Cult 48 has been methodically unfurling a staggeringly impressive catalogue over the past year or two, with a spread of self-released CDrs subsequently released by Furthur Electronix who clearly know good electro when they hear it. To be honest this music borders more on Skam Records-esque electronica, taking machine funk into experimental territory without losing sight of the inspirational source material. On Underground Signals From An Unknown Place, you can hear the ghost of Boards Of Canada on 'Orange Moss 89' and earliest Autechre twitching through 'Nothing Is Lost Now', but those are obvious reference points and shouldn't detract from Cult 48's own overall artistic stamp. With plenty of variety across the release and an unrelenting high watermark for quality, this is essential listening for any lover of crunchy, leftfield electro.
