It's some 18 years since Scottish post-rock adventurers Mogwai released their debut single, the impressive double A-side "Turner"/"Lover". In many ways, it's heartening to see that they're still going strong, delivering more fuzzy, intoxicating concoctions. Rave Tapes is their eleventh studio album, and offers a spiraling blend of shoegaze-inspired post-rock moodscapes, skuzzy analogue-clad songs (see the inspired "Replenish") and vaguely cinematic instrumentals (unsurprisingly, given their previous soundtrack work), with a few more intense, rockier numbers thrown in (the grandiose, wall-of-sound "Blues Hour" and "Master Card" standing out). By now, we should all know what to expect; happily, Mogwai always deliver.
