It would be fair to say that Gong Gong Gong is a unique proposition. A guitar-and-bass duo who sing in Cantonese, make one hell of a racket and incorporate a wide palette of influences (garage rock, psychedelia, punk, drone, blues, electronic music etc), the pair began their ascent through Beijing's growing musical underground by playing in underpasses and skuzzy DIY gig venues four years ago. "Phantom Rhythm" is their debut album and is well worth a listen. Their music is surprisingly rhythmic given the lack of drums or other percussion, with the pair creating raw, hypnotic, fuzzy and energetic grooves out of the simplest of set-ups. It feels like an important album, too; we have a feeling that we're going to hear more from Gong Gong Gong in the years ahead.
