Review: In many ways it's hard to get a fix on U2's 90s period. It's as though they folded time between their breakthrough 80s albums and the comfortable middle age period post the turn of the millennium. However, Zooropa remains a wildly exciting album which saw Bono and his buddies weren't afraid to mess with the formula and embrace what was happening outside of their mainstream rock bubble. There are some surprising risks taken and yet their gargantuan song craft remains undiminished. On this 30th anniversary pressing there's also some bonus remixes tucked onto side four, bringing Oakenfold's equally supersized Perfecto sound into the mix.

Review: The debut album from Amsterdam-based muso Donald 'Donny' Madjid (a member of The Mauskovic Dance Band) came after an unusual break in his often hectic touring cycle, largely thanks to the pandemic. Keeping himself sane with a plethora of vintage synths as well as a 60s era drum-machine, the resulting experiments gave way to 2021's retro-fitted disco meets new wave opus Pure Donzin. Now that tour-life has resumed and his schedule chock-a-block yet again, it's taken three years for another dose of pure Donny with the release of his follow up Zonder Pardon EP. Authentic swathes of machine-percussion, thick synth-lines and Madjid's own disarming croon (sung almost exclusively in his native tongue) channel the sonic iconography of Talking Heads or Roxy Music, yet transported by way of an Italo-Disco rave to the funkiest spots of inner-city Holland.

Many people have many ideas about what Adam & The Ants sound like, but they confounded expectations from their very first single when they shared 'Young Parisians' with the world in 1978. As Adam Ant later described, their sole single for Decca confused everyone who thought they were a punk band, which was entirely their intention. Review: 3 Men Gone Mad were an independent group formed in Blackburn and Darwen in the UK. They fused electronic sounds with rock and were prolific in the 1990s when they became cult favourites amongst those who know. You Try is a much sought-after collection that has been restored by Utopia Records many years after it made its way onto John Peel's 1991 Festive 50. He heard in it a mix of The Clash, Joy Division and Talking Heads and that still rings true. The main mix has a raw energy that captures the angst of Britain at the time - and still today, frankly. A spaced-out dub brings a fresh feeling of euphoria and an extended B-side mix draws out this record's undeniable pleasures.

Review: The Flaming Lips are among the greatest musical enigmas of the late-20th and early-21st centuries. If you've not seen the exceptional and insightful documentary, The Fearless Freaks, then we highly recommend doing so. The film charts the outfit from their early days as what might be described a white noise and industrial troupe, through to their crossover into mainstream success via one of the most unique indie-pop sounds we have ever encountered. Suffice to say, then, watching them live is an inimitable experience, an evening of surreal inflatables plucked straight from psychedelic somewhere and frantic strobe-lit guitar cacophonies. While this recording of their whole-of-record rendition of landmark LP Yoshimi doesn't really touch upon anything that came before said album, it does capture what makes their performances so incredible.

With the title Wyrd Psearch, Walker takes direct aim "at the ubiquity of people claiming things are eerie or weird/wyrd in the present cultural milieu", while the word-search artwork is intended to highlight our cultures' obsessive search for meaning in an increasingly illogical world. Twinkling no wave riffs, glistening synth lines and muted requests to loved ones requesting their presence on a trip to town to reup on prescription meds.

This time in the form of World War, a compilation of rare demos that takes its name for the band's seminal early single, which appears in a particular raw and unfettered, grinding version on this collection. Review: On his sixth album, Pete Molinari continues to evolve as a singer and songwriter from his country blues roots when he was a whippersnapper in the Medway Delta into the international sophisticat he is now. There's a swooning romanticism to Wondrous Afternoon which feels in thrall to 60s lounge pop and Italian big band swing, and he namechecks Rome as an influence on this most feel-good of records. Review: We all lost a big one in 2018 with the death of Mark E. Smith. One of the most prolific songwriters of the preceding decades, and the only constant member of The Fall, he channelled humour of the disenfranchised, rage of the people, punk sensibilities and experimental tendencies to create something that genuinely sounded fresh. Amazingly, it still did by the time he bid us farewell. That's some longevity of vitality, and when a band has such a lifespan it's almost impossible to even consider a Best Of type release. White Lightening is as close as you'll get, then, focusing on ten tracks recorded by the outfit, in various iterations, between 1978 and 2001 - amazingly, charting two-thirds of the 40 year story in a way which, while not necessary expansive, really conveys exactly what they were about at different points in that career, and throughout their entire era-spanning run.

Review: Rough Trade reissue Green Gartside's landmark 2006 album 'White Bread Black Beer'- a deeply personal, sparse document of the Scritti Politti singer's time spent recording in his Dalston house, after the band's apparent split. Gartside's production on the record is sparse, allowing his breathy, tender vocals to take centre stage. Highlights include the tender synthscape of 'No Fine Lines' and the 80s-Scritti-throwback upstroke of 'Petrococadollar', which calls to mind the lugubrious later synth works of 80s japanese heroes like Yukihiro Takahashi and Brian Wilson's sunny, unsettling pop masterpieces in equal measure. Like the title suggests, the album is a wholesome and nourishing listen, which chronicles Gartside's triumphant return to the public sphere with a formula successfully alluding to both Scritti Politti's earlier Marxist din and latter silken synth pop with ease and conviction.

Review: A great choice by Music On Vinyl - whom at this point have proven their mettle at sating the desires of almost any type of past music enjoyer - Chapterhouse's 'Whirlpool' is the debut studio album by the English shoegaze band, and thoroughly deserves this case of retrospection. In just nine tracks, the quartet of Andrew Sheriff, Stephen Patman, Simon Rowe and Ashley Bates established a hugely maximal sound, stylistically nailing the form by pairing its vacuuming vocal washes with more propulsive, hard-limited mixes and masters, informed by industrial and dance music most notably. Contemporaries of similarly tersely-named bands like Lush, Moose, Ride and Curve, Chapterhouse were indeed the most multi-syllabic, not to mention least restrained band out at the time; standouts 'Pearl', 'Autosleeper' and 'Falling Down' nailed the explosion of '90s indie ferment and the overflow of emotions that came with the decade.

Review: Where's My Utopia? is the highly anticipated follow up to Leeds post-punk darlings Yard Act's Mercury Prize-nominated debut LP The Overload, and continues their eccentric, whimsical and sobering assessment of life in modern day Britain with a cheeky smile plastered over decades of embittered rage. Following on from last year's bizarre Black Mirror-inspired eight-minute single 'The Trench Coat Museum', this sophomore effort succeeds at every turn a second album should. Linking up with Gorillaz' Remi Kabaka Jr to handle production, the move has led to a curious wading into influences that might have seemed obvious to outside ears, with a newfound embracing of new wave synth pop whilst tapping into the psychedelic sonic world and political ethos of Fela Kuti. Review: Where's My Utopia? is the follow up to the Leeds band's critically-acclaimed debut record The Overload, which arrived in January 2022. A co-production between Yard Act and Gorillaz member Remi Kabaka Jr., this latest album comes across as a meditation on the contemporary post-Fordist condition of the creative worker. Speaking about 'Dream Job', the band's James Smith said: "'Dream Job' feels like an apt introduction to the themes explored on Where's My Utopia? - though not all encompassing. In part I was scrutinising and mocking myself for being a moaning ungrateful little brat, whilst also trying to address how the music industry is this rather uncontrollable beast that hurtles forward unthinkingly, and every single person involved in it plays their part." Echoing the conflicted inner turmoil of reluctant bandleaders such as Mark E Smith of the Fall - "it's a constant battle" - and the sonic affect of Talking Heads, the album addresses a question central to our times: what do you do when everything you've ever wanted suddenly lands in your lap, but the questions still keep on coming? How do you handle fame and success, when your fans secretly resent the structures that elevated you to that status? Despite these contradictions, all this doesn't stop James Smith, Ryan Needham and Sam Shipstone from delivering a rip-roaring album as expected. If they can find the motivation to make such effective music despite their doubts (meditating on present conditions of poverty while keeping up a smile), then so, perhaps, can you.

Review: Big Boys are punk visionaries from Austin in Texas and they sure made a big bang with what they described as their "debut, sophomore, and final album." This bunch of renegades came up in the late 1970's Austin scene. The band was led by the dynamic Randy "Biscuit" Turner, alongside Tim Kerr, Chris Gates, and various drummers like Rey Washam. They infused their music with skate funk, which means they somewhat deviated from hardcore norms at the time. Their diverse sound touched on post-punk akin to The Minutemen and inclusion in Thrasher magazine's cult "skate comps" catapulted them to fame among 80s skate punk enthusiasts. Renowned for engaging their live audiences like few others, they fearlessly explored new musical realms, even tackling Kool and the Gang covers at one point.

Review: What Do We Do Now is the fifth solo studio LP recorded by J Mascis since 1996. This is obviously not a very aggressive release schedule, but when you figure in the live albums, guest spots and records done with his various other bands (primarily Dinosaur Jr. but also The Fog, Heavy Blanket, Witch, Sweet Apple, and so on), then, to paraphrase Lou Reed, "J's week beats your year." What Do We Do Now began to come together during the waning days of the Pandemic. Utilizing his own Bisquiteen Studio, J started working on writing a series of tunes on acoustic with a different dynamic than the stuff he creates for Dino. The finest set of solo tunes J has yet penned, this is a playful and soft compendium of indie songs revelling in disbelief, uncertainty and community.

Review: Western Approaches is a fitting title for a band who've spent much of the last two years living their American dream. However, you'll find its origins are a lot closer to home. An old World War II Naval base in Liverpool city centre shares the same name, and it's no coincidence. The album was conceived on the docks, a new location for Red Rum Club, and is again much closer to home for the boys. It seems the further afar they play, the tighter their grip on their roots become, performing their biggest headline show to date in Bootle, a small town in North Liverpool where some of the lads grew up. This nostalgia, paired with a dockland setting, provided a post-war aesthetic to inspire the album, reflected in the name and the artwork. The album marks a change from the well-polished, clean-cut sonics that had become a theme in the band's previous works, and comes replaced with the raw energy they're known to produce onstage. The industrial influence is reflected in the production and it became a conscious effort to add more sound effects, distortions and echoes into the arrangements.

Review: Unusually, Optimo's JD Twitch and Jonny Wilkes have taken the unusual step of not announcing the tracklist for their two-part 25th anniversary compilation ahead of release. Ordering, then, requires a leap of faith, but given the sheer breadth, diversity and quality of the music they've been playing over the last quarter of a decade, there's no doubt we're in safe hands. Review: Formed in 2011 and led by the whimsical penmanship of Philip Sutton (Comet Gain), Pale Light are a criminally overlooked, often slept on indie/folk-pop gem that released a pair of cracking albums in the early 2010s. Often forgotten, however, are the slew of smaller singles (including a self-released 7", CDEP and two digital EPs, as well as a split 7" with Lake Ruth and a coveted spot in Slumberland's 30th anniversary 7" series) which have now all been compiled by the lovely folks over at Jigsaw Records onto one definitive collection of underappreciated beauty. Review: Originally released as a bootleg live album in 1986, Walls Have Ears was a rare window into one of Sonic Youth's earliest UK tour appearances. Though notorious on the band's black market, the album has only recently been given the band's green light, who've now licensed it in agreement with Goofin' Records. Containing early versions of later Sonic Youth fixtures like 'Expressway To Ur Skull', this is a key record for any would-be aficionado; made up of recordings of one of their final shows with Bob Bert at London's Hammersmith Palais, this is a great addition to your music-historical arsenal.

Review: Walls Have Ears first surfaced as a bootleg live album from an unknown source, cropping up in conjunction with a throng of incendiary live performances by Sonic Youth made between London and Brighton at the height of their fame. Though the original bootlegger's identity is unknown - Thurston Moore was livid at the fact, famously mumbling, "our creative control was put on the spot by this guy" - the album is tightly and expertly assembled, lending it enough credo to be reissued by Goofin this 2024. As Sonic Youth biographer Steve Chick wrote of the album, "unloved by its creators, Walls Have Ears proves that artists sometimes aren't the best judges of their own artistic output," and this is, nonetheless, a whoppingly firecracking sound.

Review: Recorded between Oxford and Abbey Road, The Smile (Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead, and Tom Skinner of Sons Of Kemet) is the second full-length LP by the fantasy troupe, following up 2022's A Light For Attracting Attention. On first announcement, speculation abounded that it was tangentially related to Radiohead's 2011 album The King Of Limbs, since the phrase "wall of eyes" appeared in its promo material - though this album is decidedly different in sound and centres in on themes such as the isolation of fame and Kaufman-esque surrealisms.

Review: Given their Radiohead connections Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood make up two thirds of the band), there's always been an enormous amount of interest in The Smile - a lockdown-born project that has plenty of potential. Wall of Eyes, the trio's second album, is certainly impressive. For proof, check the moody, suspenseful and slowly unfurling title track (all pulsing, low-slung semi-acoustic grooves, eyes-closed vocals, dense electronic textures and soundtrack strings), the heady, subtly jazz-flecked wall of sound that is 'Friend of a Friend' (listen out for the music concrete-style sound collage sitting in the background of the White Album era Beatles-esque 'Friend of a Friend'), and the lo-fi, string-laden headiness of the largely beat-free 'Bending Heretic', whose cut-glass horror strings and Nine Inch Nails style guitars are impressively intense at times.

Review: Depeche Mode's 'Wagging Tongue' was first released in 2023 as the star number from the indelible synthpop band's comeback album and swansong, Memento Mori. Something of downtempo musical elegy, the original track is a crisp exercise in melancholy uplift, colliding the band's usual synthetic arpeggiations with grass-is-greener lyrical themes. Now, however, comes a new ten-track remix bundle, of which select remixes have been chosen for a set of limited releases on wax. Most of the artists enlisted for the job have done a stellar job, amping up the tempo to a neatly electrified 130-ish-bpm, while indulging the zeitgeist's penchant for well-rounded but beefy sonics. On this one, none other than Daniel Avery sticks out with a futureological cosmic electro take, while Hawtin Gaiser opts for knocking big-room techno, and Henning Baer cools things down with a cityscape-soaring 808 remix.

Review: Originally from way out West in Yukon, Konner Whitney has built up a presence on the outer edge of modern country by channeling the sound of Fred Neil, Harry Nilsson and other such heartworn travellers and folding in a subtle streak of punk rock. As well as his two solo albums for Maple Death in the past few years, Whitney has been touring extensively with a band who now form an intrinsic part of the project, and this live album captures them coming back to Montreal following an extensive European tour. It's the best scenario for a live gig - a set of players locked in unison and free to flow, coming home with something to show from their travels. As an introduction or an extended trip into Whitney's sound, this is a stellar LP which proves great, classic songwriting will never tire as an art form.

Review: Something in the Eastern European house and dance music proclivity has always struck us as enduringly authentic, perhaps due to its interest in folk music fusions; the label Sad Fun have surely played a key part in doling out this impression. Now they offer their latest addition to the fantasy with a label-described "true Estonian lowkey gem" in the form of duo Ajukaja & Edith Karlson, aka. Vana, whose combined efforts frankly, dustily and ironically toy with the pop music cliches native to their homeland. A-and-B-siders 'Vimme Ratsu' and 'Kuu Maa' are said to rework an '80s Estonian coastal folk-pop favourite and perform a "pseudo-reggae" pastiche respectively. Both have that effortless murmured charm on the vocals, recalling a nostalgic time of European make-do, A10-mic-from-the-junk-store, bottle episodic, rickety recorded goodness.

Review: Word of a sixth album from Big Thief comes with their latest track 'Vampire Empire'. First debuting live on Stephen Colbert's Late Show in March 2023, its lyrics express an inner conflict at "vampire empires", of the tendency for relationships to err towards toxic, parasitical and contingent mindsets and a rallying cry for infinite and unbroken loves. Review: Two years on from her much-loved album Valentine in 2012, Snail Mai makes a welcome return with this lovely new EP, Valentine Demons. All four of these tracks are intimate affairs with closely mixed, often whispered vocals. Every single finger movement on the strings can be heard which brings each one to life. Aside from one never before heard tick 'Easy Thing' these are demo recordings made in the lead-up to that last album using just a minilogue synth, interface, mic, and guitar in her parents' house in Maryland. Their rawness and immediacy makes them at least as good as the final products on the album, if not better.

Review: Canadian noise-rock trio Metz deliver their fifth full-length LP for their home label Sub Pop. Expressing an exponential graph of maturity, that has grown over their decade or so of recording and releasing, Metz' sound on Up On Gravity Hill veers more towards an almost black-metallic atmosphere, to counterpoise their originally stark, rageful sound. Conceptually, the album's change in sound matches its thematic content, with the band having found more peace in contrast, and the life-promising realisation that one can only experience its most joyful moments on the sole condition that one has also suffered its worst vagaries - there is no paradise without the fall. On the likes of '99' and 'Entwined', we're met with a driving, repetitious howl set against a sludgy axe-y backdrop, as vocalist Alex Edkins performatively laments and celebrates the ways of the world at the same time.

Review: A quarter of century has now passed since the release of Up, R.E.M's 11th studio album. It was a set that perplexed some critics on its original release in 1998, in part because it was more experimental in tone (while remaining a fine, song-based set) and saw the band employ drum machines and electronic instrumentation to expand their sound palette. As this anniversary reissue proves, Up has aged well and is arguably ripe for reappraisal by those critics who initially panned it. Even so, what makes this double-disc celebratory edition special is CD2, which boasts an 11-track recording of a surprise set the band played in Los Angeles in early 1999. As well as featuring fine versions of tracks from the album ('Daysleeper', 'Lotus'), we're also treated to storming run throughs of such favourites as 'Losing My Religion', 'Man On The Moon' and 'It's The End of the World As We Know It'.

A monumental achievement, filled with pace changes and soul-ripping drops into oblivion.

Review: DIY pop titans the Reds, Pinks & Purples take aim at the threads of hope with untethered abandon on their new album Unwishing Well. With the project helmed up by songwriter and musician Glenn Donaldson and backed up by collaborators Thomas Rubenstein, Lewis Gallardo, Daniel Pearce and Kati Mashikian, the new LP is a romantic sadcore memory-dive, fleshing out a 90s leftfield pop quintessence and lending it a contemporary production edge. Review: The world was stunned by Sinead O'Connor's untimely death, but in such periods it's only right to cast our minds back over her huge body of work and be reminded of her talent. It's no surprise to see her seminal early albums getting reissued and 1993's Universal Mother is right up there with her most cherished works. In typical O'Connor style the album opens up with a quote from prominent feminist Germaine Greer, but the album was in fact a relatively grounded, direct affair with plenty of accessible grooves from the rolling 'Fire On Babylon' to the spiritually charged 'Thank You For Hearing Me', reportedly written about her relationship with Peter Gabriel.

Review: Skep Wax's first Under The Bridge compilation, released in 2022, reunited the bands, songwriters and producers who populated cult early '90s indie label Sarah Records. Review: Under The Bridge was a compilation of work by artists who had, at some point or another, recorded on the cult imprint Sarah Records. It should already be on your radar. If not, we recommend digging for it. Now here's part two, a 2024 update which takes that idea much further, presenting a more expansive track list and platforming some brand new projects to boot. Timeless stuff comes thick and, quite often, pretty fast, with plenty of driving garage rock to feel propelled by. Old favourites are here, for example Even As We Speak and Secret Shine, Action Painting! and The Hit Parade. And there are also new groups, such as Michael Hiscock of The Field Mice leading an act called Gentle Spring, and a collaboration between Mark Tranmer and James Hackett, both usually of The Orchids (who also appear on here), but recording as Vetchinsky Settings.
