Wisdom (12")
Cat: MKIL 002. Rel: 20 May 20
  1. Catacombs2 (12:29)
  2. Globus (8:53)
Review: The most surprising release this week comes from Thomas Melchior's newly inaugurated My King Is Light label, presenting its sophomore release courtesy of veteran U.S. producer Amir Alexander. The Vanguard Sound main man isn't usually known for his minimal house exploits, but sure proves his talent for it here on the 'Wisdom' EP. A side "Catacombs2" treads along a ghostly trail similar to Melchior's own work, with all its deep and hypnotic elements aimed squarely at the afterhours dancefloor. On the flip, we have the lean and subtle groove of "Globus" which continues with the arcane and 'magickal' vibes; its bouncy melodic bass works your feet, while the warped/operatic vocal tones flip your mind!

  1. Aparte & Dan Blatov - "Guidance" (8:17)
  2. Aparte - "Distant Thunder" (10:26)
Review: The Atipic catalogue has certainly grown exponentially in the last couple of years, with some particularly fantastic releases coming from Rominimal scene heroes like Vincentiulian, Vlad Arapasu and Cosmijn. The latest addition comes from Bucharest-based newcomer Florin Serban aka Aparte, who label boss Priku has chosen to present a smashing debut here on "ATIPICLAB 007". Teaming up with fellow debutante Dan Blatov on the sparse and hypnotic Sunday morning vibe of "Guidance", before going solo on the flip with the moody bass-driven groove of "Distant Thunder".

  1. Arctor & Jay Hill - "Mercurial" (Silverlining remix) (9:30)
  2. Ravi McArthur - "Here & Now" (Silverlining remix) (7:08)
  3. Spook In The House - "Conspiracy" (6:14)
Review: Silverlining keeps up the pressure with his flawless series, hitting the tenth release in style with this batch of remixes he's sprinkled some metallic underground house magic over. First up is Arctor & Jay Hill's "Mercurial", which gets given a cavernous rub down, as brittle but mightily groovy percussion pirouettes around dubby inflections, whispered atmospherics and more besides. Ravi McArthur's "Here & Now" takes on a '90s tint as a killer phased lead hook and woozy pads bring the wiggle to Rizvi's limber deep house rhythm structure. "Conspiracy" by Spook In The House completes the set with a fractured ping into more experimental territory that sports a serious whiff of Stasis-esque psychedelia in its genetic make up.

  3. Distant Object (6:52)
Review: Veteran UK producer and DJ Aubrey finds himself on Brixton's Dream Diary label for his next offering. As always his brand of techno is laced with ambient lushness and superbly smooth and seductive grooves that roll deep. None more so than on opener "Abstract Chemistry" with its gently persuasive rhythms and dub-wise swagger. "The Slicer" is lighter and airier, with dancing drums and vocals all working it into a lather before "Distant Object" journeys deep into the cosmos with its hypnotic, loopy bass and glassy melodies to close out this most classy outing.

Hey Ladies (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: PUSS 20201. Rel: 21 May 20
  1. Hey Ladies (Vox) (6:15)
  2. Hey Ladies (dub) (6:14)
Review: Having recently impressed with a deliciously off-kilter - and hugely impressive - debut album on Studio Barnhus (last year's must-check "Once Upon A Passion"), Stockholm's Bella Boo dons the alternative BB alias and offers up a cheeky, acid-laden future anthem. In its original A-side form, "Hey Ladies" sees the rising star top a sweaty, all-action house beat with dreamy chords, layered R&B/soul vocals, deliciously dirty bass and waves of angular, mind-altering acid lines. It's a brilliant combination of elements all told, with Boo's smart production and on-point arrangement making it a genuine peak-time banger for underground DJs. The accompanying vocal-free Dub Mix is superb, too, with the Swede replacing sampled R&B snippets with bubbly electronic motifs and even wilder acid lines.

  4. Hotel Mzr (7:55)
  5. Ducele De Chilia (8:19)
  6. Faleza Neptun (11:38)
Review: Transylvanian minimalist Alin Crihan returns with this impressive debut full-length for Sepp & Nu Zau's UVAR imprint. From his debut five years ago on Sammy Dee's Ultrastretch, to some great releases of late on Elliptic and Playedby, the 'Autostrada Soarelui' LP demonstrates his wonderful progression as a producer. From moments of low slung esoteric groove action like on "Editura Estivala", woozy and off-kilter microhouse heard on "Eforie Sub'' or rolling and ethereal tech house that's perfect for Sunwaves as heard on "Hotel Mzr" - it's obviously a diverse affair. There is a fair share of leaner and more subtle tackle that's geared towards the afterhours as heard on "Gazeta Olimp" and the particularly avant-garde vibe of "Ducele De Chilia".

  1. Dis (8:08)
  2. LFO (7:00)
  3. Staines Groove (6:37)
Review: There are few more prolific producers in tech-house than East End Dubs. While this itself is remarkable, what's more impressive is the consistent quality of his regular vinyl missives. This three-tracker marks his first appearance on Hot Creations and offers another sign of the producer's growing profile. A-side "Dis" is a suitably celebratory and energy-packed affair, with East End Dubs utilising starry-eyed breakdowns, loved-up vocal snippets and sweaty snare-heavy builds between bouts of bass-heavy, garage-influenced tech-house grooves. Over on side B, "LFO" sees him pepper another booming, bass-heavy grooves with waves of razor-sharp electronics and mutilated motifs, while "Staines Groove" is an undulating affair built around ear-catching acid bass, snappy drums and stripped-back riffs.

  1. Opinions (8:02)
  2. Beliefs (7:43)
  3. Beliefs (Christian Burkhardt remix) (6:46)
Review: Iranian-Danish artist Nima Gorji has been consistently busy for over 20 year in the game, and he's sounding as inspired as ever on this exciting release for Melodeum. While knowing how to hold down and sustain a groove with relative ease, there's much more to opener "Opinions" than genre conventions alone. The fluttering acid arps, the subby bassline funk, the teasing analogue wobbles and wriggles, all masterfully deployed for maximum impact. "Beliefs" finds fruitful directions to explore with the minimal house framework, which Christian Burkhardt then magnifies with a driving remix that retains some of the atmospheric invention of the original.

Review: You could tell this one's from Romania just by hearing the first bar! Heerd aka Bucharest-based duo Olaru George and Stroe Ionut Flavius both head up the COTEOF imprint, and they make their bow on RORA sub label moulinet with this fresh four-tracker EP. We've got a feeling that "Evolution EP" is going to receive a lot of play this summer. After the ethereal, immersive and bass-driven groove of opener "Stalker", more hypnotism awaits on the moody and rolling drama of "Visions", while the funky B-side cut "Organic Touch'' will certainly mix in well with anything by Piktor or homeboy Sublee.

  1. Brother (6:32)
  2. Brother (Alton Miller remix) (8:47)
  3. Brother (Terrence Parker remix) (7:50)
  4. Oh Boy (7:15)
Review: Rhythm is the foundation for Berlin-based Chilean producer and DJ: Jorge C. In addition to releases on labels like DeepArtSounds, Dopeness Galore and Sean Deason's Matrix Recordings, he runs his own label Ojo de Apolo, which has been a platform to spread his own work with the participation of other producers around the globe. The Detroit connection still runs deep on his new offering, "Brother": emotive and spiritualised house music with elements of Latin percussion. We immediately thought of Alton Miller - then lo-and-behold, the Music Institute legend steps up next with a version as deep and soulful as you'd expect alongside Motor City royalty Terrence Parker whose idiosyncratic style is ever present on this uplifting house anthem to-be, packed full of euphoric chord progressions, massive stabs and swinging beats.

Cat: CS 021. Rel: 04 May 20
  1. In Somnium (8:10)
  2. Come Inside (6:52)
  3. Angel (10:33)
Review: Gavin Herlihy is a stalwart of 21st century tech house, with an impressive run of labels under his belt from Cadenza and Culprit to Crosstown Rebels and Leftroom. His Karousel alias pops up from time to time too, this time on Burnski's unrelenting Constant Sound label. "In Somnium" has a luxurious acidic rub to it thanks to the nagging monosynth bassline coursing throughout, but this rave-baiting trope is balanced out by airy pads and a sleek tech house beat. "Come Inside" is a more knotty affair, using all kinds of organic samples and a more detailed sound palette to whip up some dancefloor magic, and then "Angel" completes the set with a lighter, subtly off-kilter mood to greet the first rays of dawn.

Review: Frankfurt producers and DJs Michael Melchner (Omega Men) and Patrick K (Traffic) formerly teamed up on the KMR project with Dario Reimann, but have returned with their sophomore release as a duo here for Berlin-based Blank Slate. "Critical Mass" sounds like pitched-down jungle until that pumping and hypnotic four-to-the-floor groove comes rushing in. This is followed by the tripped-out and funky retro techno of "DUSTWUN". On the flip, the pair take you deep into the afterhours on the woozy minimal techno affair that is "Nazare Swell" and going out all guns blazing on the acid rave frenzy of "Call Me Freddy" which is reminiscent of second wave Detroit techno classics.

Review: Colin Chiddle's Art Of Dark is back with more tripped-out retro techno, following up some great releases of late by the likes of Alec Falconer, Z@P and Santiago Uribe. The 'Mind Control' EP comes from Berlin-based Matthias, who runs Superluminal and co-runs Foundation with Modex. On the A side, we have the bleepy and futuristic banger that is the title track, followed by the strobe-lit energy flash of "The New Dominion". On the flip, the party vibes continue with "Wide Open" hailing 'all aboard the Hoppetosse!', while the acid flashback of "Fatal Crusher" will surely help to get on your tunnel vision. All killer, no filler - tip!

Cat: SKINT 403LPB. Rel: 13 May 20
  1. Incapable (8:24)
  2. Incapable (Crooked Man part 3 mix) (8:22)
Review: Having done the rounds digitally for what feels like an eternity, Roisin Murphy's Crooked Man-produced anthem finally returns to vinyl (it was originally released, with no credits, on Bitter End in 2018. For the uninitiated, the A-side original mix is a near perfect fusion of memorable boogie bass, echoing deep house chords, snappy drum machine beats and clipped guitars topped up with a weary, lovelorn vocal from Murphy that's one of her most impactful and memorable to date. The flipside "Crooked Man Part 3 Mix" is a little less than a total transformation. It sees the Hathersage-based former Bleep & Bass producer place Murphy's care-worn vocal atop a sparse mixture of wonky techno electronics, weighty sub-bass and snappy machine drums.

Cassiopeia (140 gram vinyl 12" 再出版)
Cat: MYS 008. Rel: 11 May 20
  1. Cassiopeia (9:41)
  2. Cassiopeia (2019 remix) (11:18)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: The Mysticisms label serves up a valuable reissue of the very first release from Nail, the long-serving UK house veteran as prolific now as he was back in the heyday of legendary Nottingham soundsystem DiY. "Cassiopeia" originally appeared on a compilation on Warp, but now it gets a full side of vinyl over which to unfurl its arcane 90s magic. Entrancing synth cascades and stuttering sampler mantras, throbbing b-lines and jacking claps all make for a holy grail deep techno track from the good old days, and Nail has given it a 2019 remix on the flip which brings the spiritual shenanigans of the original into a different kind of meditative, house-oriented context.

Review: With some promising releases of late on Germany's Ewax and his local PIV imprint, Nilz Prunk returns with a particularly exciting release for Djebali. If you like tech house that is rolling, hypnotic and swing-fuelled, then you'll definitely dig this one. "Perception Of Groove EP" proudly wears its influences on its sleeve, such as Cab Drivers, iO (Mulen) and label boss Mehdi Djebali himself. Speaking of the latter, the man himself surfaces on the flip with a respectful remix. His version doesn't deviate too much from the original, instead giving it a deeper and more sensual late night vibe. Tip!
