Kill The Devil
  1. Kill The Devil (3:22)
  2. Bury The Devil (3:36)
Review: Original copies of the original 1978 seven-inch of 12 Tribes Of Israel's debut single are not only hard to find, but also exceedingly expensive on the rare occasions they do come up for sale. This reissue then is well overdue. "Kill The Devil" is that rarest of things: an instrumental roots reggae workout that peppers a dancefloor-friendly groove with fluid piano, Hammond organ and jazz guitar solos. The flipside dub version - re-titled "Bury The Devil" - is also superb, with a stripped-back, reverb-drenched version of the track's killer groove rightly taking pride of place throughout.

Fever (reissue)
Cat: SJR 43412. Rel: 08 Nov 19
  1. Horace Andy - "Fever" (3:47)
  2. Im & The Agg - "The Flue" (2:04)
Review: "Fever" is one of Horace Andy's biggest hits. Amazingly, it has never been given its own release so Studio One has done the right thing and put it out on a super loud 12" for the first time. It first landed way back in 1973 before Andy rose to contemporary fame appearing with Massive Attack on five of their albums, but still hits hard. The lush vocals sit well in the swinging drums and bass, and makes it a sure fire dance floor destroyer that won't hang around. Comes accompanied with a Cedric "Im" Brooks instrumental version on the flip.

Cat: RF 307. Rel: 08 Jul 20
  1. No No No (3:25)
  2. No No No (version) (3:57)
Review: Standby for KC White's excellent 1973 version of the song made famous by Dawn Penn. The submissive message of the lyrics rings out over fat bass and has just as superb an effect as first time round. This wasn't White's only cover, because he is best known for covering hits like "First Cut Is The Deepest", always adding his own spin and at least equally the quality of the source material. The version on the reverse is a heady one and these are such enduring tunes that this is the fourth time they have been reissued since first time round. Crucial.

Hold Down
Hold Down (7")
Cat: HSRSS 003. Rel: 26 Jun 20
  1. Hold Down (2:50)
  2. Nice Nice (2:47)
Review: The Kingstonians were a relatively short-lived Jamaican band whose greatest work was produced by Derek Harriott between 1968 and '70. It was at the tail end of this period that they recorded their sole album, "Sufferer", an early reggae classic featuring a swathe of sought-after cuts. It's from that set that these two tracks are taken. For the record, both have appeared on 7" singles before, but are so hard to find that collectors are willing to spend up to 500 Euros to find original copies. A-side "Hold Down" is particularly potent, with the vocal trio's fuzzy vocals rising above a killer early reggae rhythm much in Hammond organ stabs, warm bass and clipped guitars. "Nice, Nice" meanwhile is a more up-tempo affair that gives a little more prominence to a typical early reggae guitar riff. Together the two tracks make for a suitably scintillating package.

Woman Of The Ghetto
  1. Woman Of The Ghetto
  2. Woman Of The Ghetto (Side Walk Doctor version)
Review: First released in 2007 and here reissued for the first time since, Jennifer Lara's inspired reggae cover of Marlena Shaw's 1968 soul classic "Woman Of The Ghetto" was reportedly one of the last recordings made by both Lara and producer Clement Seymour "Sir Coxsone" Dodd. It remains a stunning version, with Lara's weary, heartfelt vocal working perfectly with the chunky, dub-wise riddim provided by the Jackie Mittoo-fronted Sound Dimension backing band. The trippy, flipside "Side Walk Doctor Version" revision is arguably even better, with snippets of Lara's vocal echoing across Dodd's formidably dubbed-out soundscape.

  10. Open The Iron Gate (part 2) (2:12)
Review: The Lee "Scratch" Perry produced Revelation Time is often said to be a definitive record from the Jamaican canon and is widely regarded as the best album Max Romeo ever wrote. Initially it was only put out in Jamaica in 1975 then two years later in 1977 under the name Warning! Warning! A year after that, the rest of the world was treated with a release, again under a new name, this time Open The Iron Gate. Now it is served up under its original name with all 10 tracks hitting hard and making their mark.

Review: Soul Jazz are the absolute maestros when it comes to putting together overview compilations in whatever genre. They are particularly strong on the ska and dub front, though, as this next project proves. It marks the 20th anniversary of the Studio One Rockers collection just in time for Record Store Day 2020. Owned and founded by Clement 'Coxsone' Dodd, Studio One's output was legendary and very much guided the evolution of reggae music for many years. All the highlights are included here on this special one-off pressing.

Poor & Humble
Cat: 060181 1105214. Rel: 14 Aug 20
  1. Wayne Wade - "Poor & Humble" (5:12)
  2. Bunny Lie Lie - "Babylonian" (4:52)
Review: Standby for an extended version of Wayne Wade's roots anthem "Poor And Humble" on this new 12" from Greensleeves. It was recorded initially in 1981 at the iconic Channel One and mixed by Hopeton "Scientist" Brown at King Tubby's studio. It has a fat riddim that trainspotters will recognise from dub classic "Space Invaders", and one with sci-fi effects and echo that draws you in endlessly. On the flip is another majestic track, also from 1981, this time a fantastic extended cut of "Babylonian" by the somewhat rather underrated vocalist Bunny Lie Lie.
