It has been 35 years since X last gave us an album, and 40 years since they exploded onto the punk rock scene with the landmark 'Los Angeles'. For most bands, that would be enough time to run out of steam and start questioning whether they could still make the kind of rousing, high energy ammo we all love outfits like The Ramones for, but John Doe et al seem to have been re-charging, rather than winding down. 'Alphabetland' is easy to fall in love with. Instantly. From opening title track to 'Goodbye Year, Goodbye', it's purist, heart on sleeve, wiping blood from mouth business that's more authentic than half the punk efforts between this and our last taste of the outfit. Even managing to sneak in a closing piano-jazz-spoken-word-essay on the state of play today, 'All The Time In The World', it's a modern classic.
