DJ Cam (real name Laurent Daumail) may not get the plaudits he once did (during the 1990s, he was a key figure on the international trip-hop scene), but the music he's making right now is every bit as alluring as his more celebrated early works. Tropical Gypsy, his latest album, was composed and recorded in two sweltering, humid locations: Tulum, Mexico and Paros, Greece. As a result, it's a lazy, sun-soaked affair, with Daumail adding all manner of glassy-eyed instrumentation (sampled jazz horns, rap vocal snippets, tactile electric piano refrains, acoustic guitars etc.) and sublime samples to an expanded range of rhythms and grooves. Yes, there's plenty of head-nodding trip-hop beats, but also crunk rhythms, pitched-down dancehall drums, warming deep house grooves and slow-motion electrofunk percussion.
