  3. Forgiveness (6:34)
  4. Forgiveness (Cab Drivers remix) (6:41)
Review: After five years spent drifting between labels, James Barnsley finally found a regular home in 2015. Ever since, he's periodically released EPs on Vessel, with each successive EP being more impressive than the last. Predictably, his latest EP for the label is another winner. There are two Barnsley originals to choose from: "Time", where spacey but dubbed-out synth motifs cluster around a nagging bassline and gently pulsating peak-time tech-house groove, and the jazzy and more expansive deep house warmth of "Forgiveness". Cab Drivers turns in a delicious dub house rework of the latter, while tech-house veteran D'Julz serves up a far more driving and mind-altering take on "Time".

BELIEF 001 (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: BELIEF 001. Rel: 21 May 18
  1. Track 1 (9:33)
  2. Track 2 (8:51)
  3. Track 3 (8:40)
Review: The tech-house scene trend for "mysterious", vinyl-only EPs lacking artist or track credits shows no signs of dying down. This week's choice "unknown EP" apparently comes from Germany and is loosely titled "Belief", but that's literally all we know. The music contained within - particularly the snappy, bass-heavy, mind-altering hustle of the extended A-side track, where dreamy chords and a weighty analogue bassline slowly rise above a punchy machine groove - is actually pretty good. Elsewhere, we're also enjoying the chunky bounce of "Track 3", whose bubbly, bustling bassline comes accompanied by spacey riffs and intergalactic electronics.

Funf Viertel (green marbled vinyl 12")
Cat: OS 003. Rel: 21 May 18
  1. Funf Viertel (16:05)
  2. Down (12:50)
Review: Remarkably, this 12" marks the first release from Germany's Otherside label since 2014. It comes courtesy of two of techno's most storied producers, German studio wizard Butch and minimal legend Ricardo Villalobos. There's a pleasingly fluid and melodious feel to epic A-side "Funfviertel", with Butch and Villalobos peppering an off-kilter, stripped-back techno groove with starry chords, broken electronics and humid, kalimba style melodies. On flipside "Down", the duo opts for a far denser rhythm track, which boasts layered drum hits in Villalobos's traditional South American-influenced style. Throw in a pulsing but weighty bassline and a whole heap of stereo trickery and you have another locked-in late night delight.

Cat: RGRX 001. Rel: 21 May 18
  1. DK - "Whales On Fire" (10:29)
  2. Miller - "432OT" (8:03)
  3. Miffy - "Excuse Me" (6:59)
Review: This inaugural release from Real Gang Records' X series is notable for including the first ever solo material from Miffy and Miller, a duo best known for their collaborative releases on Draft Label, In Haus Wax and, most recently, Jack's House Records. You'll find their contributions on the flipside, with Miffy's loose, deep and swinging "Excuse Me" tickling our fancy a little more than the locked-in drug-chug of Miller's "432OT". Arguably best of all though, is extended A-side "Whales On Fire", a bumpin', heads-down, Romanian style tech-house epic from Dipp and Kevin Cook under the DK alias. With its restless electronic loops, hushed vocal samples and clandestine aural textures, it's emphatically intoxicating.

  2. Hypnotizer (Nostalgic All track) (5:42)
  3. Hypnotizer (Da Groov' Moov mix) (5:35)
Review: Portugal's Assemble Music return with more carefully curated house music - this time courtesy of Italian veteran Enrico Mantini. For those who don't know, Mantini is internationally renowned as one of the founders of the deep house sound. Making his debut in the music industry nearly three decades ago, he's since appeared on cult labels such as UMM and Smoothsounds, runs the wicked Veniceberg Records and these days is an acclaimed mastering engineer. Originally released in 1995, the Hypnotizer EP gets a worthy reissue here and it still sounds as good as it did 23 years ago, we must say. From the old school swing of the Virtual Hypnosis mix, through to the deep and sexy late night mood lighting on the Nostalgic All track - don't sleep on this highly sought after classic.

  1. Chris Geschwindner - "Modern Axis Of Evil"
  2. Chris Geschwindner - "In 2 Infinity"
  3. Henry Hyde - "No Shoes No Entry"
  4. Henry Hyde - "Reverse Me"
Review: The third release on NorthSouth Records establishes the imprint as a vessel for the buoyant sound of minimal 2 step, as Chris Geschwindner and Henry Hyde return following their appearance on the label's inaugural 12". It's a sound and tempo that slots right in with the more established threads of minimal house music out there right now, but there's an undeniable UK kink in the groove that makes these jams stand out. "Modern Axis Of Evil" is a seductive, noirish cut while "In 2 Infinity" balances twitchy rhythmic elements with mournful, lingering keys. Hyde favours a broken beat template on "No Shoes No Entry," and then "Reverse Me" wriggles down into a reduced shuffle as technical as it is meditative.

  2. The Laser (8:19)
  3. Friedman Deeback Loop Revision (Max Pask remix) (10:35)
  4. Afro Sirene (7:58)
Review: Hardway Bros is Sean Johnston - DJ, producer and one half of A Love from Outer Space with Andrew Weatherall. He's fast become a staple of James 'Fucking' Friedman's Throne Of Blood imprint with his modern take on classic house music formulas. If it 'aint broke, dont fix it we say - Johnston's winning formula is on show once again with the heads-down acid wiggle of "Friedman Deeback Loop Revision" followed by the metal dance of "The Laser" closing out the A side in neon-lit, electro fashion. On the flip, Maxime Pasquier (Sheik 'N' Beik/Kill The DJ) delivers a bleepu nu-disco rendition of the A side cut and final offering while "Afro Sirene" goes for a trippy and lo-slung Afro vibe.

  2. So Hot (SAM Reshape) (7:56)
  3. So Hot (Dubsons remix) (7:46)
  4. Hush Hush (7:06)
Review: A warm welcome back to London-based Dane Jacob Trier Hanson AKA Jacob Husley, who returns to action after a near four year hiatus. He starts in confident fashion via "So Hot", a fine fusion of lo-fi house and tech-house rich in sturdy kick-drum beats, dubbed-out synthesizer motifs, memorable vocal samples and rumbling bass. It comes accompanied by a couple of notable remixes. First, Samuel Andre Madsen provides a "Reshape" that wraps subtle Kalimba style melodies around a sparser - but no less weighty - tech-house groove, before Dubsons re-casts the track as an acid bass-propelled chunk of spacey peak-time house. Husley's ultra-deep and undulating bonus cut "Hush Hush" is also worth a spin.

  7. Dog Day Afternoon (7:46)
Review: Having made his debut on Roots For Bloom back in 2013, Michael James was made to wait for another opportunity to impress. That came last year via a trio of highly regarded releases on Constant Sound and its Constant Black offshoot. Things are clearly going well, because he's now served up his most expansive collection of tracks to date: a seven-track double-pack featuring a variety of club-ready treats. Check, for example, the low-slung, bass-heavy tech house creepiness of "Catch Me If You Can" and "Winds of Change", the gently spacey bump of "Stormy Skies" and the fluttering late night dreaminess of "Dog Day Afternoon", where stretched-out chords recline over a chunky, dub-influenced bassline.

  3. Outbreaker (6:36)
Review: Since breaking out back in 2010, Sanna La Fleur Engdahl has switched between her own label, Power Plant, and home city imprint Watergate. Here she makes her first appearance on the Berlin imprint for two years. A-side "Devil Sigh", where delay-laden, dub-wise vocal snippets ricochet around aggressive, end-of-days stabs, alien electronics and a driving rhythm track, is our pick of the bunch, though the woozier and more positive - nay, impressively glassy-eyed - title track (B2) is also rather good. Rush-inducing, shirt-removing thrills are provided by Tuff City Kids, whose piano-laden, hands-in-the-air rub of "Devil Sigh" sounds like a future anthem.

Monsieur Blue 004 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MOBLU 004. Rel: 21 May 18
  1. Track 1
  2. Track 2
  3. Track 3
Review: It's the fourth go round for Monsieur Blue, who steps back up to the plate with another three surefire jams from the slinkier side of the minimal house spectrum. "Track 1" is an exquisite trip through blue-hued keys and shuffling drums, striking a fine balance between the lounge and the dancefloor. "Track 2" takes a moodier approach, eking out mysterious chords and injecting a little juice into the low end to suit a more rugged situation, and then "Track 3" jettisons the ballast and pings off into a dubbed out sphere of house music perfectly crafted for the times you want to get lost at sea.

Review: SVN and Philip Gelberg's tracks under the PG Sounds moniker have been among our very favourites out of the ever-impressive SUED catalogue. The imprint, led by Sven (SVN) Reiger himself, has never veered away from their core sound and aesthetics; an analogue approach enwraps a particularly glitchy, improvisational, dubwise sound that has a particular tendency of sounding different upon each new listen. Their latest collaboration in the studio marks the imprint's 20th release to date, with "Track 1" showcasing their itchy sound across an endlessly pleasing acid palette. On the flip, we have a muted continuation of the previous 303 sounds with "Track 2", swamped and dubbed-out for maximum impact, followed by the more ethereal, more tropical mannerisms of "Track 3" - a SUED classic! Recommended.

Silverlining Dubs (V) (180 gram vinyl 12" 再出版)
Cat: SVD 005. Rel: 21 May 18
  1. Silverlining - "Breezin Thru" (7:24)
  2. Doodlebug - "Loose In Your Mind" (Silverlining remix) (7:03)
Review: Yet more gems from the Silverlining studio, this time turning to the much sought after "Breezin Thru" track originally released in 1998. This is a true classic from the golden era of tech house, rooted in the London scene defined by the likes of Terry Francis and the like, and yet it sounds like it could have been made yesterday. The strident, upfront beat and immersive atmospheric shimmers are pure dancefloor gold. On the flip, Andy Blake and Dave Coker's Doodlebug project gets the remix treatment, winding up as crafty electro breaks with a tilt towards the deep end of the dance.

  3. Flavio Folco - "Breakout" (7:06)
  4. Redj - "Bass Ville" (6:09)
Review: Hypnotic mini-funk deepness from the south of France, courtesy of Swap White Ltd - now onto their fifth release. Their aim is always to entrance people and make them feel lost throughout these musical processes. When listening to this various artists compilation, truer words have never been spoken! On the A side we have Sweely, who has had a great run of releases on the likes of Lobster Theremin, Distant Hawaii and Concrete - he gets into some trippy after hours shenanigans on the bleepy "Arguing Is Tiresome" that will appeal to all the Perlon and Minibar fans out there. Italian Ghini B delivers the old-school groove of "1001EA" calling to mind early Detroit techno and electro, in the same vein of what Berlin labels Libertine and Slow Life are pushing of late. On the flip, it's over to label boss Regis Thoubert with the subtle and rolling "Bass Ville" bringing those esoteric vibes - in the vein of the Romanians.

Review: More playable goodness arrives from Yoyaku's deep and dubby house offshoot, Joule Imprint, with previously unheard artist Teleruic at the controls. On the A-side you'll find two hugely attractive original productions: "Pulsalii Profunde", where tactile synth bass and melodious dream house elements cluster around a squeezable tech-house groove, and the hypnotic late night throb of "Dincolo De Oriezont", which is notable for its use of heavy analogue bass and rolling intergalactic riffs. Turn to the flipside for Samuel Andre Madsen's SAM Remix of "Pulsalii Profunde", which adds a little chunky late night bounce to an otherwise ultra deep and spacey tech-house take.

Review: Tim Green has been promising to deliver a debut album for much of his decade-long career, so it's good to see that it has finally arrived. It comes on the back of strong dancefloor-friendly singles for Get Physical, Dirtybird and, of course, Cocoon. Intriguingly, Green produced Her Future Ghost as "a film soundtrack for a film that doesn't exist", and the album is shot through with cinematic tropes (think sweeping musical movements, atmospheric compositions, a loose narrative and exploration of a variety of moods). That's not to say that he's abandoned the dancefloor completely, of course; like recent single "Echo" (which is of course included here), the majority of the tracks pepper European techno and tech-house style grooves with rising and falling synthesizer melodies, emotion-rich chords and mood-altering electronics.
