With such a vast and impressive catalogue behind them, The Roots would be forgiven the odd slip-up. Yet so far, they've not really made one. Certainly, this new set - their follow-up to last year's largely slept-on Wake Up - is as formidable as you'd expect, expertly showcasing their famously loose, live and organic take on neo soul and hip-hop. With a number of guest MCs and vocalists popping by to pep up their heavily melodic, strings-and-piano-laden concoctions, it feels like business as usual. Sure, there's some welcome experimentation - notably a trio of classical pieces given a hip-hop twist - but for the most part they stick to the tried and tested. But when you're as good as The Roots, why tinker with the formula?
