Wha She Do Now
Cat: OR 126. Rel: 17 Dec 20
  1. Wha She Do Now (2:13)
  2. I Love The Reggae (2:49)
Review: Although best-known for their early rocksteady singles and albums, Jamaican group the Gaylads also made some fine 'proper' reggae in the late 1960s and early '70s. 'Wha She Do Now', which was recorded and first released in 1969, is a great example. It was produced by Clive Chinn and features the group utilising their distinctive solo and group vocals atop a seriously bass-heavy riddim track rich in hazy Hammond organ stabs and chunky guitars. Over on the flip you'll find another gem from 1969: the extremely rare, Vincent Chinn produced 'I Love The Reggae' - a horn-sporting celebration of reggae music that's far more club-ready than the admittedly excellent A-side.

Funny Feeling
Cat: OHM 7009. Rel: 07 Sep 20
  1. The Conscious Minds - "Something New" (2:47)
  2. The Gaylads - "Funny Feeling" (2:45)
Review: The latest 45 on the revitalised Soul Beat label, which was first active in the 1970s, offers up some serious buried treasure from producer, musician and vocalist B.B Seaton. Both tracks originally featured on an ultra-rare, white label 45 that slipped out in Jamaica way back in 1969. The A-side, 'Funny Feeling', features Seaton's celebrated trio, the Gaylads, offering fantastic group harmonies and exquisite delivery of Seaton's loved-up lyrics over a chunky rocksteady riddim. Over on the flip you'll find a fine instrumental from the Conscious Minds ('Something New'), which Seaton later reworked to become the basis of Ernest Wilson's 'I Know Myself'.

Untrue Love
Cat: TRS PI1. Rel: 30 Sep 20
  1. Untrue Love (3:41)
  2. Untrue Love (version) (3:33)
Review: It was in 1984 that Edmond Gladston put out his 'Untrue Love' single. It is one of only two tunes, according to Discogs, but boy that a good one, which since release has been incredibly hard to find. A rare gem of the smooth moving lover's rock scene, it has earthy drums but digi-synths, organic guitar twangs but oodles of echo. It's old yet new, classic yet innovative, and that's why it still cuts through to this day. Flip it over for the ever silkier dub which cannot fail to melt your heart and sink you in deep.

Untrue Lover
Cat: TRS EG2. Rel: 30 Sep 20
  1. Untrue Lover (3:44)
  2. Untrue Lover (version) (3:45)
Review: Edmond Gladston recorded only two tunes, and they both came back in the eighties. Both are early era dancehall jams that are earthy and organic like lovers rock but with some nice studio effects that give them that subtle sleek and futuristic edge. Both tunes are presumably about his love interests - for the first one in 1984 things were going well, but by the second one a year later in you feel things had maybe soured. Either way this is another crucial dub that pairs a fluttering lead melody and nice crisp hits with some storytelling vocals that tug at the heart strings.

Drums & Steel Song (reissue)
  1. Drums & Steel Song (5:01)
  2. Sunshine Steel (4:50)
Review: Way back in 1980 Montego Bay outfit The Golden Sunshine Steel Drum Band self-released their sole, self-titled album, a fine fusion of steel pan music and reggae that has long been a collector's item. For those without funds to buy an original copy of that LP (second-hand ones go for big sums these days), we'd suggest picking up this tidy seven-inch single featuring two of its most celebratory moments. A-side "Drum & Steel Song" is superb, with the band layering hand percussion and ear-catching steel pan melodies atop a sturdy, dub-wise reggae groove. "Sunshine Steel" explores similar sonic territory and more than lives up to the promise of its title.

Launderette (limited 7") (1 per customer)
Cat: STAUB 155. Rel: 22 Apr 20
  1. Launderette (3:48)
  2. Private Armies (6:20)
Review: Second time around for Vivien Goldman's inspired debut single, "Launderette", a fine chunk of no-wave era NYC heaviness that first slipped out way back in 1981. The title track is typical of New York's open-minded post-punk scene, with Goldman adding her distinctive vocals to a bass-heavy backing track big on dub bass, Melodica style flourishes and Latin-tinged percussion. Flipside "Private Armies" is a little more experimental in tone, with dubbed-out guitars and layered vocals riding an unflinchingly heavy, punk-funk style bassline and clicking, high-octane rhythm track. It's arty but impressive and arguably even more potent than the more familiar A-side.

Madness Badness
  1. Goody Gap & The Inn House Crew - "Madness Badness" (feat Vin Gordon) (4:16)
  2. Goody Gap & The Inn House Crew - "Madness Badness" (feat Vin Gordon - version) (4:19)
Review: The Inn House Crew has been serving up the platters that matter on Room In The Sky long enough to have a firm following by now. Once again they bring rather melancholic vibes to this new one. "Madness Badness" feat. Vin Gordon is a flabby dub with pillow bass and rounded drums, but the trumpets that ring out are beautifully muted and sombre. Flip over for an alternative version that's more amped up and direct for those who are after something more energetic. Whichever side you go for, this is one you will want to add to your collection.

Cat: PENGSOUND 001. Rel: 26 Jan 16
  1. Gorgon Sound - "Find Jah Way"
  2. Dubkasm - "Find Jah Way" (version)
Review: Peng Sound revisit their highly sought after debut release. Just shy of two years old, it still rattles and hums with authentic dub warmth and drama. Gorgon Sound's original bubbles with bouncy heat as the bass modulations spring off the double-up kicks. Dubkasm's version is equally alluring as we're invited into a much wider space where guitar shots and other melodic elements are entwined into the mix. One timeless composition, two killer versions, if you weren't lucky enough to grab this first time round, you know what to do!

the Midnight Cowboy soundtrack. Blundetto transformed
the track into a killer deep dubby hit. Both tracks are storming.

  3. A Rocket In Dub - "Otto" (6:22)
  4. A Rocket In Dub - "Quattro" (5:25)
  5. A Rocket In Dub - "Lion Night" (1:51)
Review: True to their usual form, Krachladen Records serve ups big release that is split between Dusseldorf IDM masters Graph aka Stefan Jurke & Jens Beyer and A Rocket In Dub. This is the first in what is promised to be a new series that pops up a few times a year. Graph's 'Gowc Gowac' is a deadly dub with plenty of sci-fi motifs that help add to a feeling of revelation despite the heavy bass. 'Kon Konwac' is all whirring sounds, clacking hits and looped sonic freakiness that keeps you guessing. The three cuts from A Rocket In Dub all offer atmospheric dub with otherworldly found sounds that have you gazing on in awe.

  5. Guux & Junior Dread - "Dub Road" (2:57)
  6. Guux & Junior Dread - "Raw Road" (3:03)
Review: There's a lot to like about this expansive EP from lyricist/vocalist Guux and producer Mr Ites. Guux naturally takes centre stage on vocal opener 'African Blood Defender', a jaunty and attractive number in which stirring synth strings and jangling piano stabs rise above a sturdy riddim. Mr Ites delivers two heavier, echo-laden dub revisions, with the weighty-but-melodious 'Afrikan Raw Defender' being our pick of the pair. Over on the flip, legendary Jamaican toaster Junior Dread lends a hand on 'This Road', which is then stripped-back and beefed up for the dance by Mr Ites on the equally impressive 'Dub Road' and 'Raw Road' versions.

Jay Glass Dubs vs Guerilla Toss
Cat: DFA 2572LP. Rel: 12 Jun 20
  1. Skull Dub (6:39)
  2. String Dub (7:26)
  3. TV Do Dub (5:26)
  4. Can I Get The Real Dub? (9:23)
Review: DFA Records and Bokeh Versions have teamed up for a joint release here that offers up some mad reworking of "Guerilla Toss" by Greece-based producer Dimitris Papadatos, aka Jay Glass Dubs. Up first, the "Skull Dub" is a dark, echoing affair filled with dread and ominous drum rolls. The "String Dub" is much more fulsome, with vast caverns of bass, water droplets and spooky reverb expanding all around you before the TV Do Dub is a little more playful and airy, but still with a subtle sense of tension running through the muted harmonica and drifting vocal sounds. "Can I Get The Real Dub" closes out in fat bottomed fashion.

You Have It (Extended)
  1. Barrington Levy - "You Have It" (6:28)
  2. GG's All Stars - "You Have A Dub" (4:39)
Review: Legendary dancehall and reggae artist Barrington Levy started out with a fine run of albums in his early years, and then switched to serving up a steady and solid stream of singles. Some of the most famous ones include "Even Tide Fire a Disaster" and "I'm Not in Love", as well as "You Have It" which is presented here as a nice extended version. It features a pained vocal over a fat and dumpy groove with some tropical percussion and warming chords to help oil the mood. GG's All Stars step up on the flip with a version that is heavy and lazy in all the right ways.
