Review: As well as navigating the realms of dub and reggae, infusing each track with his signature vintage sound and infectious grooves, Prince Fatty is well known for taking famous songs and flipping them into reggae territory, a wonderful mix of the familiar and the unepxected that usually works wonders on the dancefloor. With the fantastic 'Black Rabbit,' dub don Prince Fatty masterfully tackles Jefferson Airplane's 60s anthem 'White Rabbit', which took its inspiration from Lewis Carroll's surreal story Alice In Wonderland but hooked those references up to the drug experiences of those countercultural rtimes. The A-side is graced by with the vocals of regular Fatty collaborator Shniece, whose performance does more than simply ape Grace Slick's, adding lines and heaps of her own personality, while rich basslines, swirling echoes and soulful melodies all showcase some exceptional production skills. Naturally, there's a dub version on the B-side, and all in all this a testament to Prince Fatty's enduring influence in the contemporary reggae scene.

This two-disc set focuses on seven-inch singles he produced and released on his Observer label in 1976 and 1977, supplementing vocal cuts with flipside alternate versions and his own 'riddim'-focused takes. Review: Jo Wallace's Ramrock label has always proved adept at blending reggae, dub and lovers rock with elements of jazz, soul and Balearic beats. You'll find a similar blend of sounds at the heart of the label's latest 12" - a fine, roots reggae style cover version of Aaron Neville's much-loved rare groove jam 'Hercules' by Asian Dub Foundation singer Ghetto Priest. Review: This Best Of The Morwells album originally landed back in 1981 but has not degraded in any way over the ensuring 40+ years. It is a superb collection of vocal roots that first came on the American label Nighthawk Records and might be best known for standout hits like 'In God We Trust' and 'Africa' as well as 'Educate Your Mind.' The lyrics muse on plenty of still relevant socio-political topics while riding on nice deep rhythms with earthy drums and meandering leads. The band went on to become well-regarded and prolific session musicians in Jamaica and you might well have heard of them... none other than The Roots Radics.

Review: 1994's original pressing of Steely & Clevie's outstanding leftfield production with Johnny Clarke's vocals is a dub well worth inspecting. Except you might struggle to find one these days, and it will be pricey if you do, because it has become something of a classic 45. Thankfully it gets reissued here with A-side original 'Leggo Violence' rolling lazy drums while the Clarke vocals soar high and sweet despite what they sing about. On the flip is a smooth rolling version that allows that super bassline to do its thing free from any distraction, and all with extra dub goodness.

Review: Sunset's reissue series of Harry J releases continues with this gem from the late, great Freddie McKay's 1986 collaboration with The Jah Apostles, one of the last productions to feature the singer - who seamlessly navigated from the early ska days right up to the digital era - before his untimely death in November of the same year. McKay's soulful vocals ride effortlessly over the Apostles' mesmerising rhythms here, meaning that it is impossible not to be transported listeners to the golden shores of Jamaica at sundown. As is so often with the case with reggae, there's a dubbed out version on the flip - we wouldn't have it any other way.

Review: Reggae collectors may already be aware of 'When You Gonna Stop', a now exceedingly hard to find UK reggae release. It was recorded by Black Slate, one of the most active British reggae bands of the period, under the alternative Jeduthum alias, produced by Robert Fearon, and initially released in 1978 on the short-lived JBC label. It remains a superb slab of conscious, warming and weighty roots reggae, with great performances from the band and an impassioned lead vocal that tends towards the world-weary. Equally as impressive is the flipside 'Stop Ranking Dub', which - as you'd expect - provides a perfect dub-wise interpretation. A genuinely essential reissue.

The first record naturally showcases the original EP, offering us a chance to savour such classics as 'Run Come Rally', the intoxicating and pitched-down brilliance of 'Conquering Lion' and the shoulder-swinging skank of 'Jah Love'. The second record, meanwhile, gathers together rare dubs, versions and alternate takes not featured on the original LP. Review: The Hornin Sounds label invites you to sink deep into a reggae vibe on this superlative 7" from Vin Gordon. Though freshly mastered, the sis actually built on an old instrumental that was dug out of some archives. It was originally played by Fazal Prendergast alongside The High Times Players at the legendary Channel One studio in 1982. Scientist mixed it at King Tubby studio meaning its credentials are unquestionable. Here it is finished with some deadly and devastating trombone from 'Don D Junior.'

Review: Jamaican rocksteady vocal group The Jamaicans linked with Tommy McCook & The Supersonics back in 1967 for this piece of rocksteady gold. The a-side of this reissue comes with the original Treasure Isle-version of the 1967 festival song. It's heavy, love struck, earthy and organic. The super B-side is a remixed version of the A-sides's backing track, but with the addition of some overdubbed percussion and syndrum parts as well as a sweet but uncredited toasting and DJ appearance by Jah Thomas. Both sound as hot and crucial now as they did all those many years ago.

The typically languid, weighty and dub flecked cut is built around a tweaked, replayed version of Coxsone Dodd's legendary 'He Prayed' riddim (a groove that has been used on countless reggae records before and since). Osbourne's lead vocal is typically relaxed and quietly soulful, while the involvement of Scientist on mixing desk duties guarantees more bass-weight and subtle dub inflections than your average roots number. Turn to the flip for a more spaced-out instrumental dub version based around the same riddim recording, with more effects-laden magic from Scientist.

Review: First released in the UK by Tottenham-based Atra Records in 1974, The Black Breast Has Produced Her Best Flesh of My Skin Blood By Blood has long been considered one of the edgiest roots albums of the period and a must-have for serious reggae collectors. The album resulted in its creator, the sadly departed Keith Hudson, being dubbed "the dark prince of reggae". Listening back to this welcome reissue, it's easy to see why. For starters, the lyrical content is highly politically charged and righteous, while Hudson's weighty musical arrangements are far more trippy, hazy and dimly lit than those found on most roots reggae records of the period. This edition also includes three additional tracks not found on the original release, plus exhaustive sleeve notes from Hudson biographer Vincent Ellis.

Review: Over the last four years, Idren Natural's Dubolution-produced 'Jah Garden' - a steppers-powered roots/digi-dub fusion cut featuring a superb lead vocal - has been a dubplate special in Inidica Dubs' DJ sets. It's fitting then that they've finally decided to release it on their own label, with the killer original mix being joined by a trio of tasty dubs. Dubolution's own dub-style version is faithfully weighty and skeletal, while wisely emphasizing his own jazzy guitar licks, while Indica Dubs' flipside revisions are equally as potent. The 'Garden Dubplate Mix' is a punchy, full-throttle dancefloor dub workout, while the 'Raw Dub Mix' sounds like one of Mad Professor's wilder, heavier offerings.

Review: Jah Life dig deep into the vaults for this new 7", which features some previously unreleased tunes. They are voiced by Michael Prophet (the pseudonym of the last Jamaican roots reggae singer Michael Haynes), who did so in the late 80s over a brilliant digital rhythm. He was always known for his crying vocal style and that is well exemplified here on 'In My Heart.' Flip it over and you will find 'Broad Back (dub)', a striped back but still stepping tune with that killer digital vibe shining bright.

Review: The John Collins vaults have been dug deep into for this new 12" on SpeciaL Request. Both of the tunes have been remastered and reissued and were written by the great overs rock maestro John Collins himself. First up is the super sweet and infectiously lumpy rolling reggae of Victor Romero Evans's 'At The Club.' It's a blissed out tune with a fat bottom and silky vocals. On the flip is the much more spaced out and cosmically minded dub, 'Lift Off,' by The Detonators. It's a heady tune that invites you in deep and is perfect for those stoner Sunday sessions.

The band was formed din Kingston, Jamaican and made up of Norman Bailey, Marc Campbell, Claver Campbell and Louis Putman, all of whom bonded over a love of dub and reggae before moving to the US. Review: Mikey Dread was a legend of reggae as a producer, DJ and singer, who gained international fame for working with The Clash on 'Bankrobber' and mixing dub versions for their Black Market Clash and Sandinista! albums. Through his Dread At The Controls label he released reams of incredible dub and roots reggae himself, with World War III surely one of the highlights. With the Roots Radics as the backing band and the likes of Earl Sixteen and Watty Burnett on backing vocals, the cast of characters is steeped in reggae's golden era, and sure enough the sound is as good as you'd expect. This welcome reissue comes on yellow vinyl - a beam of sunshine as uplifting as the riddims carved into the grooves.

Review: The Sound of Thunder label looks back to a deep roots tune by Freddy McKay here. It is a recut version with the French singer and guitar player Yohann Minkoff aka Major Yo. The rhythm is the fine work of The SOA Band and the whole thing was produced by Sound of Thunder with OnlyRoots. The a-side is cheery vibe with buttery vocals and natty chord work. Chakatack's 'Worldwide Dub' is slower, deeper, more roomy. Both of these are vital dub cuts for plenty of summer deployment on big sound systems.

Review: The Liquidator Music crew have been putting out classic Jamaican rhythms ice the mid-cities and still goes strong. This is an all new one from Jamaican act Roy Ellis who sings over his backing band, Cosmic Shuffing, from Switzerland. They are acclaimed in ska and rock steady circles for good reason and help bring these tunes to life. 'Shine Your Light On Me' is an easy going roller with lo-fi drums and dusty riffs that hook you in while Ellis does his work up top. 'Merry-Go-Round' then cuts loose on a summery and swirling vibe with conversational lead trumpets and natty chords.

Review: Recorded at Channel One Recording Studio in Kingston Jamaica and featuring the one and only Sly and Robbie, Innocent Lover was a 1979 classic from Trevor Hartley. Phil Pratt took care of the production and Tommy McCook and Ansel Collins also line-up on what is a super smooth selection of reggae rollers. The production is earthy and organic, with subtle effects fleshing out rach instrumental as Hartley's buttery vocals ring out up top, mostly musing on themes of love, romance and heartbreak.

Review: As the months warm up we all tend to lean towards the warm and fleshy sounds of dub, which makes releases like this one on Newentun all the more crucial. 'Sugarman' is a classic bit of lovers rock with those earthy guitar plucks, big wood block hits and steel drum sounds. The vocal is silky smooth and full of yearning while heat damaged organs and lazy harmonica further flesh things out. The Ska version has a more clipped and swiping rhythm with a great height to it and then the Jonas Sanchez Trombone Version has big fat wind leads that scream summer.
