Seasons (12")
Cat: SF 016. Rel: 10 May 22
  1. German Spring (7:15)
  2. German Summer (7:16)
  3. German Fall (7:12)
  4. German Winter (7:00)
Review: German duo Andhim have been rolling out their epic strain of melodic techno and electronica for more than 12 years now, and they're still as inspired as ever. Once more appearing on their own Superfriends label, they're exploring a seasonal concept on this record which reflects on different times of year in their homeland. The vibes are perhaps to be expected, with 'German Summer' coming through as the big feel-good anthem for festival stages versus the brooding tech of 'German Fall'. It's 'German Winter' where things get more resolutely melancholic, though never at the expense of the beats and dynamic twists and turns.

  1. Vlad Arapasu - "Cosmic Book" (8:09)
  2. Alich & Simo - "Ahlia" (7:41)
  3. Lulla - "99 Year Old Port" (7:40)
  4. Petit Batou - "Tadam Tadam" (7:51)
Review: We've become relentless pushers of (albeit, only the best) minimal and tech house as of late, and of this batch, French label Stamp Records almost certainly head up the microgenre, microhouse. Welcoming four funky affiliates with a flair for fleeting feels, every track here is a beautiful vignette. In the future, when we have flying cars, Alich & Simo's 'Ahlia' might function as a fittingly dreamy and esoteric soundtrack for late cosmic nightrides. Meanwhile, Lulla's '99 Year Old Port' works better for scouring underwater sewage systems and future undersea tunnels. Sample-heavy, light and flighty.

  1. Ideas & Concepts (7:38)
  2. Elixir (4:58)
  3. Ideas & Concepts (DJ Qu remix) (4:38)
  4. Neutral Zone (6:10)
Review: Evan Baggs has always been one of those low key but highly rated artists that the heads lap up. It has been a while since we heard a new offering from him but time has serve him well, because this new one on Faith Beat is a perfect fusion of house, tech and techno. 'Ideas & Concepts' opens up with silvery slithers of perc, icy drums and grinding grooves overlaid with stiff vocals. 'Elixir' is another crunchy tech house cut and the DJ Qu remix then goes deep and dark on twitchy pads and rugged beats. 'Neutral Zone' closes down in cyborg fashion.

Energy EP
Energy EP (12")
Cat: YM 006. Rel: 06 May 22
  1. Energy (6:29)
  2. Feel It (6:14)
  3. Orgonaught (6:28)
  4. Record Is Over (6:39)
Review: Josh Baker is one of the UK's new school house artists. In the last few years he has become a bill topping DJ and chart topping producer with a wide range but also a keen eye for destructive dance floor sounds. His time out he lands on the cultured You & Me label with some turbocharged, spaced out house sounds that hark back to the classic vide game soundtrack era of the 90s. The bassline on opener 'Energy' is bulbous and soft edged beneath silky drum work. 'Feel It' is another cosmically minded bit of punchy electronic house funk with none chords and grinding bass, 'Orgonaught' then gets more wild with some flashy lasers and 'Record Is Over' sinks into a more deep, pensive and late night vibe.

  1. Sleep Paralysis (6:39)
  2. Forever Never (6:14)
  3. Astral Dance Party (5:47)
  4. Levitations (6:12)
Review: Beatific acid astral projections from Bobby, who debuts his first 12" for Japan's Astral Dance Party. Broken, strictly rhythmatic groovers abound on this 4-tracker, with 'Forever Never' wishing and washing about, from the midrange through to the outer limits. 'Levitations', meanwhile, causes us to do just that with janky breaks and electronic wobble boards.

  1. Comet (Donald's House 3056 Re-rub) (6:04)
  2. Comet (Fabrizio Mammarella remix) (6:28)
  3. Comet (feat STL-P - Romain FX Cosmic Wave remix) (6:41)
  4. Comet (Jonny Rock Micky The Meteor remix) (4:54)
Review: Nice to see legendary Australian dance outfit Boxcar receiving some renewed interest. The staples of the Sydney-based Volition Records were responsible for their fair share of dance hits throughout the '80s and '90s, one of their biggest being 1994's 'What Are You So Happy About?'. 'Comet' is taken from the 1990 LP Vertigo on seminal Canadian imprint Nettwerk. The original Robert Racic produced version came with a remix by Arthur Baker on the flip, while this version features re-rubs by (among others) Slow Motion co-head Fabrizio Mammarella taking the track into neon-lit Italo chug territory, while the ever reliable Jonny Rock delivers a trippy deep disco dub.

Transient London 001
  1. Daniel Broesecke - "Grind" (8:15)
  2. Vern - "Portal" (7:15)
  3. VLF - "Active Remote" (8:15)
  4. Josh Wicks - "Time Trip" (7:17)
Review: Hello to brand new London based tech house label Transient. It kicks off with a showcase of its label talent in the form of this various artists four-tracker. Daniel Broesecke opens up with a nice and heady, roomy tech cut with cosmic synths and swirling pads taking you up amongst the stars. Vern then offers 'Portal' which is squelchy electronic funk with rubbery bass and bendy synth tones.
VLF's 'Active Remote' is a deeper cut with a sleek and hypnotic drum line and frosty little synth details. Josh Wicks closed down with what might be the EP highlight, 'Time Trip.'

  1. Steps To Klapa (7:36)
  2. We Got The Swing (7:41)
  3. Spalladium (8:00)
  4. Horns (5:24)
Review: Since debuting in 2016 Gaetano Caruan has only put out a handful of releases. While these EPs showed promise, there was always a feeling that the producer may be capable of hitting higher heights musically. Diaframma, Caruan's first outing on the mighty Perlon label, delivers on that early promise, offering up rhythmically interesting, off-kilter workouts that blend minimal techno chops with oddball electronics and plenty of smoky jazz influences. For proof, check 'Steps to Klapa', where wonky but weighty bass, fuzzy electronic stabs and chanted vocal snippets ride a killer rhythm, and the smooth, intergalactic micro-house hustle of 'Spalladium'. Elsewhere, 'Horns' is a sumptuous chunk of heady, morning-fresh electronic jazz and 'We Got The Swing' is an oddball, bass-heavy club workout full of hazy samples, bossa-influenced beats and creepy keys.

  1. Sekater (8:08)
  2. Sekater (Audiojack remix) (5:48)
  3. Sekater (2022 Revisited) (7:14)
Review: Marseille based Rafael Cerato is known for his emotional techno sound that has been heard on top labels like Diynamic Music, Stil Vor Talent, and his very own Ritual. He's also become quite the staple on Marc Romboy's Systematic Recordings, which back in 2015 released his anthemic 'Sekater', a sublime expression in dancefloor drama which still sounds as good today. There's a 2022 Revisited version featured on here which is optimised for today's dancefloor, while the remix by Gruuv head honchos Audiojack over on the flip goes for a bouncy tech house rework.

  1. Pulse (7:42)
  2. Ripple (7:26)
  3. Quarks (7:42)
  4. Void (7:45)
Review: Cosmoz Records is "a mutant program where minimal wizards link their magic to shape the future of dance music." First up is the pairing of Constratti & Techu across four Serengetis cuts of spaced out tech. 'Pulse' slithers its way into your psyche with its supple synths and drums glistening like metal. 'Ripple' is bubbly number with subtle funk in its rhythms and 'Quarks' keeps up the stylish sound designs but this time with a more paired back and dubbed out tech vibe. Last of all is 'Void', a a more spacious cut for the afters, perhaps.

  4. That Feeling (5:36)
  5. Kyushu (5:01)
  6. Echoes Under Pass (6:05)
Review: DJ and producer Tom Burford, aka. Contours, makes his debut for Slow Life in what is now his tenth EP to date, this time racking up a further 5 cinematic, live-tinged house tracks for all to take in. The Rhythm Section signee here strips back his normally overt emotive sound for a more dubious backroad, with lead 'Distant Memories' and 'Echoes Under Pass' traversing dubbier and more subdued territories than usual for the producer. Elsewhere, 'Kysuhu' and 'Projections' ease up the mystery for harder-hitting forays into electro slappage.

Ahead Of Time EP
Cat: REFACELIMITED 010. Rel: 25 May 22
  1. Finally Found
  2. Why
  3. Morning Droids
Review: Here comes Costin Robert Popescu, Bucharest beatsmith pushing some of the sprightliest minimal tech house to emerge from the Romanian capital in recent times. Following recent drops for Pleasure Zone, Kiria and Hubble, he shores up on Re Face for the Ahead Of Time EP. Things kick off with the pinging synth flourishes and mellow demeanour of 'Finally Found' before sliding into the positively cheeky workout 'Why'. 'Morning Droids' rounds things off with the funkiest of the bunch, where the bass slinks around the drums and the melodic parts come unshackled in the right places for a surefire dancefloor bomb.

  1. Make Me (5:59)
  2. Missing Time (6:53)
Review: Two unreleased tracks by Englishman Richard Davis on his Repeat imprint. On the A side, you've got the sensual, late night mood music of "Make Me" delivered in his idiosyncratic style that's been heard on imprints such as 240 Volts, Moodmusic and Noir over the years. Over on the flip, there's the deep, afterhours-minded dub of 'Missing Time' which sounds like it could possibly be from the early noughties with its minimal sound. Also known as Dennis Kensington, the Berlin-based producer reissued some of his much sought after 12"s under the Junkie Satre alias on Repeat last year.

  4. Distant Future (5:59)
Review: Belgian producer DC Salas follows up an impressive run of releases on labels such as Live At Robert Johnson, Correspondant and River Rapid with a new one this week on Adana Twins' TAU. Time Well Spent is his first proper EP for the Hamburg-based label after a cameo appearance on their Spektrum compilation and features the high-tech dark disco adventure of 'Nothing Is Ever Lost' followed by the strobed-out and tunneling acid attack of "Distant Future' on the A side. Flip over and you've got the neon-lit title track, which receives a stellar rework by Massimilliano Pagliara who injects classic Italo motifs into it.

  3. Monodream (7:38)
  4. New Horizon (7:30)
Review: Manchester's Tranquil are but one of the city's many deep tech pushers, but unlike the rest, they aim for a version of the style that nails a sense of calm. Their latest signee Direkt fulfills all of said requirements; 'Movements', 'Still', 'Monodream' and 'New Horizon' are all low-end-scalping groovers, sure to pin down Mancunian mono systems and specialist stereo ones alike.

  3. Minube & Andrey Djackonda - "Silk" (7:14)
  4. Farid Odilbekov - "Mobile 5" (7:12)
Review: Brazil is not a label often associated with tech house but Oashi is slowly changing that. This third outing from the small but well formed label is a various artists affair that takes in everything from gritty tech to dreamier house. Direkt kicks off with 'Omnisphere' which is dubbed out and laced up with frazzled synths and Heek & Kike Mayor P's 'Sarandea' is a gentle and subversive goove with dreamy pads and lush samples. The flip side sinks into a smooth groover from Minube & Andrey Djackonda in the form of 'Silk' while Farid Odilbekov closes down with 'Mobile 5,' a nice leggy house workout.

Knock Knock Remixes
Cat: PAMPA 038. Rel: 14 Apr 22
  1. Drone Me Up, Flashy (feat Sophia Kennedy - &ME remix) (9:11)
  2. Muddy Funster (Mano Le Tough Fuzzy Munster remix) (5:38)
  3. Illumination (feat Roisin Murphy - Mano Le Tough Needs A Birra Light remix) (6:14)
Review: The wonderfully curious Pampa Records boss DJ Koze never makes anything less than idiosyncratic sounds. His 2018 long player Knock Knock proved that point and now it gets pulled apart and remixed by a bunch of fine contemporary house talents. 'Drone Me Up, Flashy' is up first and is tackled by &Me, who layers in phased bass and steps synth sequences to make for a nice trance-inducing trip. Mano Le Tough's Fuzzy Munster remix of 'Muddy Funster' is a frayed-edge tune with innocent melodies that sooth the brain. He also adds his own spin to 'Illumination' and makes it into a sunny, melodic house cut with a breezy disposition.

  1. Loren's Holiday (6:31)

  3. Heartbreaker (5:35)
  4. Fix Up Elgam (3:34)
Review: DJ Rocca is something of a musical chameleon: a producer, DJ, remixer and audio engineer whose work touches on a wide variety of dancefloor-focused sounds. Of late, he's tended to focus mostly on nu-disco and Balearic house, but on this EP he's opted for a darker, hazier and more electronic sound that draws inspiration from his tech-house productions of old. For proof, check opener 'Loren's Holiday', where oddball electronics, faintly foreboding riffs and effects-laden motifs ride a dark bassline and wonky drums, and the angular, Orbital style riffs of warehouse-ready jack-track 'Iron Exposure'. You'll find more Brown Album era Orbital style sounds on the Afro-cosmic-tinged trip that is 'Heartbreaker', while 'Fix Up Elgam' is creepy, psychedelic and mind-altering in the best possible way.

Review: Portugal's Magic Carpet returns this week with a new one by Londoner Duowe, known for his releases in collaboration with Picasso, and heading up Fraise Records. Four retro flavoured jams are featured on the Afterwork Special EP: old school house motifs combine with rave on "Oh Boy" before early '90s IDM and bleep aesthetics get referenced on the trippy "Nice N Squelchy". Over on the flip, there's more falling acid to entrance you on "Synthetic Dreams" until the deep and emotive electro beats of "Dancing With Robots" closes it out in style.
