Knekelhuis have unearthed a fascinating curio in the work of iconic LA artist Jimmy Smack. He released a few records between 1982 and 1983 and got credited with pioneering a genre called death rock, wielding amplified bagpipe tones over brittle rhythm box with a post punk resourcefulness and using the resulting concoction as a vehicle for his snarling, hard-bitten poetry. It's totally raw and undeniably brilliant, the force of Smack's personality pumping through the veins of the music. In the spirit of a faithful reissue, this classily executed release comes with archival photos, liner notes by Cooper Bowman and excerpts from an interview Juan Mendez (aka Silent Servant) conducted with Smack.
