Review: Few conversations or analyses surrounding doom metal can begin without mentioning the integral Sleep and their genre-defining opus Dopesmoker. That same analytical discussion cannot be rounded up without OM coming into the fray, as the duo of bassist Al Cisneros and drummer Chris Haikus originally worked together as Sleep's rhythm section. The hypnotic 'Gebel Barkal' single would serve as the final recording from the pair following the 2007 full-length Pilgrimage, before 2009's God Is Good would welcome the arrival of current drummer Emil Amos and signal the group's continued expansion into an eventual three-piece.

Review: Orgone is back in California and coming in hot with Chimera, a fire-breathing spectacle of psychedelic Afro-soul. Produced by Sergio Rios (Neal Francis, Say She She), Chimera is an electrifying, dream-like odyssey, tripping through the hazy swamps of New Orleans, weaving textures of entrancing voodoo soul, thrumming Afro-funk, and stoney psyche-rock. On Chimera, the Los Angeles-based outfit carves tough, gritty, infectious grooves into heady dance rhythms. Taking its name from a mythical beast with the head of a lion, the body of a goat, and the tail of a serpent, Chimera conjures a state that is at once trance-like and heart-poundingly exciting. The album opens like a heady puff of smoke in the face with 'Hallowed Dreams,' drawing the listener into a state where reality blurs and the music takes control. The focus track, 'Zum Zum,' is a hooky Afro-funk dance floor heater that synchronizes your heart rate to its propulsive percussion, the hypnotic rhythm building into a raucous, psychedelic climax. Review: It may only be January, but we already have a firm contender for time warp classic of 2017 here - this self-titled debut from Once & Future Band, somewhat contrary to their very name, is a veritable smorgasbord of sugary '70s prog-pop, indeed the kind of thing that Jeff Lynne continues to have fever dreams about to this very day. The harmonies here may bring to mind The Beach Boys, yet this meticulously constructed yet never precious album triumphs through its ability to conjure up an expansive and wonder-filled era of sonic grandstanding without ever sounding like tired retro pastiche. It's almost enough to have one wondering how that Jimmy Carter presidency will work out.

Review: Opa's Back Home was first reocrded in 1975 but not released until 1996; it was the fourth and final album by the esteemed Uruguayan fusion band, whose preferred admixture was usually some melted pot of funk and samba, making for an impressive heuristic building on their intuitive recalling of their mutual upbringing in South America. Mysteriously (for reasons unknown to the band), Opa's debut was shelved and remained so until the mid-1990s. But the story goes that it was recorded after renowned label producer and owner Larry Rosen heard the band playing in a Brooklyn nightclub; with this in mind, Back Home makes for an ironic title, since the sonic turn expressed by the band is not one of homesickness, but rather that of an immersion in New York's metamorphous music scene ('Brooklynville' has an instant proto-hip-hop vibe, if not for its original urban field recording, then certainly for its bulbous broken funk twang). Now reissued on vinyl and CD via Far Out, you won't want to miss this round trip.

Review: Lore Of The Land is a debut release from Order of the 12 and it was recorded under the castle in Lewes in East Sussex. It features the legendary Richard Norris on keyboards, drums and production and drawing on all his considerable know-how next to Rachel Thomas on vocals and Stuart Carter on guitars. The record pulls from Sussex folk music as well as plenty of hints of a love and respect for psych-folk acts such as Trees or Mellow Candle. It's a beautiful 10-track body of work that sounds both steeped in ancient mystery and full of fresh modern invention.

Review: We're always hyped to see another transmission blast out from the furnace of John Dwyer's Osees. You never quite know what it might be forged into the grooves, but on this occasion Dwyer's here to outline the ingredients of Intercepted Message as 'a pop record for tired times'. Given the band's embrace of wildly meandering, psychedelic rock abandon, this is a strikingly focused record steeped in verse-chorus structure and laden with bright daubs of synths. The title track is also the lead single - a buoyant synth-pop dance monster with the attack you'd expect from Dwyer's project, and it tells you this is the Osees at their most direct.

Review: San-Fran experimental rockers Oxbow dedicated their eighth album Love's Holiday to familial renewals, marking the point at which guitarist Niko Wenner's two children were born shortly after his father's death. Despite the immediate inspirations, the album also cycles through many of the more all-encompassing kinds of live humans may encounter, from romantic to tragic. We hear the band segue through gargantuan plains of looping guitar and reverb-drenched vocals from lead vocalist Dan Adams; ostensibly, it sounds closer to an exploration of grief than commonly received ideas of "love", although relatively few pop-cultural ideas of love keep it real enough to reflect the strife that comes with it.
