Review: The extensive reissue campaign for Japanese pop icon Hikaru Utada continues apace with the repress of their second album, 2001's Distance. Utada notched up the biggest selling record in Japanese history with their debut First Love, so there was already a huge anticipation for their follow-up, and they didn't disappoint. It sold 3 million copies in the first week of release alone. Utada worked with American producers on this record, including RnB maestro Rodney Jerkins (of Toni Braxton fame) and the unstoppable force of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, surely two of the most important producers in RnB from that time. The results are as high-end as you would expect, and finally after more than 20 years Distance is back on vinyl.

Review: Straight from the renegade minds of Italy's DUB (District Underground Bastards) - whose parties deal exclusively in untrodden, alternative locations not normally inhabited by DJs and crowds - comes 'Bersekr', the newest collab cut from Vadim Oslov and Denis Andreev. Together, the dark, minimal techno powerhouse deliver two back-to-back cuts of only the purest cleanliness and snap. 'Toltec Snippet' and 'Alexandra Snippet' expose themselves minimally but confidently, as Minilogue jerks and dub echoes unfurl across as dancefloor-taming 6 minutes.

Review: After a hot reissuing run of some of her classic albums, Hikaru Itada responds to fresh demand with a brand new album, revelling in a new stripped-back, domestic house and pop sound melded with bubblegum. Her first album in 4 years, this one unabashedly heads in a PC Music / hyperpop direction. Beyond the bouncing, rubbery sonic clouds that make up 'Pink Blood' and 'I'm Crazy About You', there are unprecedented collabs with Skrillex ('Face My Fears') and A.G. Cook (on the remix of the same track), proving she's not shy from nu-school hyperworks of her fear-facing, lovesick originals.

Review: Originally released in 2016, Fantome was the ninth studio album by Hikaru Utada, one of the biggest selling Japanese artists of all time. The album came after Utada had announced a hiatus from releasing and recording in 2010, although she continued writing in private with her father and long-term collaborator Miyake Akira. The album strikes a more sombre, personal tone as Utada grappled with the death of her mother, her second marriage and the birth of her son, and the music took a more stripped down approach, with acoustic sounds featuring prominently alongside her more typical strains of RnB and pop. Continuing an extensive reissue campaign of Utada's work by Universal, this is the first time Fantome has been available on vinyl, and given the size and devotion of her fanbase, it's sure not to hang around for long.

Review: Hikaru Utada is one of Japan's biggest stars, regularly selling records by the millions since they began their career in the late 90s. Their third album Deep River became one of Japan's top-selling records of all time after its release in 2002, helped no end by the success of singles 'Hikari' 'Travelling' and 'Sakura Drops'. Not only the singer, Utada also wrote and produced much of the album, drawing on a sleek pop-folk sound which is now synonymous with modern J-pop. It's been nearly 20 years since the album was available on vinyl, so this repress is long overdue, not to mention hotly anticipated by Utada's fans worldwide.

Review: Japanese singer-songwriter Hikaru Itada is having her entire discography rerubbed, following the release of the deluxe edition of 'Bad' last month. 'Ultra Blue' is her fourth, from 2006, and continues the J-pop balladry of her previous LP 'Deep Blue', albeit with a comparatively bright-eyed and optimistic bent. Twin Peaks style strings and galloping drums open the title track, as we're propelled into Utada's own realm of stardom. It sold almos four million digital single tracks in its year of release, and was prominent for its' tracks individual releases as ringtones.

Review: It's no mean feat to score the best-selling album in Japanese music history, but Hikaru Utada achieved just that with their 1999 debut album First Love. Of course such a huge album isn't always a shoe-in for the vinyl market, but it's still surprising to think it hasn't had a pressing since its original release, so this reissue is well overdue. Utada's style moves from a swooning, ballad-driven pop on the title track to an RnB funk on 'Automatic' with lyrics that glide between Japanese and English, undoubtedly capturing the sound of the era and harking back to a simpler time with songs bedded in the hearts and minds of millions.
