Machine Records is the new label from the brains behind the killer Moton operation and has been set up as a platform to release new material from a small group of established artists. Man like Cottam helms the debut transmission and you always know you are in good hands when the unassuming Lancastrian is behind the buttons. A two track 12" in the mould of all good, self respecting records for club play, Harsh Side Effects finds Cottam in unrelenting form with the title track deftly unfolding into a punishing, raw, crunch laden acid techno monster which was broadcasted in Daniel Avery's recent Essential Mix. Complementing this, "Awakenings" steers a pretty narrow path rhythmically with Cottam focusing on some deft atmospheric touches before a gloriously muddy kick drum comes in and takes shit over.
