By 1987, Detroit's undisputed "Mr Groove", Kevin McCord was adapting his boogie, soul and electrofunk sound to incorporate the growing influence of Chicago house and New Jersey garage. Here one of the best examples of these experiments - a one-off production for honey-voiced singer Jonathan Haywood - is given the reissue treatment by Isle of Jura. 'Pretty Face' is superb: a fine example of a sparkling, life-affirming crossover dancefloor soul jam that displays an enormous amount of influence from the (then) underground sounds of house and garage. The 12" version and instrumental take are our picks. Over on the flip, we're treated to three mixes of sugary synth-soul cut 'Wonderland', which sees McCord share mic duties with front man Haywood. It's good, but 'Pretty Face' is the real highlight of the EP.
