Two Afrofunk gems enjoy floor-primed refocuses: Steve Monite's Doing It In Lagos-featured "Only You" gets a little juice from Sofrito's Frankie Francis who really brings the bass out in proceedings. Meanwhile on the B Nick The Record and Idjut Boy Dan Tyler tweak the energy and sheen of Tabu Ley Rochereau's "Hafi Disco" as the drums are given a little more momentum and the chorus and horns are really brought to the centre of the action. Stunning.

Atomic Runner Chelnov is an action/shooting game produced by Data East, one of the strongest game producers in Japan, originally released as an arcade game in 1988. The game has been much talked-about as a famous, problematic, bizarre, and unique work and in 2021 the soundtrack was released as a CD via an entity known only as the Data East Sound Team. Now the CD hears a reissue, on both its original format and now a vinyl LP edition, giving this rip-roaring sonic platformer a chance to shine. Similar to the recent proto-grime Wolverine soundtrack released earlier this month, Chelnov displays similarly bouncy 140bpm characteristics, making this a sure-to-be favourite for algoravers and, yes, that select breed of DJs who almost exclusively play music siphoned from game cartridges and obscure files.

Blue World is an album that was never intended for release. It features music commissioned for a soundtrack for a Canadian film in 1964 and showcases a quartet that was at its very best. It's made up of short tracks and alternate takes of early Coltrane material and is utterly vibrant. Catchy little ditties like "Village Blues", stripped down numbers like the title track and the mostly-improvised "Traneing In" are all testament to the enduring brilliance of Coltrane, no matter the setting in which he was playing. The clarity of the recording and richness of the bass playing also add to the overall beauty of this record.

Grammy-nominated Texan psychedelic-soul band Black Pumas, led by Eric Burton and Adrian Quesada, return after their 2019 self-titled debut album - leading to the pair being put up for 'Best New Artist' in 2020 - with a bold statement to break the sophomore album curse. Lead single 'More Than a Love Song' is the perfect introduction to the sound, Burton's commanding voice riding on a wave of progressively zanier instrumental patches and choir vocal samples, with a sultry deep south tone that, oddly, reminds me of CeeLo Green. Quesada's production style is quick and loose, oozing with soul - nothing more to be expected from former member of Grammy-winning funk band Grupo Fantasma. The two describes Black Pumas as an "electric church", the synths and digital organs punctuating Burton's wistful wailing perfectly. If you're looking for a soul release to close out the year, this is it.

An album that requires little to no introduction, but we'll give it a stab anyways: Both essential and alien to the scene, the self-titled debut Bad Brains LP will forever be heralded as one of the cornerstones of the hardcore punk movement. While originally honing their skills as funk/jazz group Mind Power, it wouldn't be until guitarist Dr. Know attended his first hardcore shows that an intense reinterpretation of punk tropes would be conceptualised within his madcap mind, leading to an incomparable collection of speedy, energetic and most important of all, musical compositions that would reshape the very foundations of a scene many stagedived from. Crammed full of raw, scuzzy classics such as 'Sailin' On' and 'Pay To Cum', yet interspersed with reggae and dub numbers including the tranquil 'Jah Calling', the Rastafarian hardcore ethos the band would coin on their seminal debut sent ripple effects still felt throughout the scene today.
