Review: There is an inviting darkness to the grooves crafted here by Raveld on the Synapse EP. It is a fine bit of contemporary and tasteful tech house that opens with the long form title tune. Snappy beats and sci-fi motifs define it as you head out on your cosmic trip. 'Panache' is full of smart studio FX and retro touches to make it a more peak time offering then 'The Night Before' will get you in a trance with its airy, playful sense of wispy melody. The deepest of the all is last tune 'Tidals' with its spinning hi-hats circling snares trapping you in sublime loops.

Review: London-based label For Those That Knoe returns with a terrific release by underrated Slovenian producer Vid Vai. He's been slowly yet steadily honing his craft over the last 12 years with releases on respected labels such as Assemble Music, Tvir, Gilesku and Oskar Offermann's White to name but a few. Laminar Flow also happens to be his first full-length, taking in a wide variety of moods and grooves along the way. Review: Marseille based Rafael Cerato is known for his emotional techno sound that has been heard on top labels like Diynamic Music, Stil Vor Talent, and his very own Ritual. He's also become quite the staple on Marc Romboy's Systematic Recordings, which back in 2015 released his anthemic 'Sekater', a sublime expression in dancefloor drama which still sounds as good today. Review: Mystical dreamweaver Edward has previously brought out some of his classiest club-tooled gear for Trelik, with 2018's Rumours EP being a particular highlight in his glittering career in minimal. Breaking a protracted silence for Baby Ford's label, this new three-tracker once more takes us into the unique atmospheric zone Edward occupies with his productions. 'The Giver' has an unnerving, desolate quality but it's also rock-solid in the rhythm department, with subtle threads of warmth to balance out the eeriness. 'Memory Motions' is a spicier cut with a pronounced house jack to propel a tense set of sonic motifs, with a special mention to the wobbly organ-like chord line. 'Tuned' is the most upfront of all the tracks, using some processed piano hooks and a full compliment of nagging, funkified ingredients to make a certified, if left-of-centre, party starter.

Review: Last year DisDat dipped into Andrew Weatherall's archive of unreleased music and unleashed 'Y.W Eleven', a deliciously chuggy, druggy, synth-heavy affair that sounded like the late producer's take on 'Enjoy The Silence'-era Depeche Mode after a fistful of hallucinogenic mushrooms. 'Y.W Fourteen', a kind of sequel mined from the same source, is a little breezier and quietly Balearic in tone, with attractively fluttering synth lines bubbling away atop a crunchy, mid-tempo electro beat and intergalactic electronics. The accompanying remix comes from the effervescent Ricardo Villalobos, who successfully re-imagines the track as a rubbery, bass-heavy chunk of locked-in dancefloor minimalism in his distinctively wonky-but-funky, otherworldly style.

Collecting tracks from seven releases spanning from 2014 to 2021, Rubicon serves as the project's Greatest Hits (for now). Review: Though 420 was originally recorded and released in April of 2020, Galcher Lustwerk's pandemic project is an exercise in counting and patience. Originally from a 16 track, 69 minute release only available for Bandcamp for $69 (or $4.20 per track), the 420 project brings us practically brand spanking new Galcher EP, just under a different name. Finally at an accessible price (and including signature Galcher vocals in a majority of the tracks to boot) this vinyl release hopes to bring more fans who missed the original release to the 420 club.

Review: Fuse off-shoot Locus is driving itself as vital as its parent label so far. And the 15th outing is another doozy from Casey Spillman. Drawing on spaced out house, breaks and electro as well as the underlying tech house that is this label's staple, he cooks up a fine new sound. 'Get Upper' is driving and punchy but with style and soul, then 'I Know' gets a little more unhinged with garage percussion and farting bass that will sound killer on a big system. There is a clean and serene melodic edge to 'Summer Dreaming' and its breezy groove, then 'Good Morning Ninety Free' rounds out with the best sound of the lot - a balmy, jazz tinged US house sound for the earliest hours in the morning.

Review: Mulen Records' VOY offshoot has long been a stable source of floor-friendly tech-house fare, though the imprint's reluctance to detail who has produced each EP remains a frustration. Whoever is behind the label's latest outing clearly knows what they're doing though. Take opener '14 A' for example: while the spacey sounds and chunky grooves employed neatly fit the contemporary tech-house blueprint, the assorted bleeps and ear-catching organ riffs sound like a glorious hangover from an earlier, more naive age. The tactile, huggable 'retro-futurist' feel continues on the flip via the dreamier '14 B', where Korg M1 riffs (think classic MK) and tight TB-303 motifs work wonderfully with the shadowy producer's glassy-eyed chords and Serotonin-fuelled pads.

Review: Weirdo minimal tech soul, anyone? Any takers should be directed towards this oddball release from Melchior Productions and Paul Walter. Two tracks of serious strangeness: timestretched vocals and repetitious yeahs blossom between the beat-thickets of Melchior's 'Yeah X 3', while many more percussive hits and cuts and clicks and pops and booms come courtesy of Walter's B-side, 'Xvive'. It's an impressive first foray for Maria Newyen's new imprint Scious; let's hope future 12"s stay just as weird.

Review: Chiwax are back this week with a more than welcome reissue of Wax Fruit's one-and-only release Whispers from 1994. This was one of many aliases sussed by Toronto-based producer Ron Allen, who some of you may know for his seminal work as one half of Psyance (with Hayden Andre Brown) who released on Plus 8, as well as his work under the names Aztech, The Apache Project and The R.A.S.E. The late night mood music of the title track is a true zeitgeist from the period in which it was released, while the looped-up disco sampling deep house of 'Just A Party' or 'Mindgames' over on the flip were equally as trendsetting as anything fellow Torontonians like Nick Holder or DJ Sneak were making at the time.

Review: French Theory dropped this much sought-after and enduring classic Lost On The Way To Destelbergen initially in 2006. It is a new beat anthem that has now been remastered by techno talent Thomas P Heckmann and still bears all the charm it had way back then. The original is a darkened hypnotic groove with stomping drums and sleek, haunting synths that lock you in for over eight minutes. 'Back To Destelbergen' is a shorter version with motorik kicks and then a final 'video edit' closes down. A must-cop 12" for sure.

Review: Second time around for Nina Kraviz's key early single Pain In The Ass, a two-tracker that was originally released on Rekids way back in 2009. This edition has been pressed to brilliant white vinyl, though otherwise it's the same as the original 12" release. That's no bad thing though, because the title track is a particularly druggy, wonky and out-there chunk of after-hours sleaze, with Kraviz layering ghostly electronic stabs and her own spoken word vocals over a sparse-but-heavy tech-house groove. Original B-side 'I'm Gonna Get You' is a slightly dreamier affair, with Kraviz singing over squelchy synth-bass, sustained deep space chords, chiming melodies and more stripped-back beats.

Even the mighty fabric compilations have rebranded and rethought, bringing the original legacy, FABRICLIVE included, to a respectful end at 200 outings. Strange, then, to think, that !K7's mighty offering to the world of "What should we listen to at the afters?" has arguably managed to become more relevant as the years have flown by.
There was a time when the series existed at the lighter end of club fare, with some examples barely even matching that description. These days, though, there's often a dance floor heaviness central to the selections, with Jessy Lanza's broken, bass-driven set a case in point. Pointless attempts to describe the music, and lazy track list namedropping aside, this is energy-packed, heads down, futurist stuff packed with infectious percussion.

Review: Steve O'Sullivan invites a trio of artists to lay down some serious head nodding beats for 'Rhythm Method Vol.4'. Calling on one of Canada's trusted talents and solid purveyors of deep grooves Jay Tripwire leads the charge with 'Mung Bean Medley'. There's simply no messing: pushing through a taught rhythmic workout, incessant toms and metallic tones etch deep into the mood - awash with dubbed out atmospherics and crafty touches that more than a give a nod to the dark house dubs of yesteryear. On the flip, 'Hidden Sequence' inject their creative flex, demonstrating the all important art of minimalist bounce with 'Synchro'. The kind of fully swung beats and tripped out twinges that brighten the groove more often than not when 7am comes calling. The svelte bustle and soothing tones of 'Makka' from Fletcher by contrast, soothe the mind and leaves plenty of room to kick back as weary limbs take their toll: a fine tonic indeed.

Review: UK producer Tom Carruthers really impresses with this full length for Rom Morelli's revered US imprint LIES. It is steeped in bleep traditions and old-school electronic sounds, but all with a fresh new perspective. Right off the bat, this record draws you in: there are early Chicago jack tracks like the opener 'Can You Feel It', melon-twisting deep cuts such as 'Cyclone' and chattery melodic jams like 'Fantasies' which all hark back to a different era. 'Forge' explores a mysterious world of interplanetary house, 'Quest For Rydm' echoes the sound of LFO and 'Channel Control' is pure dance floor heat. This is music for getting E'd up and losing yourself in the middle of a warehouse, and we love it.

In 'Binary Riddim' Steve delivers a two-part dub track spanning >13 minutes, seriously heavy in the low end; melancholy strings in the first half, progressing to outright menacing chord stabs in the latter. A versatile track offering something for both warm-up and the dancefloor. Complimenting on the flip are 'Mystic Light' and 'Lunar Eclipse' from Hydergine. Review: Germany's workhouse Rawax label is the sort of imprint that provides busy DJs with just the sort of tools they need to do their job. This latest drop veers away from the more traditional house it most often deals in to dip into sleek minimal territory. Giorgio Maulini is the man in control and 'Night Roads' is just like a nocturnal cruise down the motorway, with wispy neons flying past like headlights and a linear groove extending out below you like miles of tarmac. The rest of the EP remains just as heady and well-designed, with supple grooves and deft synths colouring in the small hours of the morning.

Review: Curity is a Russian artist who brings his distinctive Eastern European sounds to this new EP on Partout. He kicks it off with 'Reflexivity' which pairs silky synths and well swung claps with Detroit techno sounds that Derrick May once dubbed hi-tek soul. 'Aerial' is another majestic machine workout with its own sense of heart and warmth from the finger clicks, bulbous bass and neon, wispy synths. Review: Rub A Dub serve up a delicious set of vinyl only minimal and tech houser tools to kick off new label Substitute in slick fashion. The opener is a squelchy mix of bubbly bass and crispy hits with squirrelling synths fleshing it out. 'Theory 02' carries on in similar fashion with a slightly more spooky and unsettling vibe but still dynamic, rubbery bass. 'Theory 03' strips it back to some trippy sine wavs and late night tones designed for afterparty madness and Zlatnichi remixes the opener into something with a little more bite and funk. A useful EP for sure.

Review: Thomas Melchior's take on minimalist house and techno - wonky and off-kilter, but surprisingly funky, far-sighted and pleasingly atmospheric - is amongst the most accessible and ear-catching around. It's a sound that works as well on albums as it does on singles and EPs, so it's somewhat surprising to discover that Vulnerabilities is his first full-length as Melchior Productions since 2007. It's been worth the wait though, with the veteran producer offering up tracks that combine brilliantly programmed, often off-kilter drums with smooth but druggy basslines, tactile chords, addictive melodic refrains and his usual subtle (and occasional not to subtle) nods towards deep house, dub techno, two-step garage, trippy ambient and the quirky, funk-fuelled eccentricity of Ricardo Villalobos productions.

Review: Breathy trance lines and light drum snaps adorn the upper edges of this funky new EP from Velvet Velour, which drops imminently on Scratch Disks. Being by its very nature a 4x4 and floor-functional EP, there is an advanced palette of sound that weaves through and between this one's beats. 'Wonderful World Of You' is a strong highlight: some kind of rattly, resonant laser-synth sloshes about the mix, caressing our ears acoustically until the flow state is truly locked. 'No 172', meanwhile, ticks off the box as one for the garage heads. Impressive.

Review: London-based Japanese artist Junki Inoue founded Saisei last year with a stunning trio of releases featuring Kino-Moderno, COLOGNe and Suzukiski. Now the label sets out a more comprehensive mission statement for the sound they're exploring with this six-deep VA release featuring return appearances as well as some new faces. The overarching sound is one of 90s-flavoured techno with a melodic, melancholic quality as beautifully demonstrated by Palomatic on the stunning 'Under The Ground'. Interferon has enough punch packed into 'Blasting Soul' to stand up to some of the foundational Detroit techno gear, but crucially it's got plenty of heart to match its weighty impact. If you want to get a handle on how Saisei is progressing, or just need some fresh techno with soul and smarts, be sure to nab one of these gems.

Review: Dutch industrial techno producer Parrish Smith created Light Cruel & Vain over the course of nearly three years. Each track on the record was originally conceived solo, then further realised with the assistance of contributing musicians Sofiane Brahmi and Javier Vivancos. The collaborative where no studio sessions occurred due to the pandemic - the full collaboration conducted remotely. Review: Since launching two years ago, Bristol's We're Going Deep label has consistently delivered some of the deepest and most atmospheric club tracks around. The music they champion is, as many in the West Country would no doubt confirm, "proper deep". That's certainly the case with the tracks on the label's seventh multi-artist extravaganza. Acid Test regular Tin Man kicks things off with a touch of TB-303-doused proto-house minimalism ('I Said Acid'), before Rai Scott takes us 50 leagues below the sea on the ultra-deep, drowsy and hypnotic house cut 'I'll Meet You on the Dancefloor'. Over on side B, Sound Synthesis's 'Necessary Order' is a simply breath-taking trip into deep electro territory, while Roger Van Lunteren's EP-closing contribution is a deep (and deeply psychedelic) acid house trip.
