Lately, Quentin Vandewalle's Antinote label has swung between fiendishly out-there synth-wave and the rugged, retro-futurist revivalist gear of house eccentric Geena. Curiously, this label debut from the little-known producer Panoptique touches on both sounds. Title track "Boiler Broom" (we chuckled, at least) is dark and exotic, with bubbling acid lines and held-note chords reclining seductively over a hissing drum machine groove. It's robust and forthright, but there's a subtlety to the composition and production that makes it particularly engaging. Flip to the B and you'll find two downtempo compositions; the Boards of Canada-ish warmth of "Interlude 1" and the gently rhythmic, horror-influenced swirl of "Interlude 2".
