Devonte Hynes has long been one of independent music's most unique artists: a multi-instrumentalist, producer and vocalist whose music brilliantly joins the dots between '80s soul, '90s R&B, guitar-based dream-pop, hip-hop, new jack swing and psychedelia. To date, he's not released a duff album, and "Angel Pulse" - his fifth studio set - is another winner. Interestingly, it's said to be a "prequel" to last year's "Negro Swan" and is structured like a hip-hop mix-tape, with tracks segueing into each other and a superbly soulful flow. Its 14 tracks are as evocative and emotion-rich as you'd expect, with an impressive roll call of guest vocalists and MCs swinging by to add their own distinctive twist to Hynes' impeccable backing tracks.
