Heartical Respect
Cat: CGI 12009. Rel: 07 Oct 20
  1. Heartical Respect (3:36)
  2. Sounds For All (Dubspect) (3:43)
Review: The late, great Sugar Minott apparently recorded 'Heartical Respect' back in the mid-1980s with dancehall producers George Bell and Priest, though this is the first time it has officially been released. Minott's slick, soulful and rootsy voice is the perfect accompaniment to the track's punchy dancehall drums, sub-heavy bassline, clipped guitars, dark synth-strings and piano stabs. It's a fine track, all told, and it seems remarkable that it has remained unissued - or at least in the UK - for so long. The flipside dub-style 'Version' is naturally rather good too, with Bell and Priest eschewing Minott's vocal in favour of even weightier sub-bass and tougher dancehall drums.

Jah Say Love
Cat: JFR 713. Rel: 08 Oct 20
  1. Jah Say Love (3:13)
  2. Jah Say Love (version) (3:05)
Review: Two Plus One was an obscure mid 1970s project from twins Keith and Kenneth Thompson, who also recorded - perhaps more famously - as The Twin Roots. 'Jah Say Love' was recorded and released in limited numbers in Jamaica during that period, though this is the first time that the superb roots reggae cut has been made available to a wider audience. Languid, Hammond-heavy and soulful with the pair singing a message of love over a Lee 'Scratch' Perry style riddim, it's well worth your attention. As you'd expect, it comes backed by a heavy dub 'Version' mix. Its' skeletal, groove focused sections are impressively weighty and as spaced-out as they come.

  14. Audrey - "You'll Loose A Good Thing" (2:41)
Review: Since launching late last year, Harlem Shuffle Records has reissued a string of killer reggae recordings from the 1960s and 70's. Here the imprint offers up its first compilation, a 14-track selection of early reggae, dub and rocksteady hand-picked from the vaults of such legendary labels as Black Swan, Blue Cat, Duke, Doctor Bird, High Note and Trojan. It's a fine and hugely entertaining collection all told, with highlights including the easy, laidback skank of Stranger & Patsy's 'Tell it to Me', the trumpet-laden instrumental shuffle of 'Walk With Des' by Des All Stars, the Hammond-powered dancefloor heaviness of Clancy Collins' 'Brother Moses' and the prototype dub brilliance of 'Black Out' by the Hardy Boys.
