Spirulina (10")
Cat: UNTYMVMNT 1001. Rel: 28 Apr 21
  1. Aba Ariginal - "Spirulina" (3:24)
  2. Al Unity - "New Roots (Healthy Growth Riddim)" (3:20)
  3. Al Unity - "Dub Spirulina" (3:24)
  4. Al Unity - "Spirulina Dub" (3:17)
Review: Aba-Ariginal is the alias of trumpeter (and Homefront Productions boss) Patrick Anthony Tenyue, whose accomplished musicianship accompanies the uplifting reggae riddims of 'Spirulina', followed by a bunch of versions by Al Unity. Tenyue (aka Matic) has and continues to record with some of the greatest reggae recording artists, and is a sought after musician and producer. His passion is 'dubwise' where he is known for the great brass horns as heard under the Aba Ariginal alias. With his brother Henry 'Buttons' Tenyue, he's worked with every successful reggae act coming out of the UK and Jamaica.

Cup A Tea (7")
Cat: DD 702. Rel: 06 Apr 21
  1. Cup A Tea (3:15)
  2. Cup & Saucer (3:26)
Review: Dillinger's 'Cup Of Tea' album landed back in 1980 and was just one of the many crucial records in the legend's discography. Here the title tune finds him in singing mode, musing over a dub featuring production by the likes of Sly Dunbar, Lloyd Parks and many other. Flip it over for a much more sedated and slowed down dub with a meandering bass line and nice heady chord work. This is s super 7" reissue that is primed and ready to blow up when sound systems get back to action this summer.

Cat: RCK 013. Rel: 06 May 21
  1. Robbie Ellington - "Rainbow" (4:03)
  2. The Herb - "Rainbow" (dub) (4:07)
Review: The Robbie Ellington rhythm 'Rainbow' is taken from the long player The Herb, which was initially released in 1995. Produced by The Herb and mixed by Scruff, it is a real bit of rootsy reggae rock. The bubbling baselines keep you moving while sci-fi effects constantly take off to the skies. The vocal is airy and filled with a smooth soul, too. On the flip, Real Rock include The Herb's dub version, which is all twisted filters, drawn out pads and meon-melting vibes for smoke session and late night get downs.

Chinese Beauty
  1. Lennie Hibbert - "Chinese Beauty" (3:11)
  2. Main Roots - "Plea My Cause" (3:22)
Review: On their latest deep dive into the vast vaults of Jamaica's Studio One Records, Rock A Shacka has unearthed two largely overlooked gems. On the A-side you'll find 'Chinese Beauty' by vibraphonist Lennie Hibbert, which first featured on his 1971 album More Creation. It's a wonderfully relaxed affair in which hazy organ stabs and Hibbert's fluid vibraphone solos solos rise above a languid, early evening riddim. Over on side B you'll find a genuine rarity: the sole single from Coxsone Dodd-produced outfit Main Roots. 'Plea My Case' is a fine harmony vocal number in which the singers plead their case to the Man Upstairs over a slow, chunky, head-nodding roots reggae groove.

Some One Cut It Down
Cat: JFR 722. Rel: 19 Apr 21
  1. Some One Cut It Down (3:59)
  2. Some One Cut It Down (version) (3:57)
Review: 'Some One Cut it Down' is clearly one of Paul Hurlock's favourite compositions, because over the years he's recorded and released a number of versions. This version is, we think, the first he recorded and dates from the turn-of-the-1980s. It was previously only available on a hard-to-find Jamaican "45", so this reissue is more than welcome. In its original form, the song is a lolloping, head-nodding roots reggae treat rich in fizzing Clavinet riffs, meandering synth sounds, sweet vocals and deep bass. The flipside 'Version' mix naturally strips it back and dubs it out considerably, re-casting it as a space-age roots reggae dub with plenty of additional percussion.

  2. Paco Ten - "Beholdub" (7:20)
  3. U Brown - "Work Fi U Own" (3:54)
  4. Billyman - "Work Fi U Dub" (3:54)
Review: You'll find some excellent "versioning" on this offering from Italian imprint Roots Cooperation. It features a quartet of cuts built around the same warm, bubbly, ear-catching and - naturally - sub-heavy digital riddim crafted by producer Rob Gravy. Honey-voiced mic man Anthony Johnson stars on EP opener 'Beholden', offering a slick and soulful delivery of a conscious and thoughtful set of lyrics, before Italian mixer Paco Ten offers up a deliciously weighty and extended dub mix ('Beholdub'). Over on the flip toaster U Brown delivers a deejay style interpretation, rapping in patois atop Rob Gravy's groove, while Billyman reaches for the reverb, echo and tape delay on a ludicrously weighty partner dub.

Institutionalized Racism
  1. Institutionalized Racism (4:02)
  2. Institutionalized Racism (version) (3:19)
Review: Belgium's Roots Vibration label is as reliable as they come for roots lovers and now they wind it back to the nineties for this crucial production by Ossie Thomas. It is one of the less well known tunes from Vivian Jones, but it shouldn't be with its computer-programmed digital drums and horns. They help guide Vivian's tremendously vocals, which muse on institutionalised racism which is just as rife decades later, so this one remains hugely relevant. Add in some heavy drops and you have a gold standard riddim.

  4. Mr Wicked Man (dub) (3:41)
Review: The Mellow Vibes crew serve up more perfect smoking music here with Viivian Jones and Robert Dallas pairing off on a couple of crucial dubs. Singer Jones has roots that go way back to the early eighties and now with the added gravitas of a smoky, deep, gravely vocal tone he has never sounded better. The production pairs clean chords that are bright and reflective with icy drums and plenty of swagger that cannot fail to slow your pulse. The various dubs take the tune in subtly different directions, but all of them hit equally sweetly.

Escape By Night
Cat: CGI 7025. Rel: 19 Apr 21
  1. Escape By Night (3:44)
  2. Escape By Night (version) (4:05)
Review: We're not quite sure whether this King Shark single is brand new or was recorded in the early 2000s, but either way 'Escape By Night' is well worth checking. It features the veteran dancehall and roots reggae singer delivering a typically slick and soulful vocal over a rolling digital-reggae rhythm provided by experienced UK producer Russell Bell-Brown (he of the Disciplines fame). Bell-Brown's backing track is ear-pleasing and musically breezy, with a killer bassline and piano stabs being joined by some seriously jazzy electro guitar solos. If anything, the echoing, spacious and weighty flipside 'Version' dub is even better, with Bell-Brown doing a passable impression of Scientist or Mad Professor.

  4. Joe 9000 Dub - "Rioting Dub" (4:08)
Review: Joe 9000 Dub Records made a successful debut last year and has since put out a crucial follow up. The third missive from the label is from debutant Poyzun, who links with the eponymous Joe 9000 Dub for two killer hits that come, of course, with dubs. Jah Great is stripped back but effective, with a rolling drum line and fat bass, as well as some well delivered patois vocals. The same tune gets a heavy dub mix that is primed for sound system action and then 'Riot Dub' is a different vibe. It has pens, soulful leads bringing light to a more delicate and icy cold dub that has rattling hits and far sighted get that it's easy to get lost in.

  3. Willi Williams - "Armagideon Time" (6:25)
Review: Dub Vendor has launched a new label, Soul Sounds. The imprint's first release is a new edition of Willi Williams' 1983 single 'Freedom Time', an unheralded roots classic built around Yabby You's iconic 'Chant Down Babylon' rhythm. The A-side sports two killer versions mixed by Scientist at King Tubby's: Williams' original, featuring his weary but quietly uplifting vocals, and a typically echoing, stripped-back and spaced-out dub. Over on the flip there's a chance to savour Williams' self-produced '83 re-make of his earlier Studio One classic 'Armagideon Time' - a warmer and more lo-fi take marked out by another superb lead vocal.
