Watergate 27 EP 1
  1. Adana Twins - "Jupiter" (Kollektiv Turmstrasse remix) (8:24)
  2. Sabb & Black Circle - "Vega" (6:29)
  3. JAMIIE & Niko Schwind - "Suwedi" (7:24)
  4. Emanuel Satie & Nanghiti - "Forever More" (4:59)
Review: Watergate welcomes back a crew of regular artists for an EP taken from the 27th instalment of its long running mix series. The Adana Twins kick off with a dark and bubbling minimal house number to set a late night mood then Sabb & Black Circle combine to great effect on the more uplifting, piano laced 'Vega', no doubt inspired by the house icon of the same name. Flip it over for 'Suwedi', a tech house track that traps you in a trance with computer melodies and last of all Emanuel Satie & Nanghiti get all spiritual and joyous with the warm house surges of 'Forever More.'

No Car Big Garage EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: HB 017. Rel: 23 Nov 20
  1. Why Does The Lion Get Lost In The Jungle?! (6:31)
  2. No Car, Big Garage (6:50)
  3. He Displays Nothing But... (9:05)
Review: Half Baked return with a serious heater from Arno, who explores all kinds of crafty twists on the garage and electro resurgences with one eye on the minimal scene. This is hardly minimal music though - 'Why Does The Lion Get Lost In The Jungle?!' rattles through pan pot percussion and twitchy breakstep rhythm formations while nagging synth lines and plenty of sub flex make for an especially naughty club wrecker. 'No Car, Big Garage' brings a little machine funk into the mix with some killer DX7 organ bass for good measure. 'He Displays Nothing But...' takes things in a more housey direction with some crisp 909 claps and a vivid, trippy backdrop of vocal samples and nimble synth lines. Classy, inventive dance music for the freaky people.

  1. Sleeze Funk (6:50)
  2. Break (6:47)
  3. Jazz Sunrise (6:44)
  4. Buddy's Groove (6:37)
Review: 2020 marks the 30th anniversary of Allen "Aubrey" Saei's first 12" release as Panic. Because of this, it seems a fitting time for the long-serving techno producer to return with his first solo single for two years. He begins by wrapping delay-laden synth stabs and tipsy chords around a heavyweight bassline and crunchy machine drums on 'Sleeze Funk', before further exploring dub-tinged alien techno pastures on the similarly impressive 'Break'. B-side opener 'Jazz Sunrise' expertly combines driving drums and insanely weighty bass with drowsy deep house chords and jazzy synth flourishes, while 'Buddy's Groove' is on off-key trip into strange (but brilliant) loop-house/deep techno fusion.

Isolation Tapes 3
Cat: GRU 114. Rel: 24 Nov 20
  1. Intimacy (feat Lady Vale) (6:40)
  2. Outta Limits (7:17)
  3. Neon City Lights (6:01)
Review: UK stalwarts Audiojack are real workhorses who have provided a myriad of club-ready weapons for DJs all across the board in recent years. Most of it has come on their own Gruuv label, which is where they return now. They open this latest missive with 'Intimacy (feat Lady Vale)', a slow building tune that awakens from a subtle, deep roller into a rather spiritual cut thanks to the fine vocals. 'Outta Limits' indeed explores the sort of deserted distant planets you'd expect from the title, while 'Neo City Lights' could well be the sound of a future disco found on one such exploration.

  1. Introspection (feat Polarbear) (5:56)

  3. Obsession (feat Eli & Fur) (7:02)
Review: More tough rolling tech house with The White Isle in mind (quarantine style, of course) on the ever reliable Gruuv imprint. Label head honchos Audiojack take over for this one, fittingly titled Isolation Tapes 1.The music takes a much different turn than expected over the EP's three tracks: from the tunnelling back room dub of 'Introspection' (feat Polarbear) to the slinky and hypnotic trance inflections of the utterly euphoric 'Stellar' on the flip, which is followed by a collaboration with ascendant London-based duo Eli & Fur on 'Obsession' that goes for an early '90s Chicago vibe in the vein of Larry heard et al.

  2. Electrob (7:04)
  3. Jardwer (6:36)
  4. Sometimes I Don't Feel (7:07)
Review: This has been an active year for Argentinian producer AWSI, with vinyl releases for Artefax Movement and Blind Vision Records, and now this fantastic new one for Campania's Purple Box. There's some seriously good vibes on the Derretido EP: from the slick, swing-fuelled bounce of the title track, followed by the loved-up rave euphoria of 'Electrob'. But it's on the B side where the rising producer really shines, as heard on the deep, late night mood music of 'Jardwer' and the introspective afterhours bounce of 'Sometimes I Don't Feel'.

  3. Night (6:10)
Review: Josh Baker and Alfie Jack were locked down in Devon for two days, and what we have here is the music they cooked up in that time. t's straight down to work on opener 'Hazard', which marries jacking Chicago drums with bubbling melodies and bulbous synth sounds. It's one for both head and heel such is the fusion of both cerebral and visceral qualities. There is a more playful sense of funk to the skipping and airy drums of 'Simplistic', which harks back to someone like Glenn Underground, while 'Night' closes with a mid-90s tech house fluidity that Terry Francis would be proud of.

The First Thing EP
Cat: BLUE 003. Rel: 21 Oct 20
  1. Different Point Of Structure (12:05)
  2. The First Thing You Hear (11:15)
Review: After the first couple of releases by label chief Remus, Rominimal hero Barac Nicolai is handed the reins for the Blue imprint's third edition. Enchanting polyrhythms are undoubtedly the order of the day across The First Thing EP, with the Bucharest-based producer's usual knack for eloquent track titles as well. On the A-side, we have 'Different Point Of Structure' which is a driving and energetic main room workout with subtle dub techno influences and utilising the hypnotic qualities of previous work, while the B-side cut 'The First Thing You Hear' is a more stripped back and minimalistic affair reaching near tribal moments, but this one is definitely more suited to heady afterhours moments.

Raw yet polished, experimental yet undeniably danceable, stripped bare yet brimming with funk, every sound on this meticulously crafted record hangs in its rightful place. An invigorating release - highly recommended.

Review: Stalwart minimalists Birdsmakingmachine continually find exciting new ground within their strict set of musical rules and always perfectly reduced groves. Now they land on Melodeum Records and take care fo the nascent labels third EP with a careful hand. 'Paxaresku' is busy and restless but always subtle and primed to draw you in, while 'Voodoo' cuts more loose on a symphony of weird sine waves and bendy pads. The closer is a dark, grubby, dirty minimal remix of 'Paxaresku from Alci with rugged bass and a curious late night vibe.

Review: Greek DJ and producer Bodj links with his pal and frequent musical sparring partner Roksi for another of their buttery smooth minimal house EPs. This outing is their first time on the fledgling OGE label and it finds them in fine fashion. 'Futurama' is the tightly woven opener, with bass plunging deep down below the frictionless house drums. 'In The Meantime' is powered by a bigger, more prominent bassline and icy hi hats that glide up top and get you in a trance, while 'Manuelle' is another dreamy late night number perfect for close knit dance floors and cosy basements. 'Robodancer' brings the Millsian melodies for a fantastic finale.

  1. Opticamente Avanzando (11:53)
  2. OP.AV (6:26)
  3. Planos De Ausencia (Casualidad mix) (3:59)
Review: After the outstanding Devious EP from the label bosses, Secretsundaze is back with a new 12" from emergent Dominican artist Boundary. Once again, there's a vitality and urgency to the tracks the label is pushing, finding in Boundary a thread of inventive techno that sounds fresh and authentic at the same time. 'Opticamente Avanzando' surges with a Detroit grittiness, ethereal pad swoops and a sizzling carnival atmosphere, stitched together in a masterful, dense mix perfect for peak time transcendence. 'OP.AV' takes things deeper, letting a cascade of synth motifs fall around a nagging, break-embellished rhythm section. 'Planas De Ausencia (Causalidad Mix)' is a striking departure into fractured ambient electronica, where the beats fall apart and slide into new grooves around blissful swathes of melancholy melody. Classy stuff, which should appeal to lovers of vintage techno as well as those craving something new.

  3. E-Search (6:39)
  4. Sling (6:09)
Review: Having made his mark via releases on some of tech-house and techno's most popular labels - Raum Musik, Cocoon and Eastenderz included - Christian Burkhardt has been awarded the honour of releasing the first music on Saturn Drive, a freshly minted imprint from Los Angeles. The headline attraction is undoubtedly Daniel Roth collaboration 'Mousewalk', a chunky slab of quirky tech-house hypnotism which combines sturdy low-end pressure with no more than a handful of eccentric musical motifs. It comes accompanied on side A by a more rolling, sub-heavy revision courtesy of Parisian producer Politics Of Dancing. The fun continues on the flip, where the wonky, bass-heavy dancefloor weirdness of 'E-Search' is followed by the darker and creepier late-night flex of 'Sling', where short, aggressive acid riffs catch the ear.

Review: Cesare Marchese aka Cesare vs Disorder is a master of minimalist techno. His faultless discography takes in plenty of labels and now he lands on Nervmusic with four more of his perfectly streamlined cuts. Opener 'Mama Wants Me Slim' is a groove that sounds cautious and unsettled so keeps you on edge, while 'Saude' is more rubbery and rugged in the bass department and tripped out up top. There is glitchy goodness on 'Defrag' for those who life hi definition sounds and 'Shy' closes with a mind warping mix of off-grid hits, bendy bass and freaky tones.

Review: Following up some great efforts by the likes of Dumitrescu and Lizz, for its eleventh edition Priku's Atipic imprint goes beyond the 'Rominimal' sphere. Instead it looks to Argentina for this release, courtesy of scene veteran Franco Cinelli in conjunction with newcomers Esteban Gutierrez and Lux Z. Hypnotic late night mood music awaits on A side cut '011.1' a deep groove with Robert Hood style synth bleeps against a backdrop of lean minimalist drum beats. On the flip, the heady stomp of '011.2' lets the clipped yet very intricate rhythm programming do all the talking - polyrhythmic afterhours bliss if we have ever heard it.

Review: It's a big week for Mannheim's 8 bit label, with a massive release from Amsterdam tech house hero Franky Rizardo and now this one - coming from label co-head Nick Curly. Prepare to be seduced by the sensual, slinky and downright hypnotic acid groove of 'Plenti' followed up on the flip by the sweltering tribal polyrhythms of 'Squib' which is sure to work up a sweat on the dancefloor - as once the clubs reopen of course! This also happens to be his first release on the label for 2020, and obviously it made sense to give him some more time as these two tracks are sure floorfillers - only waiting for the right moment to be dropped in public.

Review: Australia's DJ Life brings his high energy sounds to the Dansu Discs label and in doing so draws on plenty of different reference points from trance to 90s tech house. It's perfectly spaced out tech that kicks things off in glistening, futuristic fashion with 'White Bricks' before 'Steel' ups the ante and rolls on to infinity with some fish, far-sighted chords. 'Waverider' is no less urgent, but goes a little deeper for its thrills, and the flip side offers different versions with a Adam Pits Topsy Turvy remix of 'White Bricks' getting all jungle and retro-techno while 'Steel' (Ciel Tokyo Drifting mix) is a high speed gem.

Review: French deep house imprint Rutilance reaches its 'Twentieth' release as the name suggests, with four surefire tracks by its label chiefs. On the A side, the ever reliable DJ Steaw hands in two tributes to the sounds of yesteryear: he first captures the classic sound of the Cab Drivers on the tough rolling analogue bounce of "This Kind Of Music", followed by the funky disco loops on "Fat Sherbet". On the flip, co-head Gunnter makes a rare appearance and pushes the envelope harder with his tough rolling and dubby stomper "Wait" and closes it out with the entrancing energy of "Shhhake It" where its sonar bleeps hypnotise you against a backdrop of Todd Terry style 4/4 breakbeats.

  1. Whisper (7:09)
  2. Freak (7:08)
  3. Faze (7:08)
Review: He might not be able to play his trademark brand of swinging, UK-centric tech-house tunes to the public in clubs right now, but East End Dubz continues to serve up singles packed full of dancefloor-ready treats. His latest missive is predictably strong, particularly A-side 'Whisper'. An impressively atmospheric affair, the cut features lo-fi sounding electronic melodies rising above a chunky, hypnotizing bassline and his usual crispy, snare-heavy tech-house drums. The fun continues on the flip where 'Freak', a squelchy, acid-flecked mid-set bumper built around a limited number of teased and tweaked elements, is joined by 'Faze', which sounds like the sort of thing Sheffield sorts Swag released in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Review: At PIV Records, the imprint's founders are using their Dutch/Indonesian heritage as a cultural aspect to create a unique blended output, which is significantly visible in the artworks and merchandise of the label. The latest release as part of their limited vinyl series comes from rising Utrecht-based young gun Joren Edwards, who is hot off his debut release not long ago on Archie Hamilton's Moss Co. PIV 005 features some swing-fuelled hypnotic tech house jams such as 'Funkaholic' reminiscent of (iO) Mulen or Jack Wickham. It also receives a deep, dark and dirty rework on the flip by legend of the Parisian underground Dan Ghenacia. Alternatively, if you are looking for some quirked out microhouse, check out 'Helling' which is perfect for getting weird at the afterhours.

EEE
Cat: EEE 009. Rel: 13 Oct 20
  1. Track 1 (7:18)
Review: The EEE series may utilise a very simple blueprint - each single-sided, one-track release combines tasty, 21st century tech-house grooves with vocal lifts and instrumental samples from a classic cut - but so far, the publicity-shy producer behind it has yet to put a foot wrong. This ninth instalment in the ongoing series is every bit as alluring as its predecessors, in part because the headline-grabbing Nina Simone vocal samples are used sparingly and dropped into the mix for maximum impact. They mainly appear within the melodious, smile-inducing breakdown, before making way for a return to the track's chunky, seemingly squeezable tech-house groove and sweet, glassy-eyed lead lines. On paper it shouldn't work, but it really does, making this another must-check EEE release.

Review: Shall Not Fade is Black Loop's esteemed house label, and it recently spawned a new sister imprint Bassment Cracks, which deals in more hardcore and direct grooves. Fir this one, Ron Elliot joins the family with some seriously weight cuts. Fresh off the back of winning the AVA's Emerging Producer award, he is in top form here with 'Haarlem' a bristling cut built on old school drum breaks and glistening melodies. There is also crunchier techno and then blissed out post-rave bangers like 'Sweaty Fiver' on the a-side, and plenty more body rocking beats on the flip.

The Remixes EP
  1. Darren Emerson - "Sleeping Bag" (Ian Pooley remix) (7:15)
  2. Danny Howells - "Earthlings X" (Jimpster remix) (6:08)
  3. Dave Seaman - "Rodales" (Re You remix) (5:48)
Review: Darren Emerson, Danny Howard and Dave Seamen are all hugely influential prog house heroes who will forever be synonymous with the sound. Here some of their fie recent material gets the remix treatment on the Selador label. Berlin's Ian Pooley is first with a nice deep roller that is dreamy and will have you gazing off into the starry night sky above. Freerange boss Jimspter then goes deep as you like with his superbly stylish and subtlety spiritual take on Danny Howells's 'Earthlings X' and last of all 'Rodales' (Re You remix) is all pixelated leads and cavernous mid-tempo beats.

Doves (12")
Cat: WSDM 017. Rel: 27 Nov 20
  1. Doves (5:36)
  2. MPH (5:33)
Review: Bristol's bass bin botherer and rhythmically playful producer Facta steps up on the label he co-runs with K-Lone for two more of his superbly dialled in dance floor bombs. This ode to real life clubbing kick off with 'Doves' which pairs tripped out sound effects and tropical jungle motifs with a well swung, chunky house groove that comes backed by some serious bass. The second missive is more airy and expansive. 'MPH' blends house and 2-step to dreamy effect with nice rich synths and knocking kick drums that get you up and looking lively.

Ya Didn't Go & Do It Again Did Ya
Cat: DB 167CLEAR. Rel: 02 Oct 20
  1. Stop It (6:18)
  2. Ya Didn't (5:46)
  3. Crowd Control (5:53)
Review: Fisher first made his mark in 2017 with his Dirtybird debut, 'Ya Kidding', but it was his 2018 follow-up, Ya Didn't Go and Do It Again Did Ya, that propelled him towards tech-house superstardom. It was pressed in relatively limited quantities first time around, so Dirtybird has decided to reissue it, this time on translucent vinyl. Arguably the most celebrated of the three tracks is flipside 'Crowd Control', a devilish mix of crunchy drums, druggy bass, mind-mangling electronic riffs, twisted vocal samples and big room friendly build-and-release production. Elsewhere, 'Stop It' is a more rolling, bass-heavy affair that reminded us of mid-2000s Switch productions, and 'Ya Didn't' is a sweaty and bombastic slab of low-slung tech-house hedonism blessed with some surprisingly bluesy vocal samples.
