Watergate 27 EP 1
  1. Adana Twins - "Jupiter" (Kollektiv Turmstrasse remix) (8:24)
  2. Sabb & Black Circle - "Vega" (6:29)
  3. JAMIIE & Niko Schwind - "Suwedi" (7:24)
  4. Emanuel Satie & Nanghiti - "Forever More" (4:59)
Review: Watergate welcomes back a crew of regular artists for an EP taken from the 27th instalment of its long running mix series. The Adana Twins kick off with a dark and bubbling minimal house number to set a late night mood then Sabb & Black Circle combine to great effect on the more uplifting, piano laced 'Vega', no doubt inspired by the house icon of the same name. Flip it over for 'Suwedi', a tech house track that traps you in a trance with computer melodies and last of all Emanuel Satie & Nanghiti get all spiritual and joyous with the warm house surges of 'Forever More.'

No Car Big Garage EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: HB 017. Rel: 23 Nov 20
  1. Why Does The Lion Get Lost In The Jungle?! (6:31)
  2. No Car, Big Garage (6:50)
  3. He Displays Nothing But... (9:05)
Review: Half Baked return with a serious heater from Arno, who explores all kinds of crafty twists on the garage and electro resurgences with one eye on the minimal scene. This is hardly minimal music though - 'Why Does The Lion Get Lost In The Jungle?!' rattles through pan pot percussion and twitchy breakstep rhythm formations while nagging synth lines and plenty of sub flex make for an especially naughty club wrecker. 'No Car, Big Garage' brings a little machine funk into the mix with some killer DX7 organ bass for good measure. 'He Displays Nothing But...' takes things in a more housey direction with some crisp 909 claps and a vivid, trippy backdrop of vocal samples and nimble synth lines. Classy, inventive dance music for the freaky people.

  1. Intimacy (feat Lady Vale) (6:40)
  2. Outta Limits (7:17)
  3. Neon City Lights (6:01)
Review: UK stalwarts Audiojack are real workhorses who have provided a myriad of club-ready weapons for DJs all across the board in recent years. Most of it has come on their own Gruuv label, which is where they return now. They open this latest missive with 'Intimacy (feat Lady Vale)', a slow building tune that awakens from a subtle, deep roller into a rather spiritual cut thanks to the fine vocals. 'Outta Limits' indeed explores the sort of deserted distant planets you'd expect from the title, while 'Neo City Lights' could well be the sound of a future disco found on one such exploration.

Review: Roebrt Babicz has always excelled at doing something not so many dance music producers are any good at: making albums. Utopia is his eight such full length. It comes on on Marc Romboy's Systematic Recordings and is another record of unity, flow and cohesion. It is a work, we are told, that draws on his own personal experiences and forms a life soundtrack to epitomise moments of both elation and hardship. Each track offers a world of soul to explore, with intricate percussion, rhythms and harmonies to get lost in and expertly designed snares and kicks all making it a lush sounding work.

  2. Mousewalk (with Daniel Roth - Politics Of Dancing remix) (6:34)
  3. E-Search (6:39)
  4. Sling (6:09)
Review: Having made his mark via releases on some of tech-house and techno's most popular labels - Raum Musik, Cocoon and Eastenderz included - Christian Burkhardt has been awarded the honour of releasing the first music on Saturn Drive, a freshly minted imprint from Los Angeles. The headline attraction is undoubtedly Daniel Roth collaboration 'Mousewalk', a chunky slab of quirky tech-house hypnotism which combines sturdy low-end pressure with no more than a handful of eccentric musical motifs. It comes accompanied on side A by a more rolling, sub-heavy revision courtesy of Parisian producer Politics Of Dancing. The fun continues on the flip, where the wonky, bass-heavy dancefloor weirdness of 'E-Search' is followed by the darker and creepier late-night flex of 'Sling', where short, aggressive acid riffs catch the ear.

  20. Expect Nothing (3:11)
  21. Camelphat vs Cristoph - "Breathe" (feat Jem Cooke) (6:15)
Review: Given that they started their ascent to EDM superstardom over a decade ago and have already released a string of genuine crossover anthems, this debut album from Camelphat is undeniably overdue. So, was it worth waiting for? If you like their brand of festival-friendly dance music hedonism, then you will genuinely love it. The assembled 21 tracks scattered across three action-packed slabs of wax draw influence from many interconnected styles - mostly electro-house, tech-house and techno, but also indie-dance, synth-pop, nu-disco and more bass-heavy flavours - and repackage them as distinctively Camelphat style productions, complete with contributions from numerous collaborators and guest vocalists (Noel Gallagher, Skream, Jake Bugg, Yannis Foals, Jem Cooke and Christoph all feature).

  2. Saude (6:02)
  3. Defrag (6:22)
  4. Shy (5:31)
Review: Cesare Marchese aka Cesare vs Disorder is a master of minimalist techno. His faultless discography takes in plenty of labels and now he lands on Nervmusic with four more of his perfectly streamlined cuts. Opener 'Mama Wants Me Slim' is a groove that sounds cautious and unsettled so keeps you on edge, while 'Saude' is more rubbery and rugged in the bass department and tripped out up top. There is glitchy goodness on 'Defrag' for those who life hi definition sounds and 'Shy' closes with a mind warping mix of off-grid hits, bendy bass and freaky tones.

  1. Dub Chronicles #3 (8:02)
  2. Cornerstone (6:00)
  3. Ancient Tribal Drums (7:06)
  4. It's A Groove (8:00)
Review: Sascha Dive has been one of Germany's most deep producers for many years. His smoky, dubby sound is perfect for the more heady clubs, cosy backrooms and intimate crowds out there. Even without club being open, this new one works thanks to its contemplative depths. 'Dub Chronicles #3' is a low slung roller that cannot fail to hypnotise. 'Cornerstone' is more airy and outward looking thanks to the lighter chords, but 'Ancient Tribal Drums' then nails you to the floor once more with some real heavy grooviness. Last of all, 'It's A Groove' sends you home on a sweet one.

  4. White Bricks (Adam Pits Topsy Turvy mix) (4:41)
  5. Steel (Ciel Tokyo Drifting mix) (6:16)
Review: Australia's DJ Life brings his high energy sounds to the Dansu Discs label and in doing so draws on plenty of different reference points from trance to 90s tech house. It's perfectly spaced out tech that kicks things off in glistening, futuristic fashion with 'White Bricks' before 'Steel' ups the ante and rolls on to infinity with some fish, far-sighted chords. 'Waverider' is no less urgent, but goes a little deeper for its thrills, and the flip side offers different versions with a Adam Pits Topsy Turvy remix of 'White Bricks' getting all jungle and retro-techno while 'Steel' (Ciel Tokyo Drifting mix) is a high speed gem.

  4. Gunnter - "Shhhake It" (6:11)
Review: French deep house imprint Rutilance reaches its 'Twentieth' release as the name suggests, with four surefire tracks by its label chiefs. On the A side, the ever reliable DJ Steaw hands in two tributes to the sounds of yesteryear: he first captures the classic sound of the Cab Drivers on the tough rolling analogue bounce of "This Kind Of Music", followed by the funky disco loops on "Fat Sherbet". On the flip, co-head Gunnter makes a rare appearance and pushes the envelope harder with his tough rolling and dubby stomper "Wait" and closes it out with the entrancing energy of "Shhhake It" where its sonar bleeps hypnotise you against a backdrop of Todd Terry style 4/4 breakbeats.

  3. Dave Seaman - "Rodales" (Re You remix) (5:48)
Review: Darren Emerson, Danny Howard and Dave Seamen are all hugely influential prog house heroes who will forever be synonymous with the sound. Here some of their fie recent material gets the remix treatment on the Selador label. Berlin's Ian Pooley is first with a nice deep roller that is dreamy and will have you gazing off into the starry night sky above. Freerange boss Jimspter then goes deep as you like with his superbly stylish and subtlety spiritual take on Danny Howells's 'Earthlings X' and last of all 'Rodales' (Re You remix) is all pixelated leads and cavernous mid-tempo beats.

This ode to real life clubbing kick off with 'Doves' which pairs tripped out sound effects and tropical jungle motifs with a well swung, chunky house groove that comes backed by some serious bass. The second missive is more airy and expansive. 'MPH' blends house and 2-step to dreamy effect with nice rich synths and knocking kick drums that get you up and looking lively.

Review: The Kapture label out of Romania have waited nearly 18 months to follow up their debut release from Mihai Pol. That one sold out in a flash so fans have be more than eager for further minimal goodness and Haokah comes through. His sinewy sound is propelled by rubbery drums that leave the rasping synths, weird vocals and razor sharp hi hats to take centre stage opener 'Divine Link'. The Arapu is more smooth and serene for those zoned out late night sessions and a couple of more wonky and unhinged numbers on the flip make this a perfectly versatile affair.

Review: Burnski's Instinct project continues to gather steam with the release of a second album following last year's Still Life, which established the Leeds tech house veteran as a serious player in the new wave of UK garage. The ideas come thick and fast on Point Of View, flowing from the aqueous 2-step funk of 'Pistolwhip' to the 4x4 uplift of 'Sunstream', but the strongest moments come when the sound design collides with formidable bassweight on the likes of 'Select'. This is primarily a collection of club tackle, but it's packed with enough shade and depth to reach beyond the dance for all those other moments when you need a little shuffle in your life.

Review: Ki Mi is one of Russia's most famous exports and this EP shows why: he has a nice futuristic techno sound that is well partnered with collaborator JNJS on first cut 'Invasion'. It sets the EP out on a nice far-sighted journey through space then Sebbe remixes 'St Terrace' into a nice slick house bumper with a compelling groove. Superlounge then offers up a version of STM that would fit well into a set by a tech house great like Craig Richards. 'Lastochka' (Ilya Schulz remix) cloys out with the most spacey vibe and heady pad work of the lot. It's an atmospheric masterpiece.

Review: Arcane and esoteric 'Rominimal' flavours offered up once again on Bucharest's Kontour, this time by emerging artist Vlad Leanca who follows up promising efforts on Hashplant and Alter Hour. Get a load of KNTNT 003: featuring the exotic hypnotism of 'Zboina Zare' that's reminiscent of Zefzeed or local hero Nu Zau's early work, or the knackered after hours paranoia of 'Rockability' and its rather apt vocal sample along the lines of 'things go bump in the night.. I'd like to keep it that way'. On the flip, we have an extended DJ tool in the form of 'Umbral Marelui Falnic' and it's lean, boompty, weirdo groove, taking you deeper into a Sunday afternoon sleep deprived trance.

Review: This year marks the 30th anniversary of the much mythologised Marine Boy EP that landed in 1990. It perfectly captures the sounds of the time - dreamscape synths, far-sighted techno and subtle rushes of euphoria. Both 'Laura Laura' and 'La Monde Marine' have been remastered from the original DAT recordings, and added for extra good measure are some previously unreleased Marine Boy tunes from 1990 to 1992. 'This City (PX edit)' is a super punchy affair with aching female coos, while 'Laura Laura' has a perfect old school bassline. These are decidedly old school tunes but will fit right into any eclectic set if done well.

Studio 42 EP
Cat: HPF 015. Rel: 17 Nov 20
  1. Swimming In Sound (6:24)
  2. Say When (7:04)
  3. Word On The Street (6:53)
Review: The House Puff label started out as a vehicle for founder DJ Steaw's on-point productions, but in recent times he's used it more to showcase the work of other like-minded artists. On this EP, he introduces us to a new member of the extended family: Manhattan-based debutant Coral O'Connor. The New Yorker sets out his stall successfully via A-side 'Swimming in Sound', an undeniably funky tech-house roller rich in spacey synth sounds, swinging beats, oddball vocal samples and undulating bass. 'Say When' sees him move further towards a slicker, smoother, tech-tinged deep house sound, while closing cut 'Word on the Street' is an expertly crafted exploration of the deep and melodious end of the contemporary tech-house spectrum.

Three Trax (reissue)
Cat: RSO 01. Rel: 26 Nov 20
  1. Off Message (8:38)
  2. Night Nurse (7:20)
  3. Porcupine Groove (7:27)
Review: Throughout his lengthy career, Steve O'Sullivan has proved adept at delivering "proper techno" tracks that are a cut above those of his contemporaries. This re-issued three-tracker for Rawax shows him doing just. A-side 'Off Message' sets the tone, with O'Sullivan layering deep space chords and gentle intergalactic melodies atop a tough-but-rubbery beat. The sweatier and sleazier 'Night Nurse' boasts fizzing, fill-happy drum machine percussion and deep space chords that recall the early years of Detroit techno, while 'Porcupine Grove' is a snappy, pitched-up romp rich in crunchy TR-909 beats, faintly foreboding background chords and tight melodic loops.

Generation EP
Generation EP (hand-stamped 12" 再出版)
Cat: CNT 002. Rel: 20 Nov 20
  1. Hold Up (6:23)
  2. Generation (6:02)
  3. Space Mind (6:45)
  4. Looking For New World (6:37)
Review: Chat Noir Tools is back with this second release by Parisian upstart Occibel, which showcases four uncompromising tracks designed for the dancefloor. On the Generation EP, there is a mix of house, tech and breakbeat inspirations that the label quite boldly claim is 'part of this generation that frees itself from genres to better appropriate them.' With that in mind, the hypnotic and bass-driven bounce of "Hold Up" takes the best part of classic UK tech house and modern eastern European influence, while the title track takes in the ravey and retro influence of current Berlin post-minimal sounds, as do the Yorkshire bleep aesthetics on B side cut "Space Mind".

Public Holidays
Cat: PAGER 011. Rel: 23 Nov 20
  1. Render (8:03)
  2. Keine Worries In Den Hollies (6:56)
  3. Outfits4 (7:38)
  4. Luc Luc Coconut (7:31)
Review: Phil Evans and Markus Sommer's Pager label does a fine job of reimagining playful and curious old school techno through a modern lens. The 12"s are often sold out in quick time and this time they look to the talents of Porco Rosso, who doesn't release often, but makes quality moves when he does. 'Render' is a wonky, fun filled tune awash with natty melodies. 'Keine Worries In Den Hollies' dials back a little, but still excels at harmonic hits and neon synths. 'Outfits4' offers amore thoughtful house vibe that is gentle and comforting before the crisp 90s tech of 'Luc Luc Coconut' layers up farting bass and snappy stars to seductive effect.

Pretty Bouncy 001
  1. Miguel Puente - "Track 1" (6:42)
  2. Agus Ferreyra & Trentz - "Track 2" (6:40)
  3. Prodot - "Track 3" (7:01)
  4. Ale Castro - "Track 4" (6:42)
Review: Berlin's Ale Castro is back with Pretty Bouncy: a new sub-label of his established Love & Loops Records. In this new adventure, Castro and his cohorts are focused on something they describe as 'micro-bumping-groovy-housy-music' - and that sounds fairly on-point really. Up first on the first side of Pretty Bouncy 001 is Mexico's Miguel Puente with some lean and subtle tackle for the late night, followed by Agus Ferreyra & Trentz with some deep and sensual afterhours business - as per usual. On the flip, Argentinian Prodot serves up some off-kilter boompty boomp that's real smooth, and closing it out is boss man Castro with some proper mid noughties minimal vibes - nice!
