Review: These days, we're all familiar with Jan Jelinek's trademark brand of dusty, dubbed-out, jazz-sampling downtempo explorations. That wasn't the case when Loop Finding Jazz Records, his acclaimed debut album, first appeared back in 2001. It has since become an in-demand item, making this reissue more than handy. It remains a fine album; a blazed shuffle through a sonic world where dub techno, ambient, minimal house, jazz and downtempo grooves and seductive vinyl crackle merge into one intoxicating hybrid sound. It's not showy and over-the-top, but rather becalmed and subtly seductive. In other words, it's still a brilliant album and if you don't own already own a copy, you should add this to your cart sharpish.

Serie EP (180 gram vinyl 12" limited to 250 copies)
Cat: VARA 005. Rel: 15 Aug 17
  1. Hacia Ningun Lado (8:27)
  2. Dresdener Strasse (10:41)
  3. Hacia Ningun Lado (TC80 remix) (6:35)
Review: Neik's debut came only a few months back, when the minimal-minded producer stepped onto our charts with a quirky little 12" for the fledgling Fun Records. A quick follow-up to cement his name was essential, and that's exactly what he's gone and done with this new EP for the Vara label's fifth outing. "Hacia Ningun Lado" and "Dresdener Strasse" proudly dominate the A-side as if it were a shooting ground, pushing forwards with two solid, tech-minded grooves that spew cerebral harmonics from all corners. On the flip, TC80 has the entire span of the vinyl to offer his version of the latter, and the results are one mean minimal punch with a subtle taste of Chicago house funk. Solid.

Esperantza EP (reissue) (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: BOND 12045. Rel: 09 May 18
  1. Esperantza (6:35)
  2. Uppercut (7:00)
  3. Lux (7:29)
  4. Avoid (6:59)
Review: More deep and slinky tech house grooves for the late night here, courtesy of rising Romanian duo NTFO - this time for Leipzig based Bondage Music. This release follows up some great releases of late by the likes of Mihai Popoviciu, Sascha Dive and Tuccillo. On the Esperanza EP, there is the rolling and hypnotic bounce of the title track, the druggy and minimal groove of "Uppercut" (that's more suited to afterhours shenanigans) while the sexy deepness of flipside cut "Lux" shows a more sensitive and charming side to the Timisoara based duo's ever developing sound.

OLO 2 (12")
Cat: OLO 2. Rel: 08 Nov 17
  1. Track 1 (10:30)
  2. Track 2 (7:26)
  3. Track 3 (8:38)
Review: We'd like to say that Italy's mysterious Olo series launched in a blaze of publicity earlier this year, but the label actually took exactly the opposite approach. Happily (for the people behind Olo, at least), their first 12" found its way into the hands of many top tech-house selectors. Predictably, they've said nothing about the identity of those behind this follow-up. On the A-side you'll find a gently trippy, hugely hypnotic excursion that justifies its near 11-minute length thanks to some neatly timed percussive shifts. Flip to the B-side for the acid-fired micro-house chug of "Track 2" and the darker, alien-sounding tech-house funk of "Track 3". While the A-side is probably the best bet for bigger rooms, we're actually enjoying the B-side cuts far more.

FH11 EP (12")
Cat: FH 11. Rel: 30 Apr 18
  1. Flesh White (5:56)
  2. Grey Blue Blue Grey Yeah (6:18)
  3. Purple Shaped/Where's Your Sister? (6:17)
  4. Eggs In Moonshine (6:20)
Review: Next up on Pablo Tarno and Onirik's Finest Hour is Berlin based, Half Baked main man Robin Ordell - with more trippy and quirked out minimal house. This follows up some great releases on top labels Discobar and Hello?Repeat. Ordell is no stranger to the afterhours, and this A.M. expert displays just what it takes to get weird during the morning set on the reduced boompty action of "Grey Blue Blue Grey Yeah" on the A side. The flipside features the spooky and glitchy mini-funk of "Purple Shaped/Where's Your Sister?" plus the hypnotic bump and shuffle of "Eggs In Moonshine" closing out this fine EP in style. This follows up Ordell's last appearance for the label back on FH:04, back in 2015. Tip!

  30. Phon O - "Schn33"
Review: Oliver Schories has long been one of the hardest-working men in the tech-house scene, as has vast discography attests. Put it this way: he's definitely earned the opportunity to mix the latest volume in Global Underground's NuBreed series, which has previously provided early mix CDs from the likes of Steve Lawler, Sander Kleinenberg and Habischman. Wisely, Schorie decided to make the two-disc mix-up a blend of hot new cuts from Teutonic talents (Rico Puestel, Alexander Aurel), relatively well-known scene staples (much loved cuts and remixes from the likes of Martin Landsky, Darius Syrossian, Gheist and Axel Boman) and older, lesser-known gems. These include a terrific and largely overlooked Chateau Flight remix of Atjazz's 2000 single "It's Complete".

TELUM 001 (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: TELUM 001. Rel: 09 Apr 18
  1. Track 1 (8:49)
  2. Track 2 (9:11)
Review: If you're after a dash of mystery minimalism, step this way. All we can tell you is that Telum is a new, publicity-shy label dedicated to letting "the music do the talking". No names (artists or tracks), just two tasty workouts that have already seen support from Raresh, Rossko and Ricardo Villalobos. The A-side is a surprisingly dreamy, deep space affair, with becalmed, intergalactic pads and bubbly electronics gentky rising above a subtly acid-flecked groove. Turn to the flipside for a slightly warmer riff on the same basic blueprint, where yearning synthesizer motifs cascade down over a tactile but chunky bassline, woozy chords and snappy, machine style percussion. Both tracks feel like the kind to soothe the frazzled minds and aching limbs of locked-in early morning dancers.

  8. Gheist - "Frequent Tendencies"
  9. Polaroit - "Leaving Alaska"
  10. Deorbiting - "Zero Wing" (short version)
  11. Bongbeck - "Winter Sleep" (Kalipo remix)
Review: For the sixth volume in Stil Vor Talent's ongoing Berlin-themed compilation series, the label has drawn inspiration from Tempelhofer Feld, a colossal park sited on land where one of the city's busiest airports once stood. As usual, the eleven tracks on show are all previously unheard and exclusive, with contributions coming from what the imprint describes as "a group of old and new faces". Highlights are plentiful, from the atmospheric, slowly building tech-house shuffle of Niko Schwind's remix of AFFKT's "Jan Mayen" and Armonica's ear-pleasing deep house take on Dele Sosimi afrobeat jam "Turbulent Times", to the booming peak-time menace of Jiggler's "Rising" and the glacial, slowly shifting December beauty that is Kalipo's synthesizer-heavy remix of Bongbeck's "Winter Sleep".

  1. Vid - "The Search" (11:57)
  2. Anthea - "Grumpy Cat" (6:28)
  3. Anthea - "The Fog" (6:28)
Review: When another Andromeda release hits the shelves we're just as excited as you are. Other than the obvious fact that it's Romanian, the label is shrouded in much mystery still, even after seven releases in; but we like that! An dromeda 07 serves up one brilliantly deep and hypnotic (as always) track by label mainstay and Bucharest hero Vid with the sublime "The Search" which in typical fashion flows on and on for nearly 12 minutes of bliss. On the flip they hand the reins to London deep house heroine Anthea who delivers two fine cuts: first up the trippy and cyclical "Grumpy Cat" with its swirling pads doing most of the basic trance induction while "The Fog" gets a bit more swing and shuffle on with its tough and dusty drums backing some dark atmospherics which you can imagine hearing during an overcast afternoon on a messy Sunday at Club der Visionaere.

Jooice 001 (12" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: JOOICE 001. Rel: 12 Feb 18
  1. Cookie Monster (8:00)
  2. Mango Maracuja (6:34)
  3. Farbig (6:02)
Review: Longtime enigma Matthias Wagner is a bit of a maverick when it comes to the dance music scene. Not only is this his first EP under his birth name, but the quirky German has released music under a whole other slew of aliases. This EP marks the first catalogue number for the Jooice label, and "Cookie Monster" does a great job at launching the first drum machine attack of the series, a loopy, leftfield tech-house number that sounds like it was made by aliens. The flip kicks off with "Mango Maracuja", a deeper, more broken neat sort of ticket, while "Farbig" provides a bleepy, skeletal tune that has more in common with electronic music's experimenters than the dance junkies.

Cat: ESSAYS 004. Rel: 28 Nov 12
  1. Casas Suenos
  2. Eversion
Review: Ever the smooth operator, Sven Weisemann conjures up an elegant two-track delight for his own Essays imprint that shows off both his classical leanings and his gift for house music in equal measure. "Casas Suenos" begins proceedings with its heart-wrenching piano tones, delicately played to complement the shimmering tambourine shake and careful chord pulses and overall testing just how deep house can go and still be considered house music. On the flip there's a surprising electro thread to the boom bap of the drums on "Eversion", while the dub techno chords and ethereal pads cool off those fiery beats to ensure the vibe remains austere and cultured.
