Bud Powell has long been regarded as one of jazz's most influential pianists, with his 1953 residency at New York's Birdland club - a stint that came after 18 months spent in mental institutions following a number of nervous breakdowns - the stuff of legend. This three-disc collection gathers together the rare recordings of those sessions, and features the virtuoso pianist being joined by an impressive cast list of sidemen including Charlie Mingus, Oscar Pettiford, Roy Haynes, Art Taylor, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Producer Michael D Anderson has done a terrific job of re-mastering the scratchy, fuzzy original recordings, while the extensive sleeve notes tell the full, remarkable story of Powell's tortured brilliance.
