Review: The influence of '90s trance on contemporary dance music has been obvious for a while, though as far as we can remember this single-sided salvo marks the first time a fashionable underground label has released an official remix of a trance classic. The classic in question is Dutch trancer Three Drives' popular progressive trance club smash "Greece 2000", which was absolutely massive in clubs back in 1997. Moscoman smartly pitches down the groove a little to appeal to house and disco floors, a move that allows Three Drives beautiful piano motifs, drifting pads and bubbling electronic melodies a little more breathing space. Wisely, Moscoman has also included a trippy, stripped-back breakdown, which only serves to heighten excitement when the main groove and melody drops back in.

Review: Tale of Us's Afterlife label is right at the forefront of the melodic techno trend that has ruled major clubs and festivals all over Europe for the last few years. Canadian alchemist Tone Depth is a perfect fit and so it makes sense he is back here with three more of his trance inducing big room cuts. 'Walls' (feat Groj) is always on the rise thanks to the circling pads and far-sighted feel of the groove. 'Nero' is a high speed affair with plenty of overflow trance emotions and 'Terra' closes with sci-fi modulations and big, rubbery drums.

Review: We've very much enjoyed the return of trance to the underground and though purists will say the sound has never gone away, it sure has been some years since trance, for right or wrong, has been seen as cool. Now it is permeating all worlds from electro to techno to house and this EP does that as well as any we have heard recently. TYWI opens with the prog-tinged house banger that is 'Reality Checkpoint' complete with serene synth work and euphoric energies. After the more nimble Maruwa remix comes the cosmic trip that is 'Spellbound' and the lush and widescreen designs of the uplifting 'Laws of Motion'.

Review: Canadian producer James Teej is hard to pin down. His glittering, heavily electronic productions sit somewhere between deep house, nu-disco, old-fashioned progressive house and downtempo beats, with occasional nods to the early '90s "intelligent techno" of Orbital. This second album, his first for Last Night on Earth, continues this trend. At its best, it glistens with positive melodies and acid-flecked dancefloor shuffle (see "Leaving the Island" and the bright and breezy "The Last Request"), while there's enough odd turns (the Meat Beat Manifesto-ish "Renunion" and decidedly Balearic "Sun Waltz & The Landing") to keep things fresh.

Review: Back in the '90s, Renaissance's Mix Collection series was a byword for quality. Since being relaunched in 2008, it's largely failed to hit the mark. This double-disc journey from German veterans Ali and Basti Schwarz, though, is something of a peach. While there's plenty of their usual floor-friendly thrills to be found on the second disc - look out for Matthew Jonson's pulsating "Automaton" and a particularly tasty Pachanga Boys remix of Slove's "Flash" - it's the more considered first disc that really impresses. Notably deeper, more melodic and blessed with all manner of warm electronic curiosities (Acid Pauli and Laura Weider's lovely "Oregano", Isolee's yearning "Allowance" and Axel Bowman's picturesque "Cubic Mouth" being the best examples), it offers a far more rewarding listening experience than you'd perhaps expect.
