Share Some Love
Cat: ISS 089. Rel: 08 Nov 23
Earl Sixteen - "Share Some Love" (3:50)
Indica Dubs & Nando - "Rebels With Dub" (3:48)
Indica Dubs & Nando - "Trod Good" (3:43)
Indica Dubs & Nando - "Dub Good" (3:44)
Review: Indica Dubs rolls out more of their steel-plated warrior anthems here with the in-house production team stepping up next to Nando for Eternal Dub. This crucial 12" opens with the title cut, which is a collab between the two that rolls on moody drums and has an enchanting melodic lead up top, snaking its way to a better future. The rework is 'Eternal Dubwise,' a more wet and bottomless affair, then Indica Dubs and Nando reunite for 'Sacred Fire' which is busier, more energetic, with broken beats and playful leads. Last of all comes the dub-wise rework that is menacing and dark for those late-night hours.

Get Up Natty
Get Up Natty (version)
No Peace
No Peace (version)
Review: Two previously unheard righteous anthems from the sweet-voiced Icho Candy. The A side, 'Get Up Natty' was cut at Channel One in the mid-eighties, with backing by the Gifted Roots Band, and features an instantly recognisable bed of squelchy FX, elastic synth leads and choppy upstrokes, while the flip is an emotive new cut featuring legends from the Firehouse and Channel One production camps on the riddim. It's great to hear Icho still in fine style, delivering a timeless anthem with a positive message. Both sides also include excellent dubwise versions. Another jewel in the constantly expanding Digikiller catalogue!

Pave The Way
Cat: PMF 004. Rel: 30 Aug 23
Icho Candy - "Pave The Way"
Yakka - "Pave The Dub"
Review: This is a brand new cut by Jamaican rootsman Icho Candy, who still ploughs on strong despite first making his way in the 1970s. Characteristically for Icho, 'Pave The Way' is a ghostly bop, coming packed with antistate political quips - "you reap the system... you reap your liberty" - and a hauntingly soft and almost defeated feel. Yakka comes through on the version, which begins with a beautiful set of harmonies before launching into a huge spring-reverbed, cavernous bubbling.

No Love No Peace

No Love, No Peace (feat Prince Jamo) (4:36)
No Love, No Peace (Ickle's dub mix) (4:34)
Mr Government (feat Lionpulse) (3:51)
Leroy Sax Version (3:37)
Review: Firmly Rooted has done a great job of rolling outage rhythms over the last couple of years. The release rate and quality levels have remained high with the likes of breakout Leeds artist Breakface impressing back in May. Now, 18 months or so after their last outing, Ickle & Hotsteppas are back on the label with some more fresh dubs. First up, 'No Love, No Peace' Ft Prince Jaco is a big, fresh roller with great height and serious bass weight. The dub strips things back to melon-twisting echo and reverb and 'Mr Government' (feat Lionpulse) is an organic dub with brilliantly elastic bass. 'Leroy Sax Version' is a sax-laced dub of the same tune.

Jah Garden

Jah Garden - "Jah Garden" (4:23)
Dubolution - "Dub Garden" (4:23)
Indica Dubs - "Garden Dubplate Mix" (feat Indica dubs) (3:44)
Indica Dubs - "Raw Dub Mix" (feat Indica dubs) (3:45)
Review: Over the last four years, Idren Natural's Dubolution-produced 'Jah Garden' - a steppers-powered roots/digi-dub fusion cut featuring a superb lead vocal - has been a dubplate special in Inidica Dubs' DJ sets. It's fitting then that they've finally decided to release it on their own label, with the killer original mix being joined by a trio of tasty dubs. Dubolution's own dub-style version is faithfully weighty and skeletal, while wisely emphasizing his own jazzy guitar licks, while Indica Dubs' flipside revisions are equally as potent. The 'Garden Dubplate Mix' is a punchy, full-throttle dancefloor dub workout, while the 'Raw Dub Mix' sounds like one of Mad Professor's wilder, heavier offerings.

Moonflute

Moonflute (4:13)
Mozarmedi (4:15)
Review: Room In The Sky knows a thing or two about rock-solid dub and reggae and because of their work over the years, we do too. Often they serve up some classics with new versions from The Inn House Crew adding a fresh dub perspective. But this time it is The Inn House Crew who go it alone with a couple of their own hot-stepping tunes. 'Moonflute' kick off with mystic flute leads and stepping sequences that get you up on your toes as the bright and fresh reggae drums and percussion bristle next to sci-fi effects. 'Mozarmedi' is a slower, more traditional dub but with some gorgeous pianos.

Central Freeway (3:13)
Review: Japan's brilliantly curious but highly listenable Inokashira Ranger band has covered everything in imaginable in their storied 10-year-plus career. Now they turn to The Nolans for some buttery lovers' rock with a warm and familiar edge. 'I'm In The Mood For Dancing' biomes a rolling rhythm with bright Hammond chords and swaggering riffs. The vocal comes from Yuima Enya and is nice and sweet and soulful. 'Central Freeway' on the flip is a smiler-sounding tune with easy-going drum sways and effortless cool vocals.

Barry Issacs & Deemas J - "Revolution Deh Yah" (feat George Dekker) (5:01)
The Rits Riddim Force - "Forward Lewi" (4:57)
Review: Room In The Sky has always dealt in a fine line of roots and reggae whether serving up various artists' collections, reissues or all-star studio bands. Here we get two crucial rhythms on a tidy new 45rpm. The first is Barry Issacs & Deemas J's 'Revolution Deh Yah' featuring George Dekker, a founding member of The Pioneers, the hit reggae group that had plenty of UK chart success. On the flip is The Rits Riddim Force with their 'Forward Lewi', a fleshy, warm and cavernous rhythm that invites you to sink in deep.

Repatriation

Repatriation (10:58)
Blackman's Redemption (4:20)
Review: These 2 Rastafari anthems have been in demand ever since they first landed in 1980 as part of Ital Foundation's sole album, "Ital Foundations Vol 1", so Jamwax have done the right thing and released the pair on the 12'' for the first time. A-side epic "Repatriation" is a 10 minute opus with analogue guitars and a smorgasbord of percussive details bringing the lumpy rhythm to life while flipside "Blackman's Redemption" is a more easy going tune with sunny chords and soul kissed vocals for those lazy afternoons in the garden.

Crown (dub) (3:52)
Review: Italiks and Deep Fried Dub team up to deliver Crown, a deep meditation on self-doubt and musical redemption. The release is the first studio collaboration from longtime friends Sam Cumming (Italiks) and Ben Dudding (Deep Fried Dub), with the former providing the rhythm and vocals, and the latter on mixing and melodica duties. With introspective lyrics born in the depths of a Fiordland forest, Crown considers the challenge of facing your inner demons and dealing with insecurity, ably assisted by the healing power of music. The result is a heavy roots cut that will soothe your soul while rattling your ribcage.

Plastic Love (4:46)
Review: Inokashira Rangers are renowned for their ska/reggae covers of some of the world's best-known songs, with versions of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit', 'Creep' and 'I'm Not In Love', all laid to sweet 7" over the years. Here they team up with regular collaborating singer Sofia Manari, who takes centre stage in covering two J-pop classics closer to home. 'Love Squall', originally written by jazz great Yuji Ohno, hears a vocal rendition, while Mariya Takeuchi's 'Plastic Love' gets a similarly jubilant reworking on the B.

Sex Machine (3:53)
Nagoriyuki (3:40)
Review: By now, we've become accustomed to Japanese outfit Inosakira Rangers offering up reggae and vintage rocksteady style cover versions of pop and dance tracks of old. Their latest cover, of James Brown classic 'Sex Machine', is a little different. It's no less warm, dusty or on-point than its predecessors, but there's no reggae or rocksteady flex - just a warmer, more laidback take on the funk classic, complete with distinctive lead vocals from Keichi Sokabe. They're back in lazy, Sunday afternoon rocksteady mode on original B-side 'Nagoriyuki', a sweet and quietly soulful number that pushes the band's bassist and organist - or more specifically their fine instrumentation - high in the mix for added nostalgic pleasure.

Review: Inna De Yard return with Family Affair, their latest album, and already hailed by many-an-expert as one of their best yet. The large reggae collective were formed in 2000 but still go strong, here enlisting new help on vocals from cameo members Johnny Osbourne as well as that of '60s duo Keith & Tex, on the highlight cover of reggae classic 'Down The Street'. The piano chops of Franklyn 'Bubbler' Waul, twinkly rhythm guitar talents of Dwight Pinkley, and central bass movements by Stepper resound as ever.

Review: Acclaimed reggae and dub collective Inna de Yard reissue their 2021 album Family Affair, yet one more to lay down the skills and talents of this quasi-familial ensemble, consisting of both veterans and youngers from the same close-knit bloodline in Jamaica. Their specialism is recording acoustic versions of classic and original songs in a friendly, natural setting; this one's got 13 versions on it, with covers of Bob Marley and The Congos, and features such core family members as Cedric Myton and Kiddus I, albeit channelling a bittersweet intonation after the group lost four of its kin prior to release.

He upgrades the Gregory Isaacs Kingston 11 catalogue with a truly a-list selection of talent from Jamaica including Sean Paul, Shaggy, Alborosie, Jesse Royal, Bounty Killer and several more. They all bring the down style to the material and some of Gregory Isaacs's finest performances. These are hardcore dubs with killer riddims at their heart and the sort of tunes that are super fresh but also utterly timeless.

Review: Although he first entered a recording studio in the late 1960s, it wasn't until 1973, and the release of the Alvin 'G.G' Ranglin-produced single 'Love Is Overdue' that Gregory Isaacs career started to take off. The success of that record persuaded Ranglin to record an entire album with Isaacs, In Person, which became the now legendary reggae singer's debut full-length. This expanded edition of the album presents the album on disc one, alongside alternative dub versions and other singles Isaacs recorded with Ranglin during the period. Disc two, meanwhile, offers a celebration of Ranglin's other works of 1973 and '74 - Jamaican hit singles (and their corresponding dubs) which are largely lesser-known outside the Caribbean.

Review: Israel Movements is an 80's roots reggae band from Birmingham. Someone has been digging in the vaults and tuned out some multitrack tapes for this underrated opus so that they can be pressured. The talented band bring deep roots, mad steppers, dii sounds and on this version some newly extended dubs that really make their mark. 'No sniff, no coke, no heroin, just stick with sinsemilla' is a fine hook to kick off the opening track with and from there things remain essential as many different reggae styles are explored with great social-political commentary up top.

Review: Well? Time to swallow your pride and get some courage! Or, so said the supergroup Israel Vibration, who first channeled their anti-cowardliness message into song form with 'Why You So Craven' in 1982 via Arrival Records. A standout single, its namesake soon came to refer to an entire album of the same name, which is now reissued here via RAS. Aside from the damning condemnation of money and desire heard on the titular song, other star bits on the album include 'What's The Use' and 'Highway Robbery', flaunting their distinctive roots-radical vision (masterminded by none other than Scientist) and aim to impel the listener into conjuring a new world for themselves.

Review: After dropping many crucial dub albums on the likes of Twinkle Records, Music House Family, Reggae On Top, King Earthquake, and Conscious Sounds, Barry Issac now brings his brilliant vocal tones to Room In The Sky. Issac is well established as a top roots reggae talent who has worked with some of the most notable sound systems out there - Jah Shaka and Channel One being two of them. Here 12 tough riddims featuring some top talents like reggae trombonist Vin Gordon from the Skatalites and Winston Reedy who fronted The Cimarons get finished in style by his work up top. A timeless album for sure.
