12dB multi-mode filter with unique classic circuitry, based on the filter from the 70s EDP Wasp synth
Notes: Module A-124 is a special 12dB multimode filter using the "strange" filter circuit of the "EDP Wasp" (an analog synthesizer with black/yellow case built end of the seventies, manufactured by the UK company "Electronic Dream Plant" with Chris Huggett und Adrian Wagner). This design "abuses" digital inverters as analog operational amplifiers leading to distortions and other "dirty" effects that generate the specific sound of this filter. The filter is equipped with a band pass output and a combined low/notch/high pass output. For this output a control knob defines the relation between low and high pass signal. If both signals appear at the same level (i.e. middle position of the Mix knob) one obtains a notch filter. Otherwise the low or high pass signal predominates. The module does not feature self-oscillation in contrast to most of the other filters of the A-100 system.

Inputs: Audio In, CV In (2x)
Outputs: Bandpass Out, Low/Highpass Mix-Out
Controls: Audio and CV attenuator, Frequency, Resonance, LP/HP Mix

The function and operation of this module is very similar to the module SEM VCF A-106-5. But the sound of both filters is very different! The only functional difference is the position of the sockets and controls, and the function of the controls CV2 (A-124: normal attenuator, A-106-5: polarizer).

- 3U Eurorack module, 8HP wide, 45mm deep
- Current draw 30mA

Envelope generator with CV outputs for modulation - 8HP
Notes: Module A-140 is an envelope generator, and, since it puts out control voltages, counts as one of the modulation devices in a modular system. As soon as the gate input receives sufficient voltage, the ADSR generates a variable voltage, changing in time, called an envelope. This varying voltage is output in normal (positive) and inverted form, and can be used, eg. for voltage controlled modulation of a VCO, VCF, or VCA, or for processing other modules' inputs and outputs.

The shape of the envelope is governed by four parameters: Attack, Decay, Sustain and Release.

The envelope is started (triggered) by a gate signal either from the INT.GATE voltage on the system bus, or, if a signal is put into it, from the gate input socket.

The envelope can also be re-triggered, i.e. start from scratch again, each time a trigger signal is sensed at the Retrig. input socket, when the gate is still open.

Module A-140 has available a three-position toggle switch to select one of three time ranges. The envelope duration ranges from about 50us (microseconds) up to several minutes.

In combination with the Comparator module A-167 a free-running "ADSR-LFO" can be realized.

Envelope follower & pre-amplifier for microphone/line-signals - 8HP
Notes: Module A-119 (External Input / Envelope Follower) is designed to allow external audio signals to be integrated into the System A-100. It comprises a pre-amp, envelope follower, and comparator.

The pre-amp has two inputs: an unbalanced input for line level signals, with a gain factor of from 0 to 20, and a balanced input with a gain factor of from 0 to 500, for insertion of low level signals, for instance from a microphone or electric guitar.

The Envelope Follower reads the signal level of the input, and puts out a proportional voltage as an envelope at its own output.

The comparator generates a gate signal whenever the input goes above an adjustable trigger threshold.

Three LED's help you keep track of overload, the envelope, and the gate signal.

High-quality low-cost Doepfer Eurorack case with power
Notes: This is the 3U version of the low cost cases A-100LC6/LC9. The A-100LC3 is very similar to the A-100LC6 but offers only one row with 84 HP for installation of modules. A-100LC3 is equipped with one power supply (1200mA) and one bus board. Because of the limited space the power supply of the DIY-Kit #1 with an external transformer is used (same as for the DIY-Kit #1: 15V AC/2500mA). At the left side of the case the connector for the external transformer is located. The external transformer is not shown in the pictures. A suitable transformer for the US market is manufactured by Triad Magnetics and has the product name WAU16-2400 (16V AC / 2.4A). It is available from several electronic shops like Mouser, Digikey, Newark, Farnell and others.

The case is made of raw wood without laquering. The case can be varnished by the customer in any desired colour e.g. by means of a spray can.

Doepfer A-160-5 Voltage Controlled Clock Multiplier & Ratcheting Controller Module Doepfer A-160-5 Voltage Controlled Clock Multiplier & Ratcheting Controller Module Doepfer A-160-5 Voltage Controlled Clock Multiplier & Ratcheting Controller Module
Cat: 745787 Rel: 10 Sep 19 • View all Synth modules

Voltage-controlled clock multiplier with CV or manual control - 4HP
Notes: Module A-160-5 is a voltage controlled clock multiplier. The incoming clock signal (socket Clock In) is multiplied by a factor that depends upon the control voltage on socket CV In (0...+5V) and the position of the Mode switch. The multiplied clock signal is available at the socket Clock Out. According to the position of the Mode switch different clock multiplying factors are assigned to the control voltage. With 0V CV no clock output is generated. This state is indicated by "all LEDs off". With increasing CV integer factors (left position of the mode switch), power of two factors (middle position) or a mix of both (right position) are obtained. Nine LEDs are used to show the currently selected multiplying factor. In addition two LEDs are used to display the incoming and outgoing clock signal.

A manual control is used to adjust the clock multiplication factor manually without the need of an external control voltage. The voltage generated by this control ("Manual") is normalled to the CV In socket. As long as no plug is inserted into the CV In socket the clock multiplication factor is adjusted by means of the manual control knob and displayed by the LEDs. For dynamic applications (like the ratcheting function described below) the manually generated CV is overwritten by the external CV which has to be fed into the CV In socket.

The module can be used for all kind of clock multiplying applications. One important example is the generation of so-called ratcheting sequences. The band Tangerine Dream is famous for this kind of sequences. A normal sequencer generates only one gate signal per step. A ratcheting sequence may have also more than one gate pulses per step. This function can be obtained by using the A-160-5: one CV output of the sequencer is used to define the number of gate pulses per step. If the control of the step in question is fully CCW the generated CV is 0V and no gate signal is generated (mute of the step). When the control of the step in question is turned clockwise one, two or more gate pulses are generated depending upon the position of the mode switch and the voltage generated by the CV at this step.

Technical note: Due to the nature of clock multiplying it takes a few input clock pulses until the clock output is stable. One has to average a few input clock pulses to generate the multiplied clock output signal. Even when the input clock frequency changes it will take a few cycles until the output clock signal is correct as the module cannot foresee the future of the clock input signal. The generated clock output signal is derived from the last few cycles of the clock input signal. Consequently the module should be driven only by a clock signal with constant or slowly changing frequency.

Enhanced clock divider with multiple dividing factors - 4HP
Notes: Module A-160-2 is an enhanced version of the standard clock divider A-160. The module is a frequency divider for clock/trigger/gate signals, designed to be a source of lower frequencies, particularly for rhythm uses. The Clock input will take any digital signal from, eg. LFO, MIDI sync, or the gate from a MIDI-CV interface. At the outputs, you have access to three sets of seven different sub-divided clock signals, from half the clock frequency down to 1/128. The low/high levels of the output signals are 0V and about +10V.

The A-160-2 also has a reset input. Whenever a reset signal is sensed, all outputs are set to certain levels which depend upon the selected mode.

These are the most important features of the module:

Three different sets of dividing factors, selected by a three-position switch at the front panel:
- Power of two: 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128
- Prime numbers: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17
- Integer: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8

Two output modes, selected by a two-position switch at the front panel:
- Gate mode: outputs act like the outputs of typical binary dividers
- Trigger mode: in this mode the outputs are AND-wired with the clock signal (i.e. the clock pulsewidth affects the pulsewidth of the outputs)
- Clock edge type selected by a jumper on the pc board:
- Positive: the rising edge of the clock signal triggers the state change of the outputs
- Negative: the falling edge of the clock signal triggers the state change of the outputs

Reset behaviour by two jumpers on the pc board:
- Level triggered: the level at the Reset input triggers the Reset
- Edge triggered: the edge of the signal at the Reset input triggers the Reset
- Positive: a high level (> 2.5V) or the rising edge at the Reset input triggers the Reset
- Negative: a low level (< 1 V) or the falling edge at the Reset input triggers the Reset

Output polarity selected by a jumper on the pc board:
- Positive: non-inverted outputs
- Negative: all seven outputs are inverted

Width: 4HP / 20mm
Depth: 35mm (Measured from the rear side of the front panel)
Current: +12V: +50mA, -12V: -0mA

Doepfer A-130-2 Dual Linear & Exponential VCA Module
Cat: 731940 Rel: 11 Jun 19 • View all Synth modules

Compact two-channel VCA - 4HP
Notes: Module A-130-2 is the slim version of module A-132-3 and offers essentially the same features. But the distances between the controls are smaller and rubberized small-sized knobs are used. In return the front panel has 4 HP only which is half the width of the A-132-3. The module is primarily planned for applications where only limited space is available.

The module is composed of two identical voltage controlled amplifiers (VCA). Each VCA has a manual gain control (also named Initial Gain) and a control voltage input with attenuator. The character of the control scale can be switched to linear or exponential. All inputs and outputs are DC coupled. Consequently the VCAs can be used to process both audio and control voltages (e.g. for voltage control of the level of LFO or envelope signals). The signal input has no attenuator available but is capable to process up to 16Vpp signals (i.e. -8V...+8V) without distortion. For the processing of higher levels an external attenuator (e.g. A-183-1) is recommended.

The amplification range is 0...1. Even with a higher external control voltage the amplification remains at 1 (kind of "amplification clipping" at 1).

Controls (for each of both units):

- Gain: manual gain control (Initial Gain) in the range 0...1
- CV: attenuator for the CV input
- Lin/Exp: switches the VCA characteristic to linear or exponential, in center position the VCA is off (mute function)

Inputs and outputs (for each of both units):

- CV: control voltage input, min. +5V required for max. amplification (1) with CV control fully CW and Gain fully CCW
- In: signal input, max. 16Vpp (+8V...-8V) without distortion
- Out: signal output

12dB multi-mode filter - 8HP
Notes: Module A-106-5 is a 12dB multimode filter that is based on the filter circuit of the Oberheim SEM module.

The module generates a distorted audio signal if the level control is set to about 50% (i.e. centre position) or more with A-100 standard signals like VCOs.

Doepfer A-140v ADSR Envelope Generator Module (vintage edition)
Cat: 738617 Rel: 10 Jul 19 • View all Synth modules

Versatile module that can also be used as a modulation device - 8HP
Notes: Module A-140-1 is an envelope generator, and, since it puts out control voltages, counts as one of the modulation devices in a modular system.

The time ratios for the three ranges are about 1 : 20 : 1000. The absolute Attack times are about:

20uS ... 100ms (switch position L)
400uS ... 2s (switch position M)
20ms ... 120s (switch position H)
The Decay and Release times are about 3-4 times more. Because of the exponential slope and the gradual asymptotic approach to the zero level the exact specification of the decay and real times is a bit difficult.

The voltage ranges of the ADSR outputs are about 0 ... +8V for the two normal outputs and 0 ... -8V for the inverted output.

In combination with the Comparator module A-167 a free-running "ADSR-LFO" can be realized.

Doepfer A-130-8 Octal Linear VCA Module
Cat: 765896 Rel: 28 Jul 20 • View all Synth modules

linear VCA module
Notes: Lots of functionality in a compact format thanks to Doepfer's typically smart approach. Eight linear VCAs with three mixers built in for good measure. Can be used for both audio and CV signals. Versatile.

Supplier notes:
Module A-130-8 contains eight linear voltage controlled amplifiers (VCAs). Each VCA features a control voltage input (CV), a signal input (In) and a signal output (Out). In addition three mixers are included: the socket labelled "1-4" outputs the sum of the VCAs 1-4, the socket labelled "5-8" outputs the sum of the VCAs 5-8, the socket labelled "1-8" outputs the sum of all eight VCAs.

The signal inputs are able to process levels up to 10Vpp without clipping. Each CV input is equipped with a trimming potentiometer that is used to adjust the sensitivity of the CV input in question. In the factory the module is adjusted for the CV range 1...+5V but can be re-adjusted by the user for other control voltage ranges (e.g. 0...+10V).

The amplification range for each single VCA is 0...1. The signals of the sum outputs have a lower amplification to avoid distortion.

The VCAs and mixers are fully DC coupled, i.e. the module can be used for the processing of both audio and control voltage signals. The control voltage and signal inputs can be normalled by means of small solder pads (e.g. 1 > 2 > 3 > 4 and so on, or 1 > 5, 2 > 6, 3 > 7, 4 > 8 for the stereo application mentioned below).

Typical applications:
any kind of VCA application (e.g. voltage controlled attenuation of audio or control voltage signals)

Four identical voltage controlled amplifiers with exponential control scales - 6HP
Notes: Module A-132-4 contains four identical voltage controlled amplifiers (VCA) with exponential control scales. Each VCA has two control voltage inputs (C1, C2), a signal input (In) and a signal output (Out). The control voltage inputs C1 and the signal inputs can be normalled by means of internal jumpers, i.e. the corresponding input signals of unit #1 can be connected to the switching contacts of unit #2. Those of unit #2 can be normalled to unit #3 and those of unit #3 to unit #4. If the normalling is not desired the jumpers have to be removed. In addition the sum of all four outputs is available (bottom left socket with the sum sign). Therefore unit #4 has only one control voltage input (only C1, no C2). If desired this socket can be jumpered as control voltage input 2. But then the sum signal is no longer available as a socket (only as an internal pin). For each VCA output a jumper is available that determines if the output signal of the corresponding VCA is added to the sum signal. From the factory all four jumpers are set (i.e. all four VCA output signals are added). By removing of one or more of the jumpers one can choose which VCA output is added to the sum. The jumpers can be replaced by switches too.

Technical notes:

The control scale for each VCA is about 12dB/V (i.e. 1 V CV decrease corresponds to 12dB level decrease and 1 V CV increase corresponds to 12dB level increase). 0V CV corresponds to about -60dB (i.e. about attenuation by 1000). +5V CV corresponds to about 0dB (i.e. no attenuation or amplification = 1). The full attenuation/amplification range is about -90dB ... + 20dB. Attenuations below -60dB require a negative control voltage, amplifications beyond 0dB require a control voltage more than +5V. For the first CV input of each unit (CV1) an internal trimming potentiometer (attenuator) is available to adjust the control scale for other voltage ranges (e.g. 0...+8V for A-140 envelope control or 0...+10V for external 10V control voltages). To obtain another CV scale even for CV2 an attenuator (e.g. A-183-1) can be used. If an amplification offset is required (e.g. for zero-symmetrical control voltages like LFO) an external offset generator with attenuator/polarizer (e.g. A-183-2) is recommended.

The A-132-4 uses a circuit with four exponential VCAs (SSM2164/V2164). Unfortunately there is no easy way to obtain a linear scale for the VCAs (actually two exponential VCAs are required to obtain a linear VCA, that's how e.g. the A-132-1 and A-132-3 work).

3-way logic module featuring two internal signal inverters - 8HP
Notes: Dual logic module with 3 inputs for each unit. The logical states of the inputs ("1" = high / "0" = low) are linked together in 3 ways: AND, OR, EXOR (exclusive OR). The three functions are available simultaneously at three outputs with LED display of the output states.

Additionally, two inverters are available to obtain the inverted functions NAND, NOR and NEXOR. The sockets of each triple unit are "normalized", i.e. the switched contact of socket 2 is connected to input 1 and the switched contact of socket 3 is connected to input 2. Provided that no plug is inserted into socket 1 resp. socket 2 the socket is connected to the input above it. This simplifies the usage of the module when only 2 signals are combined, e.g. the logic functions AND and OR have different neutral input levels ("1" is the neutral state for AND, "0" is the neutral state for OR).

In case of a fixed input level for the unused input one of the functions (AND or OR) would work no longer.

Applications: combination of digital signals of the A-100 (e.g. gates, clocks, triggers), e.g. to obtain "gated" clocks or certain rhythmic patterns.

Pair of multicore signal connectors
Notes: A-180-9 is another simple but useful tool. It can be used to connect up to 14 signals between different cases by means of standard network cables (RJ45). These cables are available all over world smoothly in different lengths and colours. From the factory two black network cables with 0.5 m length are enclosed.

The upper network connector is wired to the eight sockets 1-8, the lower to the six sockets A-F. That way it's possible to pre-patch different cases and connect signals, that are required in all cases (e.g. clock, start/stop, master CV) by means of one or two cables only instead of 14 individual patch cables. When only eight signals are required only the upper network connector is required and the sockets 1-8 are used. When more than eight signals have to be patched both network connectors have to be used. It's also possible to wire the upper and lower network to different cases (i.e. signals 1-8 to external case #1 and signals A-F to external case#2).

The module is fully passive (no power supply required) and simply wires the 14 sockets to 14 pins of the network connectors.

The A-180-9 comes in pairs for combining two modular systems.

Notes: A-138s is a simple but useful 4-in-2 mixing tool. It has four inputs available. Each input is equipped with an attenuator (Level) and a panning control that is used to distribute the signal to the left and right output. Beyond stereo mixing it is equally suited to create variable parallel routings. For example: Any of the four inputs may be routed in variable intensity to feed two filters.

You may regard the A-138s as a smaller version of the A-138m Matrix Mixer.

Doepfer A-118-2 Noise, Random, T&H, S&H Module
Cat: 731938 Rel: 10 Jun 19 • View all Synth modules

Noise/random generator - 4HP
Notes: Module A-118-2 is the slim version of module A-118-1 and offers essentially the same features as the A-118-1. But the distances between the controls are smaller and rubberized small-sized knobs are used. In return the front panel has 4 HP only which is half the width of the A-118-1. The module is primarily planned for applications where only limited space is available. The functional difference between A-118-1 and A-118-2 is the additional T&H/S&H unit which is not included in the A-118-1.

The module generates the signals white noise, coloured noise, continuous random voltage and stepped random voltage (derived from the continuous random voltage by means of a S&H/T&H unit).

The noise signal is generated 100% analogue by amplification of the noise of a transistor. White and coloured noise are usually used as audio sources. The random voltages are normally used as control voltages (e.g. for filter frequency or any other voltage controlled parameter).

The A-118-2 gives you the ability to mix the relative amounts of Red (low frequency component) and Blue noise (high frequency component) in the coloured noise output.

For the continuous random voltage the rate of change (Rate) and amplitude (Level) of the random voltage can be adjusted. The continuous random voltage is derived from the coloured noise signal by low pass filtering. Consequently the settings of the controls for the coloured noise (Blue, Red) affect the behaviour of the random voltage! A dual colour LED (red = positive / yellow = negative output voltage) indicates the continuous random voltage.

The continuous random voltage is used as source for the S&H/T&H unit. The type of operation can be set to S&H (sample and hold) or T&H (track and hold). When T&H is chosen the output signal follows the input signal (= continuous random voltage) as long as the Clock input is "high". As soon as the clock signal changes to "low" the last voltage is stored. When S&H is chosen the input signal (= continuous random voltage) is sampled at the rising edge of the Clock signal.

For the Clock signal a "digital" signal (e.g. Clock, Gate, rectangle output of an LFO) is required. It does not work with slowly changing continuous CV signals. Another dual colour LED (red = positive / yellow = negative output voltage) indicates the stepped random voltage.

Doepfer A-145-4 Quad LFO Low Frequency Oscillator Module
Cat: 731949 Rel: 10 Jun 19 • View all Synth modules

Quad low frequency oscillator - 4HP
Notes: Module A-145-4 is a simple quad LFO (Low Frequency Oscillator). Not a very "exciting" module, just a bread-and-butter device and a simple demon for work. Virtually in every modular system several LFOs are required for modulation purposes. The module contains four simple LFOs with the waveforms triangle and rectangle. A dual colour LED (red = positive / yellow = negative output voltage) indicates the triangle output of each LFO. The frequency range can be chosen for each LFO individually by means of a jumper between about 50 Hz ... 0.04 Hz (about 20 seconds, jumper removed) and about 2Hz ... 0.002 (about 8 minutes, jumper installed).

The module can be treated as a slimmed version of the quad LFO A-143-3 as it has similar features available. But the distances between the controls are smaller and rubberized small-sized knobs are used. In return the front panel has 4 HP only which is less than one third of the A-143-3. The module is primarily planned for applications where only limited space is available. The functional difference compared to the A-143-3 are the missing sawtooth outputs and frequency range switches.

Doepfer A-143-2 Quad ADSR Module
Cat: 577755 Rel: 09 Jul 20 • View all Synth modules

Quad ADSR envelope generator synth module, 26HP wide
Notes: The A-143 series of modules contain multiple modulation sources. Module A-143-2 is a four-fold ADSR type envelope generator. Other modules of this series are the Complex Envelope Generator A-143-1 (Quad AD) and the Quad LFO A-143-3.

The module contains 4 independent ADSR-type envelope generators. Each sub-module has available the controls Attack, Decay, Sustain and Release. The three-position Range switch allows to select the desired time range (low - high - medium). The adjustable envelope time ranges from several minutes to some milliseconds. On top of this each sub-module is equipped with three digital outputs (high/low): "End of Attack (EOA)", "End of Decay (EOD)" and "End of Release (EOR)". As soon as the criterion is valid (e.g. end of decay state) the corresponding digital outputs turns to "high". These outputs can be used e.g. to daisy-chain several ADSR sub-modules. For this the digital output in question (EOA, EOD or EOR) has to be connected to the Gate input of the following ADSR. Even automatically running envelopes (pseudo LFOs) or so-called "quadrature envelopes" with cyclical modulations of several ring-shaped, daisy-chained ADSRs are possible. To obtain a pseudo LFO simply the EOD or EOR output has to be connected to the Gate input of the same ADSR.

In addition to the obligatory Gate (G) input for envelope generators each sub-module has available a Retrigger (Rt) input. The retrigger turns the direction to "upward" if the envelope has already reached the decay state while the retrigger pulse occurs. If the envelope is still in the attack phase the retrigger input has no meaning. This a different behaviour from A-140 and A-141!

The Gate inputs of the units 2, 3 and 4 are normalled to the Gate input of unit 1, i.e. Gate input 1 is connected to the switching contacts of the Gate input sockets 2, 3 and 4. Thus one Gate signal applied to Gate input 1 can be used to trigger all four sub-modules simultaneously.

The envelope outputs are displayed with LEDs.

The maximal envelope voltage (Attack/Decay reversal point) is about +8V.

If voltage control of all parameters is required module A-141 is available.

Compact module for attenuating control voltage signals - 4HP
Notes: Module A-183-2 is a voltage offset generator combined with an attenuator/polarizer.

This is how the A-183-2 works: At the two output sockets (simply two connected sockets) appears a DC voltage that is adjusted with the Offset control in the range 0...+5V or -5V...+5V. An internal jumper is used to select the offset range (0...+5V or -5V...+5V). Other ranges are possible by changing a resistor on the pc board (e.g. 0...+10V or -10V...+10V). The DC voltage generated by the Offset control is overlaid by the attenuated voltage that is fed to the In socket. The function of the attenuator control can be set to Attenuator or Polarizer by means of a toggle switch. When the switch is in the Attenuator position the control works as an usual attenuator, i.e. zero level at the fully CCW position and max. level and the fully CW position. When the switch is in the Polarizer position the control works as a polarizer, i.e. zero level appears at the centre position. Right from the centre position the In signal is added to the offset voltage, left from the centre position the In signal is subtracted from the offset voltage. In other words: at the fully CW position the non-inverted In signal is added with the full level to the offset voltage, at the fully CCW position the inverted In signal is added with the full level to the offset voltage.

The amplification range for the input is about 0...+1 in the attenuator mode, and -1...+1 in the polarizer mode. The amplification range can be modified by replacing a resistor by another value.

Applications:

Generation of adjustable DC voltages overlaid by control voltages with adjustable level and polarity to control other modules that do not have attenuators or offset controls, e.g. Sampler A-112 (mainly for the wavetable mode), dual VCA A-132-1, VCLFO A-147-2 for waveshaping and ring modulator applications, Quantizer A-156, Theremin A-178, CV-to-Midi interface A-192 and modules of other manufacturers).

Precision adder (mixer) and buffer for control voltages - 6HP
Notes: Module A-185-2 is a precision control voltage adder/buffer. Precision means that the amplification of the inputs without attenuators is exactly 1.00 and is suitable to add control voltages for the pitch control of VCOs (e.g. from keyboard + sequencer 1 + sequencer 2). Summing resistors matched to 0.1% are used to obtain an accuracy of 0.1% for the added voltages.

The module is equipped with four CV inputs: one with attenuator and three without attenuator. Each input is normalled to +1 V (i.e. if no plug is inserted the input contributes 1 V to the sum appearing at the output).

The input with attenuator can be used for common modulations (e.g. from an LFO, ADSR, Theremin, Pitch-Bender) for all VCOs connected to the output. The Lev.1 control is used to adjust the depth of the modulation, the first switch selects the polarity of the modulation. If no signal is connected to the first socket the attenuator works as a (fine) tuning knob because a voltage in the range 0...+1V (right position of the switch) or 0...-1V (left position of the switch) is added to the CV output.

The inputs without attenuators are planned to add control voltages coming out of keyboards, sequencers, Midi-to-CV interfaces, ribbon controllers or other CV sources that follow the 1V/oct standard. For example the CV of a keyboard can be used to transpose the CV coming from a sequencer, or the CV of a slow sequencer can be used to transpose the CV from a fast sequencer.

Each input is equipped with a three-position switch that determines if the corresponding voltage is added (right position), subtracted (left position) or if the input has no effect (centre position). If no plug is inserted the corresponding switch works as an octave switch for the lower three sections as the default 1 V are added or subtracted to the output voltage according to the switch position. The first switch can be used to add a variable voltage to the sum output. The variable voltage is adjusted with the Lev.1 control and the knob works then as kind of a (fine) tuning control.

The module is equipped with 4 outputs: three non-inverting and one inverting ouput. An internal jumper can be used to connect the non-inverted or inverted output to the CV line of the A-100 bus. That way the module can used to control several VCOs that are connected to the same bus board as the A-185-2 (same functionality as A-185-1).

Classic voltage controlled phase shifter - 8HP
Notes: Module A-125 (VC Phaser) is a voltage controlled phase shifter. Phase shifting can be controlled either manually or by voltage control. Other parameters which can be controlled are resonance (governing the depth of the comb filtering, and tonal colour) and mix (the amount of the original signal which is added to the phase-shifted signal). The A-125 is used to generate the typical phaser sound ("jet sound"). Due to the voltage control feature not only the usual LFO-controlled phasings but even ADSR-, random-, sequencer- or S&H-controlled phasings are possible. In combination with the Shepard generator A-191 and several A-125 never ending barberpole phasing effects come true.

Basic voltage-controlled oscillator for the A-100 modular system
Notes: Module A-110-2 is a low-cost voltage-controlled oscillator. It's a slightly reduced version of the standard VCO A-110-1. Compared to the A-110-1, the A-110-2 has no sine output and the (expensive) octave rotary switch is replaced by a 3-position toggle switch. In return, the A-110-2 is equipped with an additional linear FM input and a soft sync input. A jumper is used to select the range of the tune control between about 1/2 octave and about 4 octaves. The width of the module is only 8 HP compared to the 10 HP of the A-110-1.

All other features are essentially the same as for the A-110-1.

Explanation of the jumpers and trimming potentiometers:

- JP2: CV connection to A-100 bus
- JP3: range of Tune control (installed = about 4 octaves, not installed = about 1/2 octave)
- JP4: AC/DC coupling of the linear FM input (installed = DC coupling, not installed = AC coupling)
- P5: 1V/Oct scale
- P6: frequency offset
- P7: high-end trim
- P8: adjustment +1 Oct. range switch
- P9: adjustment -1 Oct. range switch
- P10: temperature VCO heater

The core of the A-110-2 is - like the A-110-1 - a sawtooth oscillator (in contrast to the A-111-1, which is based on a triangle oscillator). The other waveforms are derived from the sawtooth by waveform converters. As the sawtooth reset (i.e. the back-to-zero slope) is not infinitely fast but takes a little bit of time the triangle is not perfect! At the bottom of the waveform it has a small glitch or notch that is caused by the sawtooth reset and cannot be eliminated by the waveform converter. If a perfect triangle is required, the A-111-1 is recommended.

The sawtooth output of the A-110-21 has a falling (or negative) slope. The front panel shows erroneously a rising (or positive) slope. This has no influence on the sound but becomes important when the module is used as an LFO or is mixed with the sawtooth output of another VCO.

The control voltage applied to the socket 1V/Oct is added to the control voltage coming from the bus (interruptible by removing the jumper JP2). Connecting a cable to the socket 1V/Oct does not interrupt the bus CV connection!

Thru-zero quadrature VCO with Sine/Cosine core - special edition
Notes: This analogue VCO is well versed in the art of deep and beautiful thru-zero frequency modulation, allowing the frequency to stop when CVs with 0V are applied, and even to go backwards when modulated with negative CVs.

The term "quadrature" refers to simultaneously available sine and cosine waves at individual outputs. The VCO is sine based i.e. no waveshaping is used to derive the sine; for that reason, the sound is really clear and shows a minimum of distortion and overtones.

The module has two control sections:

The exponential section consists of the XTune control, the 1V/Oct input and the XFM input with the corresponding attenuator XFM.

The exponential control voltage is the sum of these three voltages. The linear section consists of the LTune control and the LFM input with the corresponding attenuator LFM. The linear control voltage is the sum of these two voltages.

The main advantage of the A-110-4 compared to other Thru Zero VCOs is that the design uses a sine/cosine core. The sine/cosine waves are not derived from other waveforms (e.g. sawtooth or triangle) by means of waveshaping. Rather the sine and cosine waves are the core of the VCO which results in very pure waves with a minimum of distortion and overtones.

With it's both control possibilities, linear and exponential, as well as it's thru-zero ability, the VCO is perfectly suited for all types of FM applications.

Doepfer Dark Energy 3 Semi Modular Analogue Monophonic Desktop Synthesizer
Cat: 676098 Rel: 04 Apr 18 • View all Synthesisers

Fully analogue, monophonic stand-alone synthesiser with USB & MIDI interface
Notes: Third-gen version of Doepfer's brilliant semi-modular synth. A very capable synth in its own right but comes alive when used as the starting point for a Eurorack setup.

Supplier's notes:
The Dark Energy III is a monophonic stand-alone synthesizer with USB and MIDI interface. The sound generation and all modulation sources are 100% analog, only the USB/MIDI interface contains digital components. It is built into a rugged black metal case with wooden side plates. High quality potentiometers with metal shafts are used and each potentiometer is fixed to the case (no wobbly shafts and knobs). The distance between the controls is wider compared to A-100 modules, and knobs with vintage look are used.

Doepfer say that the main differences between II and III are an improved VCO (no warm-up period, additional triangle waveform, wider frequency range), resettable LFOs, improved ADSR and a lot of internal access points for DIYers.

Doepfer A-183-9 Quad USB Power Supply Module Doepfer A-183-9 Quad USB Power Supply Module Doepfer A-183-9 Quad USB Power Supply Module

Simple power supply for up to four devices - 2HP
Notes: Module A-183-9 is a simple power supply for up to four devices which can be powered via USB (e.g. keyboards, smartphones). An LED shows is the +5V are present.

The module has no USB function but provides only the +5V supply for USB devices.

A control LED shows if the +5V are present.

Note: The module requires an A-100 case with built in power supply A-100PSU3. Only this A-100 supply has the required +5V available. We do not recommend the usage of an older A-100 case with A-100PSU2 as this would require the +5V adapter A-100AD5 and the max. current would be limited to 100mA.

Doepfer A-135-2 Quad VCA & VC Mixer Module Doepfer A-135-2 Quad VCA & VC Mixer Module Doepfer A-135-2 Quad VCA & VC Mixer Module

Compact voltage-controlled four-channel audio mixer - 8HP
Notes: A-135-2 is a miniature version of the A-135-1. Behind a front panel with 8 HP only four linear VCAs (voltage controlled amplifiers) and a voltage controlled mixer based on the VCAs are available.

Controls, In/Outputs and Functions of each VCA:

- Level (manual control of the VCA amplification), small rubberized knob (L1...L4)
- Control voltage input with associated attenuator (CV1...CV4), for the full VCA control range about 0...+5V control voltage are required (attenuator fully clockwise), for higher control voltages the attenuator is used, the attenuators are without knobs, just plastic shafts with white marker
- Signal Input
- Signal Output
- All inputs and outputs are DC coupled. Consequently the VCAs can be used to process both audio and control voltages (e.g. to control the level of LFOs or envelopes)
- The signal input is not equipped with an attenuator. But the VCAs can process all signals up to 15Vpp / -7.5...+7.5V without clipping. In case of higher levels an external attenuator is required (e.g. A-183-1).
- The available amplification range is 0...1, the maximal amplification is 1 (i.e. it "clips" and remains at 1 even if the control voltage goes beyond the value that corresponds to amplification 1)

Functions of the voltage controlled mixers:

- Two outputs ("Selected" and "All")
- Selected output: the ouput if a VCA is removed from this sum signal when a plug is inserted into the corresponding VCA output.
- All output: sum of all VCA outputs, regardless of inserted plugs into the VCA outputs
- The maximal amplification is about 0.6 to avoid clipping at the mixer outputs (otherwise the outputs may distort with 15Vpp signals at each signal input and full amplifications)

Special functions of the voltage controlled mixers (selectable by internal jumpers):

- Dual Stereo VCA: In this case the control unit of VCA1 (L1 + CV1) affects also VCA3 and the control unit of VCA2 (L2 + CV2) affects also VCA4, the control units of VCA2 and VCA4 are out of operation
- Quad VCA: In this case the control unit of VCA1 (L1 + CV1) affects all four VCAs. The control units of VCA2, VCA3 and VCA4 are out of operation. In this mode the module has the same function as module A-132-2. That's why module A-132-2 will be discontinued.
- Normalling of the signal inputs: by means of internal jumpers signal input 1 can be normalled to signal input 2, signal input 2 to signal input 3 and signal input 3 to signal input In 4. That way the same input signal can be distributed to four different channels by means of control voltages (e.g. quadrophonic distribution of audio signals). Suitable control voltage sources are e.g. A-144 (Morphing Controller) or A-143-9 (Quadrature LFO).

Distortion/wavehaping module with extensive adjustment parameters - 8HP
Notes: Distortion/Waveshaper module for dynamic distortion of audio signals with extended settings. The applications of this module are waveform modifications and distortion like clipping and waveshaping of audio signals and control voltages (e.g. LFO).

The input is split by the module into three parts, processed by them and then mixed together:

- The original signal which can be amplified or attenuated with the "A" control
- Negative signal component with adjustable and voltage controllable clipping level "-L" and amplitude "-A"
- Positive signal component with adjustable and voltage controllable clipping level "+L" and amplitude "+A"

The amplitude parameters of both the positive and negative components can amplify in a positive or inverted fashion i.e. it can fold the signal. This creates additional harmonics and enriches the sound, creating very living sounds, especially when modulated by dynamic CVs.

Doepfer A-138d Crossfader & FX Insert Module Doepfer A-138d Crossfader & FX Insert Module Doepfer A-138d Crossfader & FX Insert Module
Cat: 716947 Rel: 29 Jan 19 • View all Synth modules

Crossfader for two different A-100 signals, plus insert for external effects
Notes: The A-138d primarily is used for crossfading between two modular signals. On the other hand you can used it for inserting stompboxes or other effects into your modular system. Both the inputs and the mix output are available twice, like a mini-multiples e.g. for using the input signal also for other applications, kind of like a Thru.

Crossfader: With the crossfading control CF you blend manually between the inputs In 1 and In 2. The Mute switch allows for muting one of the two signals, independent on the crossfader position.

Effect insert: The signal at input In1 is emitted at the FX Send output and can be attenuated with the Atten. control because the modular system works with much higher levels.

The effect unit's output is inserted to the FX Return input socket and its level can be boosted with the Amp. control. The processed signal is available at the bottom in 2 socket.

Use the CF control to blend between the original signal and the effect signal and to mute switch for quick muting e.g. of the effect return signal.
