Originally released in 1983, Sleep In Safety, not only served as the debut full-length from Los Angeles deathrock inflected horror-punks, 45 Grave, but has become synonymous with ushering in the first true era of American gothic rock. Predating even the likes of the, admittedly, more successful Christian Death, the intriguing blend of horror-centric lyrics, biting punk stylings and outlier image compared to the burgeoning hardcore scene brimming in tandem, would chart a course that simultaneously operated within and beyond the confines of the traditional scenes, with the aesthetic even leaving punk behind in later incarnations. Make no mistake, however, it all started here with Dinah Cancer (the sole founding member) and 45 Grave.
