On Broken Glass (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ERC 073. Rel: 14 Oct 19
  1. I Can't Crack (Broken mix) (6:28)
  2. Throw Away The Script (instrumental mix) (5:20)
  3. Dancing The Hard Bargain (extended mix) (6:29)
  4. Bullet (Unreleased Mix) (9:08)
Review: Emotional Rescue return to the music of cult British group Furniture, shining a light on this unique band's extended 12" mixes and alternate takes. In the 80s tradition, these versions shrug off commercial concerns for something more exciting - long run times and space to tease FX and processes that a radio-friendly single wouldn't allow. "I Can't Crack (Broken Mix)" is an epic crescendo, while the instrumental mix of "Throw Away The Script" locks into a scratchy percussive workout anchored by a moody bassline. The sprightly piano lines and cascading sax on "Dancing The Hard Bargain" are a delight to lose yourself in, while "Bullet" strikes a somber but stirring tone to close the EP out.

Melody (remastered) (limited 12")
Cat: BST X068. Rel: 07 Oct 19
  1. Melody (7:14)
  2. Melody (dub) (6:43)
  3. Stop Fantasy (7:07)
Review: Hold tight for another dose of seriously sassy Italo brilliance lovingly reissued on Best. This time it's Plustwo and their outrageously fun "Melody" getting the treatment, with the A side given over to the catchy vocal version and the previously unreleased dub version. "Stop Fantasy" on the flip is another sugar-coated trip through poppy dancefloor perfection, with some cheeky acidic undertones for those listening with the right ears. You'll recognize this one as a crossover hit that's snuck up in deep digging sets - now you can get your mitts on it too.

Review: Devonte Hynes has long been one of independent music's most unique artists: a multi-instrumentalist, producer and vocalist whose music brilliantly joins the dots between '80s soul, '90s R&B, guitar-based dream-pop, hip-hop, new jack swing and psychedelia. To date, he's not released a duff album, and "Angel Pulse" - his fifth studio set - is another winner. Interestingly, it's said to be a "prequel" to last year's "Negro Swan" and is structured like a hip-hop mix-tape, with tracks segueing into each other and a superbly soulful flow. Its 14 tracks are as evocative and emotion-rich as you'd expect, with an impressive roll call of guest vocalists and MCs swinging by to add their own distinctive twist to Hynes' impeccable backing tracks.

  14. Today (1:20)
Review: Dev Hynes is the British producer, singer and songwriter who has a disarming sound that mixes r&b, soul and 80s pop. His latest album is another tender and vulnerable affair with drum lead minimalism on tracks like "Baby Florence (Figure)", US hip hop on "Gold Teeth" and the pop tinged "Benzo." It is a joyous listen that recalls the classic homemade mixtape vibes of the 90s, where moods chop and change but are united by a certain joyfulness. Angel's Pulse is a simmering soundtrack to a lovestruck day in the park or a romantic sunset but one that has political undertones when you listen closely enough.

  14. Echo 4 (1:29)
Review: Kiev House go straight for the uplifting, heart-melting tip with this album release from label lynchpin Cape Cod. Richard Farrell brings a swooning sentimentality to "Sunsay", while YMTK drops some RnB vocal flex over the insanely catchy "Good Company Girl". There's space for all kinds of production on this varied album from footwork beats and rave-tinged breaks, but the overarching theme is one of crossover maximalism - brilliantly produced vocal tracks that by right should be bothering the charts the world over. Get the inside track on some next level crowd pleasers from Eastern Europe.

  17. Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl) (12" version) (4:59)
Review: Early 80s new Wave pop outfit Haircut One Hundred are best known for their big single "Love Plus One" but this album proves they were more than one trick ponies. Infusing their pop, rock and synth sound with Conga, woodwind and Brazilian percussion leads to superbly colourful tracks that brim with sunshine. There's an upbeat and youthful innocence to "Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl)" that is utterly infectious, while busier post punk funk like "Love Plus One" will get you on your toes even after all these years, and "Kingsize (You're My Little Steam Whistle)" gets all sexy with its lead sax and clattering steel drum tumbles.

Review: Irish troubadour Dermot Kennedy is a post Ed Sheeran singer songwriter who wears his emotions on his sleeve. What separates him from the rest of his many peers is the fact he brings elements of electronica and hip hop to his music and as a result has already clocked up more than 300 million streams. His debut album addresses plenty of personal, meaningful issues that take in plenty of huge choruses and polished beats from Mike Dean, the man responsible for some of Kanye West and Jay Z's work. There will be plenty of comforts found in this album for lovers of heartfelt sounds and lung-emptying sing alongs.

Review: Three months after rapper turned singer Lizzo's major label debut first appeared on CD and digital download, Atlantic has decided to offer up a deluxe vinyl edition of the well-received set featuring three bonus tracks. Prior to release, Lizzo admitted she wanted to become "this generation's Aretha Franklin"; while she's not at the late soul legend's standard just yet, there's enough on "Cuz I Love You" to suggest that she's going in the right direction. Her vocals are variously confident, powerful, strutting and tender, with the accompanying backing tracks mixing hip-hop and R&B style beats with raucous guitars, bombastic basslines, Daft Punk style synth stabs (think "Robot Rock" and "Technologic") and occasional nods towards more pastoral, semi-acoustic sounds. Above all, though, the album is funky, forthright and hugely entertaining.
