Stories of triumph over adversity are always captivating. Especially when packaged in an album that reaffirms the artist as inspired talent. Torres' previous, 'Three Futures', was her most difficult, the first on UK institution 4AD and the last, with poor sales leading to a premature end to a record deal and causing the singer-songwriter to question her future in the industry.
Almost made for a movie montage, she's done the opposite. Coming back with perhaps her finest, and certainly her most complete album to date, 'Silver Tongue' returns to themes of obsessive love, a longing to turn desire into something tangible and the vulnerability of opening one's hearts. Fitting themes indeed. It's behind the words that this one really stands out, though, not that the lyrics aren't great. Torres has produced and every second of this self-released aural world, where propellant beats, folksy nuances and warm synth work share equal limelight.
