yazoo with its vibrant riffy ripples while "Transcending" is all about the big dubby synth washes and off-kick bass palpitations. Let's hope there'll be more to gander from Michigander very soon.

Review: Kimochi Sound introduces a new artist for their 30th release. This debut record is all deep beats and breaks and it's full of the fuzzy feels and swollen atmospheres we've come to expect from the imprint. It's a bit of a mini album, moving from Ilian Tape techno influences to a closing number reminiscent of Ulrich Schnauss.

The Town
The Town (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: BNB 003. Rel: 28 Jan 19
  1. The Town (6:40)
  2. Chrome Moon (5:58)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: After launching Brush & Broom with two solo releases, maverick German producer Kalbata keeps his followers guessing yet again with this collaborative release with the equally unpredictable Maayan Nidam. "The Town" is a surefire party starter made up of catchy bleep lines, quivering rhythmic flashes and lots of shimmering FX sends that suggest this was a live jam from two talented producers locked in the groove. "Chrome Moon" takes a deeper, more meditative approach without losing those heavy echo chamber washes, where the spring reverb and buckwild delay feedback rein supreme. Wonderful, free-tripping results from an unexpected meeting of minds.

  1. Feature Me (Michael Mayer remix)
  2. Miles Away (Sascha Funke mega remix)
  3. Steinbeisser (Wighnomy Brothers remix)
Review: Michael Mayer, the Kompakt veteran, comes as the whispering intro, but soon enough unfolds as a dance track of first-rate quality. Sascha Funke's "Miles Away" on the opposite gets down to business right away - striking beats and a sing-along melody of a reverb synth that, towards the end, builds up to an upbeat peak. Wighnomy Brothers introduce us to their version of "Steinbeisser" smoothly, but in an exciting way. They did their remix without almost any beats at all and only concentrated on sounds in the typical Wighnomy Brothers style.

Cat: AUTO 022. Rel: 15 Jun 15
  1. Time Cures
  2. Rise & Shine
  3. Knotting
  4. Spheres
Review: Presented in 5mm spine, LTD edition full-artwork colour sleeve which fits Parts 1-3. Having scored on Mosiac, Bodyparts and Project London, Kashawar returns to Autoreply to complete his critically acclaimed "Moments & Lost Memories" series. Here the young German star steps up with "Time Cures" a hook driven weapon possibly paying a slower respect to Mill's "Purpose Maker" releases. MPC style swing infects the groove on "Rise and Shine" adding soothing vocals and subtle acid lines to Side A. Flip the disc for deep, funking atmospherics on "Knotting" and "Spheres" adds some of Kashawar's early morning dub magic to the package. Look out for repressed Parts 1 & 2 to complete your collection!

  4. No Time To Explain (9:23)
Review: Romania's penchant for minimal and long history of serving up expert producers knows no bounds. It is the Varme imprint that here continues that fine tradition with four busy and hypnotic cuts from Kashawar. It's all about molten and mind melting acid on "Transmission Sent", with its party breaks all primed to get you hooked. "Physical Tranceaction" is more peak time and direct, then "Circuits" will rewire your brain with its complete arrangement and unresolved drum loops. The trip completes in downbeat fashion with the slow bass movements and deft ambient beauty of "No Time To Explain".

Review: Founded by Acid Pauli and Nico Stojan in Berlin, the Ouie label is earning itself a fine reputation. Jonathan Kaspar is next to step up having put out his house grooves on the likes of Pets Recordings, Upon. You and Kompakt. 'Tia' opens up with a delicate, intricately constructed sound that pairs airy melody with deeply buried rhythms. 'Bigna' then rolls deep on body bass and swaying drums designed for late night absorption and last of all 'Nea' is an organic, smooth rolling tune for melancholic moments. This is artful, emotive tech by any measure.

JDF
Cat: JFD 001. Rel: 14 Oct 20
  1. True Out Of Brew (13:55)
  2. From The Best Sources (12:21)
Review: Berlin based Denis Kaznacheev is a Russian artist who makes slick minimal techno, but he is also embroiled in a legal battle. It is alleged that he has been involved in money laundering and dark web activities and has been arrested by German authorities who are trying to extradite him to the United States to face trial. He maintains his innocence, and this label has been set up to raise funds in order to try and help him. Musically, it's deft and detailed tech with hooky drum loops and wonky synth sounds designed to be heard on hi class sound systems. The A-side track is the first to use is own voice, and the flip was written just before his arrest.

Cat: GROW 006. Rel: 02 Mar 15
  1. Isotelus Rex (original mix)
  2. Isotelus Rex (Daze Maxim remix)
  3. Proetida (original mix)
Review: Grow returns with the record Isotelus Rex by Denis Kaznacheev, complete with a remix by Daze Maxim. The title track Isotelus Rex, a 14 minute work, true to grow's eccentric nature, a track at once playful and deeply neurally stimulating, sure to shake one's body and intrigue one's mind. Wonderful decaying tones, subtly jazzy, intricate electronic communications interrelate over an irresistible bass and percussive performance, a groove which will make your swing. B1 is Daze Maxim's remix, with a more ethereal approach to Isotelus Rex, it begins through a beautiful synth. Then grows a fast and intricate bass arrangement, providing a confidently vibed way though the cosmic landscape, also another great track for the dance floor, as the same physical swing as in original is felt strong. B2 Proetida, the second original work by Denis Kaznacheev of the release, is of raw, almost rude, attitude, a strong bass descends in steps, a determined momentum, the driving force of an industrious process.

He's had a few previous releases on labels such as Onovu & Leap Records and was featured on a recent V/A EP on Roundabout Sounds entitled, "Fly Pattern EP". Label boss Joe Babylon reached out to Detoit house legend D Wynn to remix the title track. Review: There's something brilliantly unfussy and matter-or-fact about Matthew Farrow's latest outing as Kepler, which marks his first appearance on no nonsense Mulen sub-label Hoarder. The four collected cuts are subtly varied and all aimed squarely at the dancefloor, with Farrow striking a near perfect balance between rolling dancefloor hypnotism, funk-fuelled glitch-house and bottom-heavy peak-time intent. We're particularly enjoying the spacey and ultra-deep swing of "Self Hypnosis" and the weighty, stripped-back pump of opener "Few Days' - a track built around little more than fluid sub-bass, crunchy drums and metallic electronic riffs - but the organ-powered, U.S garage-influenced tech-house bump of "French Lessons" is not far behind.

Review: Matthew Farrow brings his Kepler project back to Aesthetic following sterling turns on Silencio, Pathway Traxx and Pleasure Zone. The vibe is infectiously bouncy on opening track "Us01", while "Heads Down" stays true to its title as it favours a subtle approach for meditative immersion in the tech house tradition. "Dream State" finds Farrow exploring his jazzy tendencies once more with some ace, ear-catching chords that skip around a shuffling beat. "Locker" rounds the EP out with a mellow, dubby groover shaped out by gaseous pads and underpinned by a subtle, wriggling synth line.

Review: Kiasmos are a Reykjavik based duo comprised of BAFTA awarded composer Olafur Arnalds and Janus Rasmussen from the band Bloodgroup. The sounds of classical music and electro-pop collide fantastically on this release. First track "Drawn" is a sublime and emotional serving of trip-hop with Arnald's signature piano style floating on top of Rasmussen's immaculately programmed beats. And then that lush string section comes drifting in, its magnificent! "Gaunt" features some mutant pan pipes accompanied by a bleepy melody and sub-bass pulsations, but once again balanced out by Arnalds' lush piano and strings arrangements. On the flip "Swept" is a dreamy and melancholic deep house cut that could have come out on Kompakt, it's that good. There's even a remix of it by men of the moment Tale Of Us, who revise the track into one of their signature dark and adrenalised journey tracks, it's well done!

Review: Ukranian producer Kirik is the second fixture on J Room, bringing a plush and melodic sound for his fifth EP of the year (look out for other sterling turns on Colors Of Crocus and Bosom LTD amongst others). "No Boys Club" leads the way with expressive keys darting around a crisp minimal house groove, while "Be Easy" ups the shuffle while maintaining the plush melodic content. JALE are on hand to remix "No Boys Club", turning the original into an addictive, wriggling minimal cut that gets right under the skin, and then "Furtive Footsteps" closes the EP out with a more mechanical workout peppered with artful sound design.
