Review: Kevin Drum is often cryptic in his work and that didn't change here on OG23, a record on Streamline that after a long wait for fans now arrives, at last, on vinyl. It features just two pieces of music, one on each side, and both are isolated soundscapes from deep under the surface of the sea. The Chicago artist layers up subtle drones and spaced-out electro signifiers, otherworldly ambiance and deft sound designs that all empty your mind and allow a little paranoid to seep in, such is the creepiness of their atmosphere. Review: Despite her superstar status, gained in the years following her 2002 debut, Norah Jones has refused to stick to the same musical script, instead choosing a wide range of collaborators while applying her song writing talents to a variety of genres. On Visions, she's once again evolved her sound further in cahoots with producer Leon Michels - founder of revivalist funk-soul stable Big Crown Records and long-time member of the Dap-Kings. What's on offer is pleasingly fuzzy and nostalgic in tone, with the pair conjuring up songs and sound worlds rooted in late 60s garage-soul, psychedelic dream pop, and a brand of Americana rooted as much in black American music as country. Review: .Rhetorical Islands was originally pieced together from Giuseppe Ielasi's work for l'Audible Festival in Paris. An event dedicated to pushing forward thinking, mind-expanding, experimental and just plain strange sounds, his efforts certainly fit in with all of those terms. Presented here as ten standalone tracks, all without name and many without the usual elements we expect from a 'track', this first vinyl pressing of the work is really an extension of the original idea, rather than a time capsule of it. "Isolated sound worlds" is the phrase Ielasi used to describe what's happening here, and it's certainly true that the individual parts stand alone and can each be heard as autonomous. But together they also make a strange kind of sense, complementing, almost feeding into each other, even at the most stark juxtaposition. Ultimately, then, it's about interpretation, making what we choose from the ingredients.

Review: We have been enjoying the early transmission from Swiss label Active Life Worldwide and now, after almost four years since the last drop, they might have served up their best yet with this third EP. DJ Sommer brings the beats here once more having not only featured on the label's last various artists release but also the debut 12" back in March 2020. This is house music with a mix of driving, bumping drums but also real musicality in the synth from someone well-schooled in the classic Chicago sound but not slave to it. Four classy cuts with real character and all sure to cause quite the stir.

Review: International Anthem very quickly solidified its status as one of jazz and experimental music's most interesting labels. It puts out a pretty high amount of releases and next up is Jeremiah Chiu's In Electric Time, which was made on the Vintage Synth Musems's vast collection of classic, rare and staple synthesizers. Review: Let's face it, Hollywood director Christopher Nolan broke the mould with his re-envisioning of Batman. Taking things closer to the original comic books, themselves forced to 'go soft' by censors in the early-1950s, his films payed direct tribute to the saga's direction from the mid-1970s onwards. A trilogy of movies that were visually arresting, tonally dystopian, and viciously unhinged. It's not clear if we'll ever get a superhero (or anti-hero) film series of that class and calibre again, the world on screen so immersive you quickly feel like a Gotham native. A big part of that universe-building comes through the music, which enlists two of the greatest names in the history of soundtracks to help weave the tales. Hans Zimmer has composed for more than 150 films, James Newton Howard in excess of 100. This compilation of their shared caped crusader efforts proves why they're so well respected.

Review: Orb offshoot project Sedibus has proved popular with fans for two reasons: it reunites Alex Paterson with Andy Falconer, who worked extensively with the Orb between 1990 and 1994, and the music they make recalls some of the pair's best moments of that period - albeit with a quite different instrumentation. Seti, the pair's sophomore album, has been described by their label, Cooking Vinyl, as "ambient unplugged". That only tells half the story. While it does boast all manner of acoustic instruments - sitar, guitar, piano, tabla and other percussion - it also features Paterson's trademark spoken word snippets and the dreamiest of electronic chords and aural textures. With beautiful, immersive and typically lengthy compositions, it feels and sounds like a grown-up version of the Orb's mightiest early 90s work.

Review: For indie heads of a certain vintage, this album - a first full-length collaboration between Oasis lead singer Liam Gallagher and former Stone Roses guitar-slinger John Squire - is one of the most hotly anticipated of the year. It was recorded in Los Angeles over a three-week period last year, with former Foo Fighters and Gorillaz studio don Greg Kurstin handling production. As you'd expect, the album is undeniably nostalgic, with Squire's variously funky, raw and bluesy guitar licks and Beatles-esque backing tracks providing a fitting vehicle for Gallagher's distinctive lead vocals. For proof, check recent singles 'From Mars To Liverpool' - where Squires' solos towards the end seemingly soar above reverb-laden backing vocals that accurately pay tribute to the Fab Four - and the more psychedelic Roses-meets-Oasis flex of 'Just Another Rainbow'. There are no surprises, but fans will love it.

Review: Soul Departure clicks up its fifth EP here with Kikko Esse the able producer at the helm for the occasion. 'Deep Mind' is indeed deep but it's fulsome too - warm pads rush through the air waves as the drums and kicks establish the groove below. '4 PM' is more stripped back to the thudding kicks and lo-fi synth leads but diffuse chords bring plenty of late night soul. There is an upbeat energy to the surging house warmth of B-side opener 'Take It Easy' then 'Make It' shuts down in devastatingly emotional fashion with heart-melting chords and nagging little vocal hooks.

Review: We have been really liking what we've heard from the Dolphin label out if the US of late. Now we get a taster of an upcoming album from Blaque Dynamite with a second single from it. Beka Gochiashvili features on keyboards and synthesizers throughout the cut. The Stefan Ringer remix is a wet and funky mix of jazz, house and experimental sound. It has a sleazy sense of vocal naughtiness to it with shuffling broken beats and rich layers of percussion. The original is an organic and loose-limbed deep house vibe and Ben Hixon brings a little more edgy tech to the drums.

Review: Following the major success of 2018's A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships and 2020's controversial, overly indulgent, ludicrously lengthy yet genuinely brilliant Notes On A Conditional Form, many felt at a loss as to where The 1975 would set their sonic sights next. Shockingly, Matty Healy and co-opted to reign in their artistic scope with Being Funny In A Foreign Language; prioritising instantaneous delivery and poignant pop over swelling instrumental dirges and deep house experiments. Discarding many of their previous outsider influences in favour of delivering an unashamed pop-rock record; the resulting 11-track 40-minute LP is literally half the songs and half the runtime of its predecessor, yet utilises this tighter timeframe to craft some of their most memorable and effective pieces to date. From the sardonic disco-pop of 'Happiness' which channels the 80s, John Carpenter-obsessed aura of their self-titled debut, to the baroque orchestral indie-folk standout 'Part Of The Band' echoing early Vampire Weekend, to the folk-punk balladry of 'Wintering', LP5 from one of the biggest bands in the world is both a simultaneous swing for the fences and an introverted left turn into succinct composition and simpler song structure.

Review: Scottish electronic oddity Murray Collier returns on his own Real Landscape imprint - the sole preserve of this production alias - for a self-titled outing. His fifth release under the moniker certainly confirms what we already knew; this project is the work of a musical auteur, and is every bit as unique to the talent behind it as the label and EP name. Attempting to describe what's here isn't easy, then. 'The Conversation' uses mechanically precise percussion to lay out its otherworldly groove. 'Thin Ayrshire' goes lo fi and psychedelic, a track that sounds almost like a rural ritual being performed by a lost humanoid species. 'I'll Get To Hiding' is delightfully lackadaisical in vibe, strutting, shuffling, and stepping its way through what could be categorised as pop-r&b fed through the weird machine, and even that wouldn't come close.

Review: Drunkenstein is back on his 7" saga grind with this slow burning banger 'Beat Down Life Up' on the A-side, chopping out a downtempo breakbeat over a seriously groovy yet purposefully monotonous psych-tinged guitar line; the instrumental cut flirts with the jazz-funk meanderings of library music yet retained within the confines of boom-bap subtlety. On the B-side, we get a sleepy remix of Fatlip from The Pharcyde's 'Here Comes The Lip'; smothering the MC's fluid bars under a reverberating break and off-kilter organ samples, with some ever-so-slight dubs applied towards the backend to add another layer of drugged out despondency at odds with the animated yet distantly delivered bars.

Review: Few artists in the techno sphere make music as oddball and intriguing as Robag Wruhme, which makes him a great artist to remix. So it is that Andre Kronert steps up here with not one but two new twists on the German's 'Wadd Bodun' track for the Odd Even label. His first remix is a gritty one with unresolved loops and grinding stabs that bring a raw texture to the rolling tech house beats. On the flip, the Straight Back remix is a little more late-night and woozy, with balmy pads leading gooey trails as echoing hits that disappear off into the distance. Perfect for 5 am zone-outs.

Review: You can't really imagine members of Dream Division doing anything other than being part of Dream Division. A band inspired and heavily influenced by the soundtracks, themes and moods of movies by directors such as Dario Argento and John Carpenter, theirs is a world filled with silver screen tension, sinister plots afoot, and incredibly cool noises. Legend of Lizard Lake is a case in point. Album title certainly no accident, invoking B-movie scenarios by the letter-load, the record is paced with fuzzy guitars, spine-tingling organs, Casio-choral lines, twinkled and chimed melodies, vast, open, almost-Western-yet-very-synthy open sonic frontiers, and the overwhelming sense that something, somewhere, might be watching us. Enough to make the Stranger Things scores sound like they've never seen Phantasm, or at least not recently, this is the whole retro-hued package.

Review: US dub crew Park Heights has got a real gem on their hands here with this latest 7". It is a killer jam from the mid-1980s that was made at Aquarius Studio. The 'live digital' tune has never before been released which is a wrong that is rightly corrected here and is even more special as it has Errol Dunkley on the rhythm even though it is not his usual style. It is a heavy stepper with loopy drums and hits that echo off to infinity as he drops his loved-up vocals over the. It of course comes with a superb dub on the flip.

Review: New and exciting Los Angeles label YKW returns with a second release, this time from Montreal's Ohm Hourani who is well known in hardcore circles for his superb jazzy and minimal stylings. He offers one particularly standout track, 'Herbs Miles,' which mixes up a sample of Herbie Hancock discussing the legendary Miles Davis. His own live-recorded and processed trumpet layers in another soulful edge and makes it a brilliantly original jam. G76/Gojnea76 delivers a weird and wonky remix and then 'Down the Syncussion Hole' is another inventive and rather madcap sound from this studio wizard.

Review: Brothers in sounds (and lineage) Mark and Clive Ives deal with two of the biggest issues impacting music right now on one incredible record.WOO have a reputation for taking parts of archived sounds and formulating new things from those segments, and in this case the work is born from excerpts of four-track tape recordings made in the late-1980s. They then began reflecting on the "imminent nature of humanoid robots", and starting to create Xylophonics/Robot X. From artificial intelligence to reuse and sample politics and economics, these themes seem to guide the sounds themselves, which feel strangely nostalgic and futuristic, a vision of tomorrow that is inseprtable from the humans that made it - their understanding of the unfolding machine age through weird distorted jazz tech, deconstructed dub and psychedelic electronica. So, remembering all this is a reconfigured version of stuff made almost 35 years ago is truly mind-blowing.
