Review: Almamegretta are a ska, rap, dub, world and reggae group from Naples, Italy, and they deliver their lyrics in their native Napoletano young. In the past they have done remix work for Bristol trip-hop crew Massive Attack but are best known for their 1995 masterpiece Sanacore, which itself has been remixed by dub titan Adrian Sherwood. Congrats to you if you can find an original of this on vinyl, and more so if you're willing to pay the high prices for it once you do. That's not to say it isn't high quality stuff, though, with upbeat and sci-fi dub rollers next to more earthy and sun kissed slow motion rhythms.

Tune Up Ska (reissue)
  1. Tune Up Ska (3:16)
  2. Time Is Ska Tight (Aternative take) (3:53)
Review: While this record looks and sounds vintage - like the majority of Original Gravity's output - it is in fact a revivalist, turn-of-the-60s style ska production from Welwyn Garden City's Neil Anderson. A-side 'Tune Up Ska' is particularly potent, with Anderson and his studio musicians serving up a classic ska groove (think walking bass, up-tempo rhythm and blues drums and tight horn blasts), onto which a variety of fuzzy saxophone and organ solos are layered. Clubs may not be open right now, but when they do, we can see it lighting up ska-loving crowds. Over on the flip, Anderson and company turn their attention (sorry) to Booker T & The MG's cut 'Time is Tight', reinventing it as a boisterous, horn-heavy affair featuring some superb trumpet solos.

  13. Home Is Where The Hatred Is Dub (I Grade dub mix) (4:32)
  14. Rivers Of My Fathers Dub (I Grade dub mix) (6:08)
Review: Hailing from Washington D.C, The Archives are a contemporary reggae band with a social conscience and a love of the ground-breaking proto-rap soul of the late, great Gil Scot-Heron and his musical collaborator Brian Jackson. It makes sense then, that their debut album focuses on Scot-Heron and Jackson's work, brilliantly re-inventing such classics as 'Home is Where The Hatred Is', 'The Revolution Will Not Be Televised', 'It's Your World' and 'Revolution Disguised as Change' as soulful, 1970s style reggae songs. It's a simple idea, but one that works wonderfully well, with the band's core line-up being joined by a revolving cast of guest musicians whose contributions often offer nods towards Scot-Heron and Jackson's jazz roots. One of the most surprising and inspired covers albums we've heard in some time.

Review: Nine years after first working together on The Dynamic Set's 'When Will They Learn' single, Liam Bailey and Big Crown boss Leon Michaels have finally recorded an album together. While that song was a retro reggae-soul treat, Ekundayo builds on the Nottingham singer-songwriter's penchant for recording lo-fi soul, in which his evocative and effortlessly soulful vocals rise above fuzzy, often homemade backing tracks that variously mix and match elements of roots reggae, digi-dub, dancehall, classic '70s soul and folk (see the 'Redemption Song'-esque 'Vixit'). The result is a vibrant, colourful and highly entertaining set that could well push Bailey's career to even higher heights.

Review: We're big fans of London vocalist Liam Bailey here at Juno HQ. He's turned out some timeless 7"s in the last few years and so this full length work is long overdue. Ekundayo translates from the West African Yoruba dialect as 'sorrow becomes joy' which is a perfect sentiment for the qualities of his own voice. Form experimental sounding openers to classic reggae via roots material, downtempo lullabies and fresh and contemporary R&B, it covers a wide range but is all tied together by his buttery smooth vocals. The record was recorded with long time mentor Leon Michels.

Take Me With You
Cat: HR7S 154. Rel: 20 Nov 20
  1. Take Me With You (3:25)
  2. Take Me With You (version) (3:30)
Review: With sunshine becoming a regular occurrence again just in time for summer, two of France's more soulful producers have decided to join forces and offer up something suitably warm and relaxing. With the assistance of vocalist Kahina Ouali, Blundetto and Booker Gee have recorded a killer, Hammond-laden version of Lyn Christopher classic "Take Me With You" that sits somewhere between the organs-and-lo-fi-drum machines flex of Timmy Thomas' "We Can't We Live Together" and the soulful reggae grooves of 1980s lovers rock. The fine A-side original mix, which boasts Ouali's full vocal, is our pick of the pair, though the flipside instrumental "Version" mix, in which Booker Gee gets busy on the organ, is also superb.

Pop Corn (7")
Cat: HR7S 187. Rel: 20 Nov 20
  1. Pop Corn (2:53)
  2. Granny Scratch Scratch (3:58)
Review: Contemporary Hammond B3 maestro Booker Gee (real name Guillaume Metenier) has delivered some seriously good slabs over the last couple of years, and this wholehearted tribute to the JB's could well be the best of the lot. 'Popcorn' is a sparse but seriously heavy deep funk cut, with Metenier's inspired Hammond licks and solos riding a sweaty, break-fuelled groove courtesy of acclaimed modern funk multi-instrumentalist Slikk Tim. Over on the flip, the French musician and producer gives his interpretation of Sound Dimension's 'Granny Snatch', delivering a cosmic funk take full of weighty bass, flanged guitars, jazzy solos and deliciously dubbed-out sounds. It's not quite as instantly accessible as 'Popcorn', but it is certainly equally as potent.

Review: Guillaume Metenier is Booker Gee, a master edit maker and studio wizard who has made his name with some much wanted work on Lucien Entertainment as well as more than once on this label. His second release this month is a trip into the world of ska. 'Out In The Rain' is a perfect sweet spot between rolling reggae rhythms, warm organ chords and skipping kicks. The mood is sensuous and inviting as Gee blends sweet soul with playful funk. The version is only a subtle rework, resining plenty of the charm and allure of the original.

  3. Faith (3:49)
  4. Faith (dub) (3:49)
Review: On his previous releases as Booker Gee, Guillaume Metenier has employed his immaculate organ-playing skills over a range of killer funk and soul grooves. Here he flips the script, delivering atmospheric, fluid Hammond solos over some dub-wise reggae grooves played and produced by Spanish multi-instrumentalist Lone Ark (real name Roberto Sanchez). Both Metenier and Sanchez are in fine form on opener 'Auxmites', a bass-heavy head-nodder that sounds like Lee 'Scratch' Perry producing Jimmy Smith. 'Faith' is a little sunnier and warmer, with Metenier's solos working in perfect unison with Sanchez's glistening guitars, jangling pianos and skanking rhythm. Both cuts come accompanied by pleasingly spaced-out Dub revisions courtesy of Sanchez. Top stuff!

Review: After spending the last few years offering up occasional singles, Swiss Ska and rocksteady revivalists Cosmic Shuffling have finally readied their debut album, Magic Rocket Ship. It's a suitably fun and entertaining affair, with the Geneva-based combo delivering tracks that stick closely to the vintage ska and reggae blueprint while adding a little contemporary poise, polish and studio warmth. The plentiful highlights include righteous dancefloor ska outing 'Cat in the Hat', the Latin-jazz swing of 'Ann Bonny', the languid and skanking reggae haziness of 'Life Goes On' and the Latin-Ska fusion of 'Night in Palermo'.

Review: Some classic UK digital dub and reggae business here, as Culture Freeman and the Bush Chemists collective delve into their collective archives and retrieve a bunch of vintage gems from the 1990s. Side A is all about 'Armagideon', a typically weighty, Melodica-heavy number featuring some superb toasting from mic man Freeman. The accompanying dubs are especially potent, with the sheer sub-weight of the 'Dub 2' version being particularly alluring. Over on side B, Bush Chemists go solo on 1994 gem 'Lightning Skank', a synthesizer and drum machine heavy digi-dub roller blessed with some snaking electronic melodies and delay trails aplenty. It too comes backed with two heavy, stripped-back dub revisions.

Here the Vipers master steady drum & bass rhythms that are detailed with jazz melodies and a gritty post-punk attitude. The record builds on the success of The Green & Copper Tape EPs with extra horns, wild effects and vintage synths all making it a contemporary affair. All 12 tracks will get you in a meditative state where you can take some deserving time to reflect and sinking into your own mindful thoughts.

Review: There's a lot to like about this expansive EP from lyricist/vocalist Guux and producer Mr Ites. Guux naturally takes centre stage on vocal opener 'African Blood Defender', a jaunty and attractive number in which stirring synth strings and jangling piano stabs rise above a sturdy riddim. Mr Ites delivers two heavier, echo-laden dub revisions, with the weighty-but-melodious 'Afrikan Raw Defender' being our pick of the pair. Over on the flip, legendary Jamaican toaster Junior Dread lends a hand on 'This Road', which is then stripped-back and beefed up for the dance by Mr Ites on the equally impressive 'Dub Road' and 'Raw Road' versions.

Review: Dreadwise makes its debut in the vinyl world with a super limited, super high quality 10" that is inspired by the sounds of West Africa as well as the African diaspora as a whole. It's lead by some fantastic Kora playing from UK musician Jude Winwood which lends it a truly authentic feel, as do the host of other traditional West African Instruments which colour its swaggering, deep cut grooves. 'Ngoni Dub' is an airy, upbeat opener with cavernous drums and subtle fills, while 'Kora Dub' is another sunny affair with playful melodies and a low sling bass line that tumbles ever deeper.

Review: First released way back in 1976 and here appearing on wax for the first time in decades, Colombia Colly is the single greatest work of Jamaican toaster Pat Francis AKA Jah Lion. Francis was a talented mic man with a distinctive vocal style - a mix of gruff, patois-heavy proto-raps and scat style improvisations - but his recorded performances were rarely as incendiary as his performances at dances. It took producer Lee 'Scratch' Perry to get the best out of him, which he did and then some on Colombia Colly. The dub style backing tracks provided by Perry were amongst the best of his Black Ark period and made extensive use of re-played and re-framed riddims previously heard on his productions for the likes of Max Romeo, the Heptones and Junior Murvin.

Review: Those who keep an eye on these things will happily tell you that Jah Schulz is one of Europe's most interesting dub producers of recent times, with a trademark style that draws just as much on dub techno and ambient dub as more traditional variations of the form. This is particularly evident on Dub Over Science, his latest six-track missive. He opens with a dab of dub techno ('Dub Can Make a Difference') and a splash of steppers ('Follow Your Dub Instructions'), before finally offering up some hot-stepping digi-dub ('She's a Dub Shooter'). It's a similar story on side two, where the spaced-out ambient dub of 'Dub Over Science' is followed by the dancefloor-friendly 'Dub Mistakes' and the minimalist dub techno of 'What Have You Done For Your Dubmaster'.

  2. Azamat (2:28)
  3. Sawboy (2:06)
Review: Muscut's releases tend to meld existing musical forms into interesting new shapes, and this three-tracker from St Petersburg producer Marble is no exception. While rooted in the deep bass and distinctive rhythmic patterns pf dub, it's not like any dub record we've heard before. That's no bad thing though, because 'Jah' and 'Asamat', in particular, are superb, with the Russian artist combining jazzy woodwind sounds - some 'as played', others electronically manipulated - with touches of subtle surf-rock guitar, deep bass, and rhythms created from unusual electronic sounds. Even more brilliantly bonkers is 'Sawboy', where what sound like energetic clarinet solos stretch out across a squelchy, TB-303 bassline.

Review: Chances are you've already got at least one Bob Marley album in your collection. Even if you own a few, we'd still recommend taking a close look at this quintuple-vinyl celebration of the reggae superstar's career and legacy. The first four slabs of wax take us on a whistle-stop tour of Marley's career with the wailers, moving from fuzzy, lo-fi early career recordings to the height of his worldwide fame in the late 1970s. While there are some classics missing, the compilers have made up for this by including harder-to-find instrumentals and dubs. The fifth disc showcases the strength of Marley's song writing skills by gathering together covers from the likes of Sly & Robbie (with disco star Gwen Guthrie on vocals), Black Uhuru, Max Romeo, Horace Andy and Gregory Isaacs.

Review: The legend of Bob Marley lives on and on and on. Especially when so much of his back catalogue's continually remastered, reissues, and re-cut, as this one has been, at half speed, for extra warm, deep and lavish playback sounds. This 75th anniversary edition of Catch A Fire reminds just how sweet a soul sound the band had, and just how emotive Bob's wailings could be. It was their first album released by Island Records and came about having been advanced money for it by producer Chris Blackwell. Peter Tosh wrote two of the cuts and Bob the rest, with the album's supporting tour really helping to establish their international reputation.
