Review: Dave Barker of 'Double Barrel' fame is back on the mix here for the Original Gravity label. This is the second form the many in as many months and is on the faster end of the reggae tempo scale so prepare to be swept up and skanking in no time. The lo-fi 60s reggae and early ska vibes are strong on this one as the dancing Hammond organ chords compliment Barker's effortless flow. Horn stabs and drums with infectious swagger complete the a-side 'Peace of Mind'. On the flip, The Regulators offer up a nice and laidback, deep-cut dub version with 'Jamaican beat.'

Here he lays down some classic and heartwarming reggae sounds with The 18th Parallel serving up the dub. 'Ghetto Stays In The Mind' is a classic with dreamy harmonica leads and a rumbling rhythm section that brims with detail and character. The flip side is a dub that is just as great.

Review: The good folks at Rock A Shaka have long been encouraging us to slow down and sink into a softer way of life, at least that's what we assume from their continually excellent output. This latest downtempo delight is a split 7" featuring Cassandra and Tyrone David. The former's 'Happiness Togetherness' opens up with heart-aching and soul-melting vocals unfolding in graceful fashion over the the lover's rock rhythms below. Tyrone David then offers 'Tell Me Why' which has more great vocals with a more indie twist. The drums remain cuddly and persuasive.

The raw, high octane and primordial influence of techno looms large throughout with Chouk Bwa & The Angstromers really going for the jugular. Heft modern bass weight, deft electronics and traditional Afro-Caribbean polyrhythms all collide with trance-including and mind-melting results.

Review: The classic 'Two Sevens Clash', which Joe Gibbs produced so well, is a timeless reggae outing that gets a welcome reissue here. Anyone of a certain age might remember this as a soundtrack to the years when punk was appropriating reggae sounds. The tune is from an album that was listened to between punk gigs and when not getting beaten up by Teds. The band of course didn't know this would become its fate and in isolation it remains a special listen with some smart mixing desk effects, hissing hi hats and nice dusty and deep low ends.

Review: George Dekker was a founding member of The Pioneers, a hit reggae group who'd plenty of UK chart success with big tunes like 'Long Shot Kick de Bucket,' 'Let Your Yeah be Yeah' and 'Sweet Inspiration'. Here, for a special Record Store Day 20210 release, we get a remake of 1968 tunes 'Nana.' It first came on the Trojan label and is a highly sought after original that fetches plenty. It's a super sweet tune with lazy horns and a swaggering riddim. On the backside is a version with MC the Oxman and legendary Studio One and Bob Marley trombonist Vin Gordon. This one is a sympathetic version that only tweaks the signal a little.

Review: Original Gravity Records turn out the essential 45s like no body's business. Next ump for the vital label is a brace of covers from The Regulators. It is one of two new 7"s they have out right now and is limited to just 50 copies. It carries on from previous releases with Melbourne Douglas and The Regulators covering tunes with an early reggae, Britpop style. The vocals here from a certain indie band get re-sung and reframed. They passionate and singable, with a natty reggae beat and nice warm chords. The flip side is a dub for those who like it that way.

Review: The next Boom Shacka Lacka is yet another crucial outing for dub heads. It comes from The Disciples and features the pipes of Earl 16. It features two different tunes in two different forms starting with 'Life Is A Journey', a mid-tempo and fat-bottomed dub with pleading vocals from Earl up top next to some natty keys and horns. A hefty dub version is next up with some signature hissing hi-hats and rumbling bass. The B-side has 'Journey Dub' to sink you into a spotter mind before a different mix of it then brings more raw harmonic leads.

Review: Many of you reading this may recognise this song from Dennis Brown's rendition on his iconic Visions LP, but this version actually predates that one. It was originally penned by Winston MacAnuff, also known as the Electric Dread, and features vocals by Earl Sixteen. It has previously debuted as a 7" on Gibbs' Belmont label in 1975, while Sixteen went on and recorded it again for Derrick Harriott on the Wild Flower label a year later. This rendition is often considered the definitive cut, but we shall leave you to decide on that one.

Review: Alton Nehemiah Ellis was known as Mr Soul of Jamaica thanks to the hugely expressive voice he was gifted with. He also had a fine knack for writing great songs and always brought real emotions to his work. That is typified here as he linked with The Flames as well as Tommy McCook & The Supersonics for the buttery smooth and impassioned 'If I Could Rule The World' with its natty riffs, swaggering drums and of course golden vocals. Tyrone Evans takes acre of the flip with a version that is more upbeat and optimistic as a result.

Review: The John Collins vaults have been dug deep into for this new 12" on SpeciaL Request. Both of the tunes have been remastered and reissued and were written by the great overs rock maestro John Collins himself. First up is the super sweet and infectiously lumpy rolling reggae of Victor Romero Evans's 'At The Club.' It's a blissed out tune with a fat bottom and silky vocals. On the flip is the much more spaced out and cosmically minded dub, 'Lift Off,' by The Detonators. It's a heady tune that invites you in deep and is perfect for those stoner Sunday sessions.

Review: George and Glen Miller are undoubtedly best known for their West End Records released 1982 boogie-soul classic "Touch Your Life". They released plenty of other records that flitted between soca, reggae, disco, and - in the latter stages of their career - electrofunk. "Easing", which appeared at some point at the turn of the '80s on London label Third World, remains one of their most potent releases - and, in its original form at least, formidably hard to find. This Soundway reissue wisely replicates the track list of the original release, beginning with the title track - a deliciously percussive, musically intricate chunk of peak-time disco smothered in sharp, Afro-funk style horns and George and Glen Miller's lilting reggae-soul style vocals. The flipside "Version" strips out the vocals, allowing listeners to hear in greater detail the pair's impeccable arrangements and instrumentations (particularly the fine orchestration and rich groove).

Review: Jamaican rocksteady vocal group The Jamaicans linked with Tommy McCook & The Supersonics back in 1967 for this piece of rocksteady gold. The a-side of this reissue comes with the original Treasure Isle-version of the 1967 festival song. It's heavy, love struck, earthy and organic. The super B-side is a remixed version of the A-sides's backing track, but with the addition of some overdubbed percussion and syndrum parts as well as a sweet but uncredited toasting and DJ appearance by Jah Thomas. Both sound as hot and crucial now as they did all those many years ago.

Review: Talented singer Keithus Dimits Selassie I has a deep emotion to the tone and message of his music. It is perfect for more spiritual dub sounds and that's the case here. His interpretation here rides nicely on the lazy rhythm below, with acoustic riffs dancing in mid air above puddles of echo. On the flip, Roberto Sanchez stepped up at Lone Ark studios to craft his own slow motion version that is a perfect partner for the a-side. This is a serious piece of 7" wax that packs a punch on many levels.

Review: New 7" from Jamaican roots vocal harmony group Kushart, with France's Sons Of Africa on rhythm and production. 'Foundation' brings up the A, presenting to the listener a foundational affirmation of the "gift of life", which resounds in the song's chorus, and complements an overall opining of love, heraldry and freedom. On the B, there's a beautifully noir closing instrumental; end credits music for a righteous celebration, of the return to the land of the Lamb.

Review: Nick Manasseh and Jeremy The Equalizer pillage their vast vaults for a bunch of rare dubs here that date all the way back to 1998. The spaced out and heady originals 'Next Step' and 'Next Dub', are backed by two further gems in 'The Ark' and 'Conspiracy Dub'. These two have The Equalizer on production and date from a few years later in the early 90s. All four of these solid saes are perfectly designed to be played loud and proud of proper sound systems. This is their first time on vinyl.

Review: Pressure Sounds have dug out a previously unreleased version of this lovely roots instrumental from Tommy McCook and The Aggrovators. It was recorded at King Tubby's Legendary studio with production by Bunny 'Striker' Lee and was first found on the Playlist Original King of Dub album. Its a lute, lazy jam with sliding hi hats and nice lead melodies that are bright and airy. The flip pairs tings back a little but the tune remains crucial. This lovely slice of dub comes in a hand stamped brown sleeve.

Review: Sunset's reissue series of Harry J releases continues with this gem from the late, great Freddie McKay's 1986 collaboration with The Jah Apostles, one of the last productions to feature the singer - who seamlessly navigated from the early ska days right up to the digital era - before his untimely death in November of the same year. McKay's soulful vocals ride effortlessly over the Apostles' mesmerising rhythms here, meaning that it is impossible not to be transported listeners to the golden shores of Jamaica at sundown. As is so often with the case with reggae, there's a dubbed out version on the flip - we wouldn't have it any other way.

Review: The Pressure Beat crew throw it back to the heyday of roots reggae here with a superb pair of tunes from 1969. One of these in original for will cost you a few quid so it's nice to have good sounding copies on fresh wax available once more. Ken Parker's A-side cut 'It's Alright' is short at under three minutes but boy does it hit a super sweet spot with his delicate falsetto vocal over rickety roots low ends and rolling, warming bass. On the flip, things get more upbeat and energetic with some raw horn work on Johnny Moore & The Cobbs's 'One Love' with its off-balance chords.

Review: Sound Of Thunder outta France lands at release number ten here with another gorgeous slice of lovers rock on 45rpm. It features contemporary producers and vocalists Loic Paulin & The SOA offering up A-side single 'Jason White'. At less than three minutes it is the definition of short but sweet but in that time it manages to make its mark with the yearning vocals really hitting home next to nice heat-damaged organ chords and a classic reggae rhythm. On the flip, Mellowmood spins out the sounds via plenty of mixing desk tweaks on his version 'Poor Jason Dub'.

Review: Lee Perry & The Upsetters are responsible for no end of legendary dub sounds. The master producer, Black Ark studio owner and his trusty backing band rarely ever missed when they laid down sound and that is certainly true of 'Kiss Me Neck,' a popular jam from 1975 that now gets reissued. It's a cracking bit of 70s roots with heavy funk overtones and horns recorded at Black Ark. As is always the way, this one comes back with a killer dub and arrives in a thick Lee Perry & The Upsetter sleeve.

Review: Swiss record label Darker Shade Of Roots have got a crucial new roots offering on their hands here. Ras Ico & The Shades are in charge and showcase their authentic reggae sound which owes a lot to the classic sound of Jamaican. The earthen and dusty vibes of the slow motion drum swaggers and natty chords up top are pure bliss. The vocals bring extra soulful sounds and before long you'll have your heard lost right amongst them. 'The First Day' on the backside is another masterfully meandering riddim with louche drums and heady melodic leads.

It's a fusion of Afrobeat, soul and funk on a reggae rhythm that has conscious vocals about reconnecting with the earth. Flip it over and you will get a superb trombone-led version for sunnier days.

It features assistance from the great Ernest Ranglin and Tyrone Downie and in original form 'Memories Of Old' is a laid back reggae roller with some superb acoustic guitar bringing hints of Spanish sunshine to the percolating, fat-bottomed bass. The melodies are conversational and interact perfectly with the organ chords, while on the flip the version is more heady and paired back as well as being doused in reverb.

Review: Mountone Records wins us over right from the first moment of this, their first release. They feature Jamaican legend Stranger Cole seeing up his buttery vocals with music from The Steadytones on a limited edition rocksteady 7". 'Rude Boy' has superb horns leading the way as the swaggering, ska-infused rhythms carry you away on a hot day and the guitar riffs keep you moving. Flip it over and you'll find the slightly longer 'Koffee'. It's slower and more precise, with a haunting and mystical lead next to more rock-tinged guitar kicks and bolder drum hits. Review: Unearthed from obscurity, this is a late 80s gem that shines anew here and brings together UK street soul and lovers rock into something entirely brilliant. Said to have been discovered in a white label box during a North London crate digging trip, this double-sided killer was originally released as a 12" and come here on 45rpm with big sound system beats and gorgeous melodies next to the soaring and angelic vocals by T-Dynamix & Lisa Ellis. This 1989 treasure originated near Manchester and now Planets press it up in limited numbers so do not sleep.

Review: Last year, Freestyle Records reissued 'Tonight's The Night', the 1983 debut from West London outfit Take Three - a collaboration between production trio S.H.E (Steve Sinclair, Peter Hinds and Kevin Ellis) and lover's rock vocal harmony group Alpha (AKA Marlene Richardson and sisters Jackie and Jean Heron). 'Can't Get Enough', another gem from the band's vaults, dates from 1985 and was initially released as their final single. In keeping with the group's roots, it comes in two contrasting mixes: a gorgeously dreamy, glossy and glassy 'Soul Mix' powered forward by squelchy synth-bass, mid-tempo beats and jaunty, jazz-funk style keyboard riffs, and the 'Reggae Mix'. As the title suggests, this radically alters the tempo and groove of the track - it's basically synth-heavy, mid-80s lovers rock - whilst retaining key elements of the A-side soul version.

Review: Jamaican Recordings take a trip back to Tappa Zukie's classic dub cut 'Natty Princess Dub', which they put out on a 10", some 20 years ago. Zukie's primary career was through the late 70s and early 80s, with his name on a huge swathe of singles, dubplates and specials through the years after he arrived in the UK in 1973. 'Natty Princess Dub' is a standout cut from that era, stripped down to a skeletal core of drums and bass for a proper dubwise ride, and 'Rock You Rock' and 'Dub Hypocrites' on the flip are just as serious for any selector.

Rod Taylor's 'Ruff 'N' Tuff' kicks things off with edgy chord vamps that never let up while his vocals unfold up top next to brighter synth stabs. Filomuzik then brings a version, the Cuss Cuss Riddim, that locks down the same groove without the vocals. Mikelino Rutz's 'Call Me Champion' has new vocals with a more stylised angle laid over the same rhythm and two further reworks from Paco Ten and George Palmer add yet more different styles to this package.

Review: The Techniques and The Zodiacs are two revered reggae groups renowned for their distinct sound and contributions to the genre's evolution. Both bands are synonymous with several classics and have left an indelible mark on music history. Now they are back on this new 45rpm with two coveted Jamaican rocksteady and ska gems as part of the celebratory launch of the new Treasure Isle Story series by Charly Records. Review: This is a superb reissue of a real bit of top-quality roots and voters rock on 7". It finds singer Ruddy Thomas bringing his own fresh vocal update to Errol Dunkley's Keep The Pressure Down and the results are sublime - there is yearning in his vocal and smooth, warming soul next to libidinous horns that add to the vibes. On the flip is a nice tough dubwise flip which people say might well have been mixed by Ruddy himself because he was known to also work as an engineer alongside Errol Thompson at Gibb's Retirement Crescent.

Review: Timmy Thomas, sometimes known as The Magician, frequently regarded as one of the most sampled men beyond the Brown franchise, he's been referenced by everyone from Drake to Dilla to MC Hammer. Here we find two of his most well known cuts, both taken from his 1972 album, Why Can't We Live Together. Review: Nazamba & Dubsetters kicked off this new Finnish Dub & Sound label in a superb style recently and what better way to follow that up than with the reggae master, smoking king and weed aficionado Linval Thompson. This might sound like one of his classic lost cuts from the 70s but it is actually an all new tune from the Jamaican reggae icon. Dubsetters provide the gentle, percussive rhythms which are organic and deep, with Linval's smooth mic work up top adding to the global conversation about the decriminalization of cannabis. Flip it over for an even more mellow and dubbed out sound on the B-side.

Review: The Affin label has always done a fine line in deep techno. That is the case again here with the label's 55th outing. It comes from Toki Fuko and opens with the spine tingling depths, ambient pads and dub chords of 'Ajna.' Theer is then a blissed out and roomy roller in the form of 'Narration 4' and mystic, misty pads and fathom deep bass on 'Black Hole' that sinks you way below the surface. Last of all is 'Narration 2' which has a slippery late night rhythm and frosted pads up top.

Review: Mysticism's Dubplate series has got a couple of great drops lined up at the moment and this is one of them - a boule pack from German digidub pioneers TVS aka Trance Vision Steppers. This was a project that never made it out of the studio but still cooked up some brilliant sounds, which in the case of this collection come from their earlier period between 1995 - 1999, all of which land on vinyl for the first time here. Fans of Adrian Sherwood, Dennis Bovell and Mad Professor will be head over heels of these dub delights - they are deep and atmospheric, with lush ambient pads, downtempo vocals and stoner synths next to more twisted rhythms.

Review: Composer, sound designer, musician, artist. Vienna-based Ulrich Troyer has a number of strings to his bow, all of which have played into a world-building process deeply rooted in dub and sound system culture. Releases on the likes of Deep Midi Musik are a good reference point for newcomers. Here, though, we're in less structured and formalised places, with two pieces - well, one and a bit - of abstraction waiting for you to get lost in. 'Track 1' certainly comes with the kind of low reverberations and effects that call to mind huge speaker stacks in smoke-filled places. But it's also kind of deconstructed journey, it harmonises distorted beats and rhythms with beautiful melodic motifs in a way that's as innovative and beguiling as it is instantly pleasing. Flip it to find something we won't even bother trying to define, a celebration of the remnants of that opening arrangement, perhaps.

Review: Yet another Studio One classic. Willie Williams was one of many artists to feature on Soul Jazz's 'Studio One Soul' series, which documented the throughline between reggae and soul in Jamaica. 'No One Can Stop Us Now' is a dreamy and wall-of-soundy slice of goodness from the mournful crooner, documenting the Jamaican dub vocalist's master plan. The song is a paean for anti-populist motivation - despite the naysayers who sit and criticise, no-one's gonna stop us now.

Review: The Vivian Jackson label has locked in this crucial reissue of a roots classic from Yabby U, a late Jamaican artist and producer who released it originally back in 1977. 'Chant Down Babylon' is a warm one with lazy and rolling drums and natty acoustic guitar riffs with Jah worshiping vocals and Babylon yearnings that unfurl up top with a real smoothness. On the flip, you will find the 'Chant Dub Mix' which removes the vocal chantings and allows the hats to hiss and the snares to take off like UFOs while the fleshy low end is couched in oodles of reverb.
