Trident Vol 3
Cat: RUM 08. Rel: 13 Jan 21
  1. Dubfound - "PDLK" (10:08)
  2. Amin Ravelle - "Ladarto" (8:11)
  3. Dorothy's Dream - "C'Hai Creduto Eh?" (7:31)
Review: Berlin-based imprint Rumenigge return with more abstract and ominous expressions in minimal techno on this various artists EP. On side A we have Dubfound, a Moldova based producer and DJ who heads up the labels Swoon, Nurum and Zimotik. His contribution on Trident Vol. 3 is 'PDLK', a deep and woozy number on the tribal side, which is perfect for getting weird at the afterhours. Even more Sunday morning styled tackle awaits you on side B, with the very disorienting groove paranoia of Amin Ravelle's 'Ladarto' where the Barcelona-based producer serves up something you would expect to hear during one of Rhadoo's infamous Monday morning sets at Hoppetosse. Closing it out is Dorothy's Dream with the funked up Sunwaves breaks of 'C'Hai Creduto Eh?'.

Music
Music (12" 再出版)
Cat: MPM 27. Rel: 24 Dec 20
  1. Music (6:32)
  2. Tell You No Lie (8:31)
Review: A taster for Robert Hood's second Floorplan album, this EP puts a spotlight on the radical nature of his musical transformation. On "Music", the visceral rhythms of techno minimalism are gone; in their place is a rolling, tracky groove that boasts a repetitive vocal loop and which has shades of classic Relief /Derrick Carter. "Tell You No Lie" is even more impressive. It sees Hood use a gospel vocal over a stomping, funk guitar-sampling disco house workout. There is an audibly religious dimension to "Tell You No Lie," but Hood's knack for writing a great tune means that it sounds celebratory rather than self-indulgent or preachy.

Review: After a strong 2020 on labels such as The Other Side, Pleasure Zone and Damn!, Romanian artists Guy From Downstairs serves up his debut studio album Oceanic. Every bit as deep, wavey, and full of hidden secrets, across the two 12"s we're treated to tidal wave of soaking wet grooves. Highlights include the slippery filters worming their way all over 'Low Life Low Bass', the depth plunge bass/kick hits and soft harmonic ebbs and flows of 'AMC' and the gentle rolls and pushes of the 10 minute delight that is the title track. Take a deep dive today.

  1. Track 1 (8:07)
  2. Track 2 (9:20)
Review: Italo-Bosnian outfit HAMENEC return to their own self-titled label for a second much anticipated EP. After the minimalism of the first one, this time out they turn to more dreamy 90s house fair to open up. 'Track 1' is a driving affair with lush pads and corrugated bass that carries you away into the clouds. 'Track 2' then gets more twisted, with a rubbery bassline and electro tinged beats all run through with some flashes of slippery acid. Both are high class tunes for crowds who like it stylish.

Cat: JOULE 01. Rel: 13 Jan 21
  1. Bright (6:13)
  2. Rear (8:49)
  3. Bright (Varhat remix) (9:58)
Review: Further proof of the current rude health of Paris's deep house scene arrives in the shape of another rock solid EP from prolific producer Mickael Jeanerret, AKA Janeret. The Bright E.P more than lives up to its' name, with the title track delivering a near perfect blend of bushy-eyed beats, ethereal pads, deep space riffs and fluttering, manipulated vocal samples. The EP's other original cut, "Rear", boasts similarly drifting chords, but also a tech-tinged beat pattern that's as bold and funky as they come. Rising star Varhat does a terrific job remixing "Bright", retaining Jeanerret's dub techno-inspired textures, whilst adding his own Syclops-inspired synth bassline.

  3. Groove Breakfast (4:55)
  4. In The Loft (5:53)
Review: You would expect an EP titled "Retro-Future" to do a good job in uniting sounds from dance music's past and present. Naturally, Kepler's does just that on his first Sukhumvit release, opening with a hot-to-trot workout that adds warehouse-ready, turn-of-the-90s acid bass and glassy-eyed electronic riffs to smooth and shuffling tech-house drums ("Pickled"). He continues the glassy-eyed fun on the more squelchy, vintage MK-influenced bustle of "Out of Time" and "Groove Breakfast", which sounds like it could have been recorded at any time since 1990 (for the record, it also boasts some lovely piano stabs). Arguably best of all, though, is closing cut "In The Loft", which sits somewhere between '90s Italian house and organ-rich New Jersey garage.

Review: Without wanting to spark some existential conversation about What Techno Is, Berlin minimal something duo Kollektiv Turmstrasse arguably broke the mould of their style with this 2010 masterpiece that owes as much to the likes of Ellen Allien as it does Kruder & Dorfmeister and Compost Records. Saturated in a dark, high tech soul, while it opts to shuffle, glide and whisper, rather than bang, drive and pound, it clearly sets out its stall in a live instrumentation corner of the German capital's most iconic sound.

Stunning warm moments like the lackadaisical keyboard-focused dance lounge jazz of 'Heimat', the sticky garage blues of 'Was Bleibt', or the smoky, dubby piano house of 'Deine Distanz' have not lost even half an ounce of their original magic. And those are really just the surface level big hitters. Dive in deeper and you start to realise just how beautiful and beguiling the whole thing is.

Review: Losoul is a real studio wizard. Someone who can cook up infinite feelings from a very finite set of sounds. He's rightly revered in minimal circles for his club ready 12"s and immersive full lengths and this 20th anniversary rerelease of his Belong LP on Two Dreamers is another high watermark for his discography. It finds him explore stripped back rhythms that are imbued with all manner of late night motifs. Deft pads, wonky samples, chunky house kicks and filtered loops all bring off beat charm and curious character to each and every track.

  5. MGUN - "Shadows" (6:51)
Review: After just over two years out of the game, the overlooked Detroit Vinyl Room label - a stable previously responsible for unleashing some superb deep house - has finally sprung back into action. The Collision EP is a multi-artist affair with many must-check highlights, with our picks including the drowsy, tech-tinged late night deep house hypnotism of 'Stick An Move (Cobo Mix)' by Gary Romalis, the distant, jackin'-in-space acid squelch of Jnn Apprl's 'Insecure Alien', the ultra-deep and trippy, early morning haziness of Isaac Prieto's brilliantly odd and angular 'Late Night', and the horizontal, sofa-bound instrumental hip-hop of MGUN's blazed 'Shadows'. Recommended.

Review: As part of their 15th anniversary celebrations, Sushitech has decided to reissue Mosaic Classics, a 2008 collection of late 1990s works from legendary British techno producer Steve O'Sullivan, this time on clear vinyl. If you missed out first time around, it's well worth picking up. Check first the early British tech-house-goes-dub-techno hypnotism of 'Cheques Not Accepted', before admiring the sub-heavy late-night skank of 'Touch Up' and the bongo-rich pleasantness of deep techno roller 'Breezer' (itself a collaboration with John Beer'). Also worth a listen is the chunkier and sweater - but nevertheless spacey - 'No Suzuki', which was originally released under the Blue Spirit alias, and the pumping, stargazing thump of 'Sac Magique' (as Wise Caucasian).

Review: Pulse2 is a new artist who is getting serve deserved air time from the Hund records crew, who have always been about showcasing up and coming talents. This EP is 100% quality, too: it launches you into space with the subtle cosmic house delights of 'Time Machine' and once you've entered the astral planes, 'Am 32' powers along on a supple kick drum with sci-fi pads bringing the detail. 'Gravity' is more clipped and futuristic tech house funk from the very top shelf and then a name instrumental in the revitalisation of tech house, Nekes, reworks things with a hypnotic beat and slick claps reminiscent of early Soul Capsule tackle.

Cat: AESTHETIC 12. Rel: 04 Jan 21
  1. H (7:44)
  2. I (7:09)
  3. J (6:56)
Review: Aesthetic stride into 2021 with more of that surefooted, stripped back dancefloor finery that makes them a buy-on-sight for serious minimal house heads. Relic is at the controls this time around, leading in style with the sombre keys and snappy rhythms of 'H'. On the flip, 'I' has a more airy feel to it thanks to artfully sculpted atmospheric tones that linger around the crisp and shuffling beat. 'J' calls to mind some of the dubbier micro house of the mid 00s era with its sliced up, twitchy samples and nagging groove, complementing the other two floor burners on this high grade 12" perfectly.

Review: Route-8 is a Budapest producer and this is his much anticipated debut LP. But the story is that it almost didn't happen because the original album was lost when the artist and his fellow Lobster Theremin crew had all their stuff knocked in Detroit while on tour of the US. However Route 8 began re-piecing the record back together and thankfully here it is. It's an album of causing house and techno tunes indebted to the sound of the American mid-west. Far sighted pads, deep beats, balmy ambience are all present and correct and make this a mini classic.

Review: The journey of intrigue on Secretsundaze continues unabated as they welcome Lisbon-born, London-based producer Silvestre to the label. He'd previously dropped bombs on Meda Fury, Diskotopia and Padre Himalaya, and now he's bringing an unconventional flair to the Sundaze crew in line with the ear-snagging leftfield club fare they've been tapping into of late. Cheeky samples, analogue synth wriggles and snagging breaks are all par for the course, but more crucially there's a warm and gritty flavour to all the tracks that makes them stand out from so many pristine modern mixdowns. Classy, inventive stuff from a talented producer on the rise.

Review: This is a real treat for fans of original minimal house sounds: a remastered and recut repress of the still hugely in demand first EP from Aspect Music. Opening up are the one and only Soul Capsule with 'Forever Love', a restlessly, tightly looped track that has pent up energy that really gets under your bones. The F Macmillan mix is more cut up still, with puddles of melody, late night freakiness and dry beats all taking you for a trip. Dark Boys then get more direct with the pinging kicks of 'Pluto Rising' and Softcore closes out with a classically colourful melodic house workout.

  2. Snorkeling In Dewsbury (Paolo Mosca Progressive mix) (6:50)
  3. Sometimes You Can (8:49)
  4. Hot Rod (7:20)
Review: Midge Thompson's latest single is the first we've come across whose title pays tribute to Dewsbury, a small town in West Yorkshire that once boasted one of the UK's most important bassline club nights. It's perhaps fitting then that 'Snorkelling in Dewsbury' combines Thompson's usual swinging-but-hypnotic tech-house grooves and spacey sounds with the kind of deep, heavy, warped bass that has long been a trademark of Yorkshire bassline producers. His ace original mix comes accompanied with a 'Progressive mix' from Paulo Mosca which adds layers of creepy sounds and clanging, metallic percussion to Thompson's spacey chords and deep, speaker-bothering bass. Over on the flip Thompson delivers two bonus cuts: the deep UKG-tech-house fusion of 'Sometimes You Can', and the more bumpin', New Jersey-via-Leeds thump of 'Hot Rod'.

  1. Its Over (6:02)

  3. Slow Down (6:02)
  4. Pick Up Roll On (6:15)
Review: Blazing out of the blocks with a sound fully charged for the breakbeat revival, Yosh inaugurates Vivid with this appropriately vibrant set of UK bass music belters. Taking the best elements from jungle, garage and more, lead track "It's Over" bursts forth in a cascade of rolling drums before the moody sub bass stylings of "We Rewind" takes over. Things get a little more aquatic on crafty tripper "Slow Down", and then the drums come right to the forefront of the mix on crisp and deadly EP closer "Pick Up Roll On." With impeccable production values and a liberal dose of UK rudeness, this is an essential fresh grip for anyone wanting some fresh jungle derivatives in their lives.
