Review: Hypnosis (more often than not written 'Hipnosis') enjoyed success in their native Italy in the early-to-mid 1980s, initially with club-focused Italo-disco interpretations of then contemporary cuts by fellow European synth-fanciers. Having debuted in 1983 with a cover of Vangelis's 'Pulstar', they followed it up by taking on Jean-Michel Jarre's global smash 'Oxygene'. Here it gets a deserved reissue, allowing a new generation to revel in its alluring mixture of arpeggio-style bass, rubbery bass guitar licks, cascading electronics, triple-time drums and electrofunk inspired translations of Jarre's famous, insatiably hooky melody. Also included is original B-side 'Borpaz', a deliciously spacey, delay-laden original composition that includes some seriously funky synth licks and a proper early morning groove.

Review: It is now 40 years old but copping a reasonably priced vinyl version of Faxe's 'Time For Changes' is still a tough ask. But no need to worry because ZYX have got this super reissue version out in time for its 40th anniversary. It comes with the dazzling original version complete with silky Italo arps and chilly retro drum machine sounds and also an instrumental, plus the usual remixes from Flemming Dalum on the flip. He extends the breaks and makes the tune a little more suited to contemporary DJ play.

Review: 26 years on from the release of the very first Techno Club mix CD, the popular series has reached its 70th instalment. There's a celebratory feel about it, too, with series founder (and Teutonic trance behemoth) Talla 2LXC being joined by rising star Jes (who handles disc two) and the CDs coming packaged with stickers and a light-up wristband (ideal for creating that 'rave at home' vibe). Musically, it's tons of fun, with Talla 2LXC using his mix to surge between uplifting, hands-aloft cuts by John O'Callaghan, Cold Blue, John Askew and Ronski Speed & Sigma, as well as loads of his productions and collaborations. Jes takes a similar approach on her mix (CD2), flitting between her own tracks, remixes and collaborations and fine cuts by the likes of BT, Matt Fax, Sunbeam and Solarstone.

Review: Italian synthpop group Koto dropped their most seminal tune 'Jabdah' in 1986 and it has been a real dance floor classic ever since. Often coming out over the years with plenty of remixes (there have officially been 12 in all over) and versions as part of best of comps and whatever else, here it comes on a dedicated 12" picture disc with one extended version and one for DJs. It was the band's first single that charted and is still the sort of catchy and emotive tune that gets the dancefloor going and locked into its lush synth sounds and beguiling lyrics about space newspapers and waltzes.

Review: Martinelli - presumably not the Brazilian one who plays in the midst of Arsenal's attack - has his classic disco gem 'Cenerentola (Cinderella)' reissued here by ZYX, a label that is well known and revered for doing just that. First up is served as an extended vocal mix that places the sentimental vocals front and centre with the sleazy sax lines also shine bight. Following the more direct Italo disco workout that is the instrumental comes a remix of the vocal that has a much more bright, tropical and steamy hot feel perfect for summer sessions and then last of all a remix of the instrumental that might be the perfect balance of everything.

Review: Those who enjoy the more intense, mind-mangling end of techno (particularly the trance-tinged, big room-ready European variants) should check out this three-disc mix-up on ZYX. Felix Reichwelt handles disc one, surging through tracks from the likes of Uncertain (the warehouse-ready excellence of 'Whack'), Thomas Schumacher (the acid-fired Jam & Spoon revivalism of 'Come Closer') and Spartaque (the fiendishly brutal 'Exhausted'), before SLT and Schwarze Puppen take over on disc two with a mix tailor made for massive venues with enormous soundsystems, minimal lighting, and thousands of wild ravers reaching for the strobes. NK4!D handles the third and final disc, offering a fine balance between riffs, melodies, intense acid lines and thunderous techno beats.

Review: 1980s Italo disco don Alan Ross dropped his most well known jam 'The Last Wall' back in 1986. It has aged to perfection and still sounds like future music almost 40 years later, which is part of the reason it rams a classic that costs a few quid for an original. The ever reliable ZYX though has reissued it here on coloured vinyl 12" and includes the original as well as a pair of remixes. That OG version is all about the sugary sweet synth chords and skyward arps next to vocals that remind of Erasure. Flemming Dalum updates with a modern touch and a R-Mix version is the final piece of the puzzle.

Review: Mario Piu is a tried and tested techno workhorse who has been at this since almost day once. He started in the golden days of the 90s and still keeps on turning out the jams today. This new coloured album on ZYX brings together some of his best bits from over those years. Some are originals, some are remixes, all of them are detuned to remind you of his great contribution to the scene as well as light up clubs all over again. Of course, his most successful tune was a real club classic, the 1999 single 'Communication', which is included here.

Review: Germany's ZYX records picks of the reissue of Mauro Picotto hit Iguana. Perhaps the most famous Mauro composed track in his discography, many of the most important original remixes are gathered on this one 12"! Included, is the hard trance version with the Megavoices mix, the pulsating peak time version RAF and the anthemic Blank & Jones remix. The Megamind and Mas remixes should not be overlooked! Each version on here give you all the feels of this mega trance hit.

Review: A real doozy of an early Italo, proto-darkwave heater from Fred Ventura-led Fokewulf 190, bound to illicit dancefloor devastation any darn time of year. Straddling the boundary between the more uptempo chapters of Italo and the more austere permutations of synth pop, Fokewulf's timeless anthem lends itself well to DJ Tin Tin and Flemming Dalum's respectful but gently modernised remixes. If anything though, they cast the original in a more innovative light, with its sparse, classy drive.

Review: Long-standing Dutch acid-electro outpost Zodiak Commune are back with another trip into the creepy underbelly of the scene guided by the combined powers of Sound Synthesis and Acidulant. On the A-side of the record, the pair join forces for a collaboration they call Raim, in which they deliver creepy pads, edgy arpeggios and slamming beats aplenty. 'Zenhiser 303' in particular has a seductively dystopian tone which will be perfect for when you want to take the party somewhere darker. On the flip, Acidulant goes it alone for the downright nasty machine funk of 'Institutionize Planet X' while Sound Synthesis creates a widescreen extension of the A-side vibe with the epic 'Protect Our Freedom'.

Review: Dima Gastroler delivers a potent blend of heavy techno drums and dynamic acid lines here while also expressing his reflections on global imbalances through his music. Mixing up melody, emotion, and ambiguity, Gastroler's sound is a tribute to classic electronic music that melds vintage equipment with contemporary production techniques. With a penchant for experimentation and transcending genre boundaries, Gastroler prioritizes the emotional resonance of his compositions. For him, music is a medium to evoke genuine feelings and emotions, driving his creative process beyond mere sonic exploration. To sum up - emotive techno with vintage vibes.

Review: Acid Machines Vol 1 by G303 is the latest release by the long time Dutch label Zodiak Commune and these four tracks, combined, add up to one heck of a wicked acid techno record. 'Acid Dropping' is a crushing piece of acid trance. 'Power Corrupts' is a breakneck speed techno killer - you've got to love the classic Belgium sounding doom to it, it takes us right back to 1992. ' Beelzebub Rising' is a nasty breakbeat heater that is sure to pound down some doors when played loudly. The Squarepusher like 'Walk On By' adds a nice comedown IDM touch to the close of this vinyl. This release includes a poster and is limited to 200 copies only.

Review: Filth Rich gets suitably filthy on this fresh outing on Zimp. His Rave EP collides many different influences from techno to electro, acid to rave, and also chucks in some classic samples to really make the tunes pop. The first is a peak-time breakbeat bruiser with slapping hits and yelping vocals, then 'Hippies Gathering' is a prog techno classic from the late 90s Castle Morten rave scene. Randolph offers his own Filthy Rave remix that gets even more wild and included along the way are some sample-tactic snippets to liven up your set no end.

Review: M Parent's penchant for texture is laid bare on this searing and arresting new EP for Zement. It opens with 'Gravel Pit' which sounds like an audio diary from a car-wrecking plant. Twisted metal, fizzing battery acid, and crushed glass all feature over a distorted baseline and broken rhythm. Those same scuzzy sounds define the rest of the EP from the acid-laced 'Ideal Future' to the coruscated funk of 'Acid Thirst' via the caustic intensity of closer Climb These Walls'. An impressively unique offering that very much has its own singularly sound palette.

Review: Over-Nite Sensation has been long-hailed as the gateway drug into Frank Zappa’s extensive musical universe, after which there really is no going back. Now reissued and expanded by the Zappa estate, the album returns to the foreground again, in several formats, including one CD with over 57 unreleased and rare studio and live tracks piled on top of the original seven magnum opi. This edition, however, is an audiophile standard 2xLP edition, just as Uncle Meat intended from the jump. From the opening princely funk of ‘Dirty Love’ to the midway scattings of ‘Dinah-Moe Humm’ and the closing yippee-ki-yays of ‘Montana’, this album should be best remembered not only as FZ's sexiest, but coincidingly as the one on which music’s most notorious Bonnie & Clyde, Ike and Tina Turner, were enlisted to aid Zappa for the closing track, but were ultimately not credited due to a poor performance, by Zappa’s assessment.

Review: Frank Zappa left a lot of complex musical mysteries for the intrepid explorer to discover, but there's unanimous appreciation for Hot Rats which makes it a great entry point into the maverick's career after his initial rock outfit The Mothers Of Invention disbanded. Released in 1969, it was a more jazz-oriented affair with mostly instrumental pieces that sometimes rocked, sometimes wigged out and sometimes did both in a manner akin to the free jazz pioneers of the era. Sonically, it's out of this world too and now it's repressed on heavyweight wax with a bonus insert to take you into the story behind one of the finest albums in the Zappa canon.

Review: AC Soul Symphony is one of Dave Lee's lesser-known pseudonyms, so for it to be the vehicle for an album of such extravagance, of such meticulous detail, is a real treat. Featuring live strings recorded with a 20-piece orchestra, all 15 tracks that span the epic two-hour runtime are expansive and feel as if every note was placed by hand; There's this authenticity to tracks like 'Manhattan Skyline', a CD/Digital only track which dates all the way back to 2020 and its swelling horn crescendos that transport you back to a time when disco had the world on its knees. 'Philly Avengers' is a major standout, with its killer bass grooves and dazzling Korg solo. The last of the city-related trio of singles is album opener 'Windy City Theme', a mid-tempo violin-led vocal groove that pays homage to the metropolis in Illinois. This is the CD version, featuring the full two hour tracklist.

Review: Time to Attack the Dancefloor once more as we supply some heavy Disco & House weaponry. Featuring the brand new remix of Opolopo's storming 'Stroke my Disco' by dutch funkateers Fouk who double down on the Piano and Clav workouts for the peak time. Exclusive new material from Wipe The Needle who's 'Skyscrapers' track is a modern Jazz-Funk masterpiece, heavy on the flute and soulful bass. On the flip Dave Lee takes it back to '97 with his rework of Backroom Productions 'Classic Vibe' which sees him flex his house-ier muscles, re-arranging the classic elements and adding extra keys to this much loved underground tune. Finishing off the EP is Dave's remix of nu-soul diva Raquel Rodriguez, where he crafts Raquel's dynamic vocal delivery over chunky Disco drumming & soulful synths before letting loose into Roy Ayers-esque vibes finale!

Review: While his immense contribution to UK dancefloors often goes unacknowledged, Colin Curtis continues to delight dancers - and jazz dancers in particular - well over 50 years after making his first appearance behind the decks. More impressively, he continues to dig for new and previously unearthed music, sharing these finds via the ongoing Jazz Dance Fusion series. Volume four - the latest - showcases 26 tracks across two CDs, mixing hot new and recent jazz dance workouts with buried treasure of all kinds. It's naturally heavy on Latin jazz, fusion and percussive jazz-funk, but also touches on samba, salsa and "Latin spoken word". In other words, it's another sublime selection from one of UK dance music culture's true underground heroes.

Review: Colin Curtis returns with another finely-curated selection of the best 'Jazz Dance Fusion' records he could find. In Curtis' own words, Volume 4 reflects a combination of new music, unreleased music, and tracks that have never been on vinyl before or have not attained the recognition they deserve. A whopping 26 tracks are racked up on the digital edition, but this special vinyl record yields just thirteen further selections from that initial batch; leading the charge is the Rhodesy, hi-hatty '46 To Somewhere' by the Sultan's Swing, capturing the free-spiritedness of hitching a ride to somewhere untrammeled. Further choice sonic infections, infusing elements of vocal jazz, salsa and Latin spoken word, include Somos Amigos' 'Pa'gozar' and GeeW's 'Kyoto'. Get grooving!

Review: The Jazz Dance Fusion series is a compilation-based series collecting some of the finest songs in the Jazzdance, Latin Jazz and Fusion. Each volume is careful cultivated by the well-known British DJ Colin Curtis. After the first three successful editions, the fourth boasts tracks like 'Mother Of The Future" by Venus Dodson, 'I Face East' by Mary Greer Mudiku and 'Ponteio' by Miho Nobuzane, to name but a few. Review: ***B-STOCK: Slight surface marks ***


Sean McCabe's work has formed a solid backbone for Dave Lee's Z Records in the last couple of years. He has a fresh disco style that pairs the old with the new in essential ways. For this new 12" he teases his new album with a sampler of four reworks and remixes. His take on 'Now What' is deep and glossy, then he takes The Blackbyrds' 'Mysterious Vibes' in a slick and soulful deep house direction complete with standout lead sax. The deep house mood continues on the 'Timeline' remix chi has late night keys and exudes real warmth. Last of all is a fantastic broken beat workout that is lush and jazzy.

Review: Originally recorded in the late 1970s and using many of the musicians employed by Diana Ross on her track 'The Boss'. 'Can't Put No Price On Love' has long been regarded as North End's 'long lost' single - an inspired disco workout employing that pre-dates the Arthur Baker/Tony Carbone-helmed project's most famous song, Tee Scott/Larry Levan favourite 'Happy Days'. The original multitrack was unfortunately lost, but the track finally appears, 40-odd years after it was recorded. Whether what we're hearing was finished and mixed at the time is uncertain, but the 'Club Mix' is certainly authentic sounding - a genuinely energetic, joyous and effervescent New York disco number with full orchestration, addictive vocals (Jocelyn Brown & Dennis Collins on backing Vox) and a killer groove. Elsewhere across the EP, we get two versions of 'We Can't Live Like This Anymore' - the synth-laden, solo-heavy disco-boogie style original mix (B2) and a superb 'drum break' percussion tool (A2) - and a brilliantly low-slung instrumental dub-disco cover of The Temptations' 'Cloud 9'.

Review: Varhat continues to explore the potential of sleek minimal tech house attitude with a broad palette of input, serving up some cool and deadly tools on this latest YYK No Label 12" to inject some flair into the party. 'Daddy Beat' is a percussive beast leaning in on dexterous breaks from less-mined sources and keeping the pressure up around the 130 zone. 'Hold On' nods to Detroit techno in its swirling pads and machine soul bleeps, all the while trucking on a focused rhythmic trajectory. 'Surprise I'm Logan' returns to the drum funk sampling and 'Engage' locks into a distinctive strain of machine funk with plenty of hypnotic motifs and playful fills to turn heads in the midst of a marathon session.

Review: It's been some three years since Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts released his last bits for Mule Musiq, but now the Canadian minimal house mainstay makes a welcome return with this first outing for the Yoyaku crew. In many ways Yoyaku carries the torch for the scene this chap helped pioneer alongside the likes of Akufen and Mossa, so it's good to see things come full circle, and to note that he's lost none of his production flair. 'First Bump' is resplendent with expressive synth lines and an understated groove, while 'Upsalla' happily dives into a more twitchy, tangled kind of construction which will keep DJs more than happy in the extended blend. 'Victory Lap' shakes things up with a leftfield dub drop which typifies Coutu-Dumont's instincts outside the standardised framework of house music.

Manuel Saharan is an Argentinian artist who has been deep in this scene for almost a quarter of a century. He remains pretty prolific and more importantly pretty inventive. He drops a steam stream of music and most of it sells out in quick time. For his latest outing he heads to Yung Dumb out of Canada and cooks up more twisted takes on house and techno. There are acid gurglings underpinning the opener then a Fred Everything remix strips things back to dubby drums and rubbery 303s. Things get melodic and reflective on 'Mellow' and then 'No More' is a gorgeous synth piece that is full of heartache and forlornness.

Review: Public Castration Is A Good Idea is one of the rare instances of a bootleg instantly becoming part of a band's canon. As Michael Gira's Swans grew in stature on the outer edges of industrial rock through the 80s, their reputation as an incendiary live act rose in tandem. Some Bizarre gave their blessing to this recording which wound up as the first Swans live album, captured in the UK in 1986 in the wake of the Greed and Holy Money tours. It's a forbidding listen, as you might well expect - all clanking metal, barbed noise and Gira's troubled invocations - and it takes you right to the heart of the band in this formative era.

I've left out various imbecilities and feckless half-starts. Also included in this book are several previously published short stories. They're taken from the collections The Consumer and The Egg, as well as a few other hand- made limited editions of stories. In a few cases I've included excerpts rather than the entire story. This was done for aesthetic purposes, with the overall feel of this current volume in mind. There are a great many journal entries in this book. For the most part they are also, emphatically fiction. They're from an ongoing journal, not a diary. My journals are where I often allow a disembodied, fictional 1st person narrator to take over and unspool imagined events, diatribes, impossible scenarios, psychic auto-cannibalisms, and corrosive or ecstatic dreams etc. Again, these are fiction. Certain things I've written about (in fiction and in song form) seem to exist beneath the surface (in myself and others) and I find them compelling to look at and to describe. I view this as a positive act. In acknowledgment of the constricting and microscopically judgmental and censorious times we live in, the usual authorial caveats apply here. Certainly there are many purely anecdotal journal entries included in this book as well, and my presumption is that an intelligent reader would be able to differentiate one from the other. Personally, I'm very suspicious of memory (especially my own), so I can't definitively vouch for the veracity of the recounting of the literal events herein either. I have also excised material that I felt too personal to include, out of respect for the people involved as well as for myself. There are several large gaps in the journal entries over the years. This is due to lost journals of the time, and in one case a lost laptop (which, painfully, contained a great deal of writing). There are also periods where I didn't keep a journal and didn't write fiction. In any event, I've tried to include fiction and journal entries that correspond roughly to the period before and after a musical album's release and the words that were written for that music. The end section of this book consists of recently unearthed visual documents and imagery and functions here as an incidental archive. The images span the years from 1974 to the present."

Review: Sampha is now well established as a solo artist in his own right having first risen up via work with SBTRKT, Kanye West, Drake, Jesse Ware and Frank Ocean, amongst others. The British singer, songwriter and producer has since released a couple of well received albums but before then came his Dual EP back in 2013. It found the South Londoner really establish his own voice on a mix of tunes that were recorded in his own bedroom and showcased his style and intent early on. Snap up this bit of history on exclusive orange vinyl.

Review: Johnny Malek is a Detroit-based fashion designer-turned-producer who makes a strident arrival on Yoruba with this EP of gospel-infused deep house. It's a potent approach which chimes perfectly with Osunlade's esteemed label, reportedly prefacing a larger project to come. There is an abundance of Afro house drums on 'I Promise', an anthem in the making with a vocal which will lodge itself in the hearts and minds of any assembled throng it's faced with. 'Venus Rising' maintains the vibe, confirming Malek's arrival as an artist to keep tabs on in the new wave of deep house artists.

Review: The Yore label has got some lush jazzy house delights on its hands here thanks to Shaka, who steps up to the plate with Days Of Life. The EP opens with 'Cosmic Bossa' which has golden sustained chords and Latin stuffing rhythms with a worldly vocal bringing the heat up top. 'Days Of Life' has a rich feel-good vibe with rousing horns and lots of happy pianos all stitched into another steamy and organ-laced deep house beat. Last of all is 'Our Instinct,' a playful US garage-style cut with skip in the drums and more serious synth craft full of joy.

Review: In the past 15 years, Yore has established itself as one of the most celebrated labels in terms of consistency, quality and success. The label is brimming with talented artists doing their own take on the Detroit sound. The most recent is a collaboration between Elbert Philips and Andre Espeut called 'Tears' where it also gets some remix treatment to fill up Yore #49. The 'Acid Dub' remix gets granular with the groove. Deep and dubby, just how we like it, as is the piano towards the ending too. From there, you have other great versions. The 'Sinsay Reprise' highlights the vocal sample a bit more but has great building potential for any house DJ. The 'Loving Tribute Instrumental' is the straightest house approached version where the piano really takes center stage. Things close out with a broken beat version via the 'Andrew Emil Dreamix', meaning there's plenty to choose from. Depending on your style, know that this can bridge styles in any set giving it a versatility that is unmatched.

Review: REKAB has been making strong moves in the world of techno with his classic inspired but futuristic blend of melodic techno. The My Future & My Past EP showcases that. 'Soulful Season' opens the album with a magical and traditional Detroit techno sound, featuring playful melodies and ambient touches. Key piano notes impact the tune, setting the tone for the rest of the album. The title track, 'My Future & My Past,' is a robotic funk and techno fusion with a touch of electro. The beautiful melody adds a touch of soul to the track. Side 2 opens with 'Raw Note,' featuring an addictive groove and memorable keys. 'Bad Nights Better Nights' closes the album with a deeper groove, combining UK ambient techno and IDM influences. Overall, Soulful Season is a diverse and engaging album that showcases the artist's range and versatility.

Review: The festive season can be busy, stressful and quite frankly hard work. Thank you to Joel Andrews then for serving up this perfect excuse to take half an hour to yourself and get lost in his most lush and soothing ambient sounds. The A-side is taken up entirely by 'Paradise Bird' which is rich with spring-like energies and delightful uplifting melodies. But this limited long player also offers more quiet moments of calm and introspection such as on the harp-like and heavenly melodies of 'Chamber Of The Heart.' Glorious stuff that will enrich and energise your life with its subtle and charming beauty.

Review: New and exciting Los Angeles label YKW returns with a second release, this time from Montreal's Ohm Hourani who is well known in hardcore circles for his superb jazzy and minimal stylings. He offers one particularly standout track, 'Herbs Miles,' which mixes up a sample of Herbie Hancock discussing the legendary Miles Davis. His own live-recorded and processed trumpet layers in another soulful edge and makes it a brilliantly original jam. G76/Gojnea76 delivers a weird and wonky remix and then 'Down the Syncussion Hole' is another inventive and rather madcap sound from this studio wizard.

Review: Full Time Men are a lesser spotted curio of New York's indie rock scene in the late 80s, mainly known for their 1988 album Your Face My Fist. As much as that title might make them sound like a hardcore punk outfit, they carried a strong melodic sensibility to their spiky rock and new wave which is celebrated on this retrospective compilation. Part Time Job shows how varied the band were in their heyday, drawing on rock n' roll and blues as much as power pop or noise rock, and that carries through to the newer tracks which make their first appearance on this collection.
