Review: As the third installment brings attention back on this crucial series, Light In The Attic are running a repress of their second voyage into the plentiful realm of Japanese city pop - another extended cruise through impossibly slick '70s and '80s groovers with that golden studio sound. There's sultry slinkers like Eiichi Ohtaki and sensual funk from Kimiko Kasai on "Vibration (Love Celebration)". Watch out for the heavy bass and subtle synth inflections of Yu Imai's incredible "Kindaichi Kosuke Nishi E Iku" and the impossibly catchy whistlealong 'Hot Sand' by Piper. It's not a competition, but if you crave that US AOR sound, it might just be that the Japanese did it better.

Now four albums in his own name deep, Earthling may not be rewriting any rule books or pushing boundaries and our perception of what's possible, but it is an incredibly well conceived and executed heavy rock 'n' roll album, showcasing a man with seemingly infinite creative energy, here unleashing a combination of heartfelt alt, breakneck garage-grunge, and searing big room stuff that you'll struggle to forget after hearing just once. Songwriting and guitar work at their finest.

Review: Licorice Pizza is the new film from acclaimed director Paul Thomas Anderson. Set in the San Fernando Valley in 1973, it's a veritable time capsule of a movie with a soundtrack to match. There's plenty of classic period pieces gathered here on this album, featuring songs by David Bowie, Nina Simone, and Wings, Donovan, Sonny & Cher, Gordon Lightfoot, and more. As well as that, there's also a new original song written by Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood, who has worked with Anderson before. Review: Years before anyone had ever heard of CBGB, Max's was *the* place in New York City to see cutting-edge rock acts (and mingle with Manhattan scenesters). Near the top of that list was The Velvet Underground, whose final show with bandleader Lou Reed (until a brief 90s reunion) is documented on the live album Live At Max's Kansas City. The quartet mixed such older favorites as 'I'll Be Your Mirror,' 'Femme Fatale' and 'I'm Waiting For The Man', with new songs like 'Sweet Jane' and 'New Age' from their soon-to-be-released Loaded, with plenty of venue atmosphere heard throughout (there is an audible conversation in which Jim Carroll hits up an audience member for pills). Review: U.S label Light In The Attic has hit gold with this hugely popular series. It has done three volumes by now but here comes a welcome reissue of the first from a few years ago. After compilations exploring various Japanese takes on Western music, most notably folk, rock, ambient and new age they switched tack, curating a brilliant double-album set that showcases the best Japanese synth-pop, AOR and boogie recorded between 1976 and '86. The quality threshold remains impressively high throughout, from the blue-eyed-soul breeze of Taeko Ohnuki's 'Kusuri Wo Takusan' and the Chaz Jankel-meets-Thompson Twins style throb of Haruomi Hosono's 'Sports Men', to the talkbox-sporting late night AOR-pop flex's Hiroshi Satoh's 'Say Goodbye' and the glistening, Latin-influenced jazz-funk brilliance of Masayoshi Takanaka.

Review: For all his iconic status in modern rock 'n' roll lore, Bobby Gillespie remains very much a fan, one whose humility regarding the music he loves and the influence it's had on him has never been far away from his public persona. With this in mind, we're in remarkably safe hands with this soothing collection of beatific charmers and laidback deep cuts, which offer a kaleidoscopic trajectory from the very birth of rock 'n' roll (Jerry Lee Lewis) through the '60s (Beach Boys) and '70s (Gram Parsons) via his own journey through punk and beyond in the process. One suspects Mr. Gillespie has had more than his fair share of late nights requiring just such a come down, thus it's little surprise to find the man knows exactly how to handle 'em.

Its lovingly assembled compilations were a great wind into what was hot way before we all had access to every single bit of recorded music from the whole history of time all at the tip of our fingers. They continue to find relevance with their various collections and this one, Yearbook, focuses on the super sounds of the 80s, specifically 1988. It comes on nice translucent blue vinyl across six, yes six, sides. All the artists that you would expect are present and very correct.
