Some critics have described Mac Demarco as self-indulgent, which may or may not be missing the point, depending on whether the term is meant in a positive, artsy way or in terms of negative, narcissistic tendencies. The rapscallion or tongue-in-cheek indie certainly turns heads when he drops new work, combining an astute understanding of how to right immediately pleasing songs and viciously wry words, and last year's 'Here Comes The Cowboy' was a case in point.
12 months on we're given the demos, and this collection could have easily been the release-proper if Demarco had wanted it that way. 'Skyless Moon''s mournful, late-night piano moods, 'Baby Bye Bye' and its head nodding acoustic rhythms, the slapped grooves of 'The Cattleman's Prayer' and the smooth e-funk of 'Nobody' are as amusing as they are fine-tuned and expertly crafted.
