Finnish psychedelic black metal maestros, Oranssi Pazuzu, are in a league of their own, and have been for quite some time. While 2020's fifth full-length, 'Mestarin kynsi', served as the point of entry for many, the preceding 'Varahtelija', arguably paints a darker, yet insightful glimmer into their twisted maelstrom. With authentic 70's fuzz, walls of tremolo picking and blast beating cacophony, as well as monolithic song-lengths that brush close to 20 minutes, few if any acts, have managed to conjure such a twisted, unique hybridization of genres with such expert craft and reverence equated to both. When not ensnared by its hypnotic abrasion, you'll catch yourself pondering how psychedelic is this black metal, or how blackened is this psych-rock? The answer is blowing on the demon wing-flapped winds of the band's namesake.
