Review: The debut album from Amsterdam-based muso Donald 'Donny' Madjid (a member of The Mauskovic Dance Band) came after an unusual break in his often hectic touring cycle, largely thanks to the pandemic. Keeping himself sane with a plethora of vintage synths as well as a 60s era drum-machine, the resulting experiments gave way to 2021's retro-fitted disco meets new wave opus Pure Donzin. Now that tour-life has resumed and his schedule chock-a-block yet again, it's taken three years for another dose of pure Donny with the release of his follow up Zonder Pardon EP. Authentic swathes of machine-percussion, thick synth-lines and Madjid's own disarming croon (sung almost exclusively in his native tongue) channel the sonic iconography of Talking Heads or Roxy Music, yet transported by way of an Italo-Disco rave to the funkiest spots of inner-city Holland.

Review: Temple Musiq kicks off with a new EP from label head Temple. The opener 'Who You Are' has already achieved anthem status thanks to getting plenty of plays during Temple's own sets while he has opened for the likes of Rick Wilhite, Osunlande and Trus'me. It's got a nice drum machine drive, subtle acid lines and hooky choruses. The Prins Thomas remix is as you would expect a little more suspensory and cosmic, while Temple's 'Wait For Love' brings you back down to the dancefloor with a taught, twisted, tech house rawness that is offset by a sultry sax line. 'The Tetrah' then winds down with more elastic and dubbed-out, slow-motion house sounds.

Review: Few artists in the techno sphere make music as oddball and intriguing as Robag Wruhme, which makes him a great artist to remix. So it is that Andre Kronert steps up here with not one but two new twists on the German's 'Wadd Bodun' track for the Odd Even label. His first remix is a gritty one with unresolved loops and grinding stabs that bring a raw texture to the rolling tech house beats. On the flip, the Straight Back remix is a little more late-night and woozy, with balmy pads leading gooey trails as echoing hits that disappear off into the distance. Perfect for 5 am zone-outs.

Review: Here comes the Booom!!! Edits label with another sublime selection of deep house burners. This third volume is from the artist who goes by the name of Earls Booom!!! Edits takes the form of four cuts titled 'NEP.' Th opener is awash with smoky pads and sombre chords over a mid-tempo and dusty groove, but things pick up on the second cut with its gorgeous r&b vocals swirling over warm and humid bass and drums as cosmic synth lines rise out of the mix. On the flip, there is a congo-heavy rhythm topped with a deft little r&b hook nice more and the closer brings more pumping grooves but still with a big heart. These are steamy backroom sounds of the highest order.

Review: Munich's mighty Ilian Tape is the next label on which Laksa impresses with this new Voices 12". First out of the blocks is the sound system bothering 'Tech Steppas' with its wobbly low end and percolating dark drum funk. 'LEO' brings a more brutal broken beat with elastic bass that makes you move in many different directions at once while 'The Art Of Slip' is a pounding mix of thudding kicks, tripped-out vocal loops and moody synth menace that never lets up. Last but not least is 'Enjoyment' which rides on a thrilling and airy half-speed percussive rhythm that has plenty of height to it. Another inventive EP from the Ilian crew.

Review: Something in the Eastern European house and dance music proclivity has always struck us as enduringly authentic, perhaps due to its interest in folk music fusions; the label Sad Fun have surely played a key part in doling out this impression. Now they offer their latest addition to the fantasy with a label-described "true Estonian lowkey gem" in the form of duo Ajukaja & Edith Karlson, aka. Vana, whose combined efforts frankly, dustily and ironically toy with the pop music cliches native to their homeland. A-and-B-siders 'Vimme Ratsu' and 'Kuu Maa' are said to rework an '80s Estonian coastal folk-pop favourite and perform a "pseudo-reggae" pastiche respectively. Both have that effortless murmured charm on the vocals, recalling a nostalgic time of European make-do, A10-mic-from-the-junk-store, bottle episodic, rickety recorded goodness.

Review: Vemodalen means 'The fear that everything has already been done.' If that's not an enticing enough invitation to dBridge's album then we don't know what is. The music as relatable, too. Powerful, slow, sexy and vulnerable, it paints from a synthetic palette anyone over 30 has grown up with and will know intuitively from music and movies. Ranging from poppy motifs that are reminiscent perhaps of Roxy Music or Visage to more introverted electronica that nods at the Rephlex sound and perhaps Si Begg, all backed up by his history as Heartdrive and the Autonomic sound, this is dBridge looking back to look forward. Stunning.

Review: YTP, Raw Takes, Ole Mic Odd & Alonzo, and Chupacabras are all back once again for some more authentic sounds from the underground. These more than able producers land on a hand-stamped translucent green wax 12" that marks the second installment in the Source Material Various Artist series. Just like the first, this is a monster outing with four searing electro cuts that bring intergalactic warfare to any party. '116ctro' is a visceral cut with corrugated rhythms and zippy synths. 'And We Rock' has a funky broken beat and tons of reverb and 'Compassion' slows it down a touch but has lashing synths and thunderous kicks to keep you moving.

This fresh project is the brainchild of Toronto's Cosmic JD and Aaron Santos, both affiliated with the Hypnotic Mindscapes label and party collective. They showcase their singular take on tight, twitchy cosmic tech house across a quartet of its that start with the snappy snare work of 'What We're On' before 'Primitive Holiday' (feat Masayuki Tomita) is more raw and coarse with sharp hits and spraying basslines. Review: The fast-rising Purveyor Underground Ltd kicks on again here with a sizzling seventh EP that is as rude as they come - in both meanings of the word - from Die Familia. It is his own East Side Gangster remix of 'U Dat Bitch' that kicks off with hard-hitting house kicks and sleazy vocals over a rugged bassline. 'House Music' (part 1 - Late Night edit) is just as raw but more deep and hypnotic with its ascending synth lines and steamy vocal coos. 'Try Again' is tense emotionally and physically with deep cut, well-defined grooves topped with the smooth vocal coos and rising synth tension. A Ben Miller 4am Afro dub then brings more skip and funk to the rhythms while Davi Penn keeps things tight and tech-y with his version. Review: Aniara's output has always been brilliantly designed for club deployment but could never really be considered as mere tools. The artists who appear on the Swedish imprint have a cultured sound and a knack for crafting maximum impact from minimal elements. Enter Mattias El Masouri who does just that with the sublime 'Time Dilation In Ultraviolet'. It's a hypnotic deep house cut with real drive that's down to the deft broken kick drum patterns, pulsing synth and heady pads that swirl above. 'Inre Dimension' is a 13-minute plus sonic daydream with paddy drums, drumming pads and perfectly airy hi-hats that anchor you in the heart and now as your mind wanders.

Lowering the tempo just a smidgeon, he's found himself painting from a vibrant palette that isn't governed by the tight rules of drum & bass, aligning himself more with the Biceps and Special Requests of the world and the sounds really shine as a result. Review: We have been enjoying the early transmission from Swiss label Active Life Worldwide and now, after almost four years since the last drop, they might have served up their best yet with this third EP. DJ Sommer brings the beats here once more having not only featured on the label's last various artists release but also the debut 12" back in March 2020. He now steps up to Madrid's leading electro label Distrito 91 with his The Lost Intruder EP featuring five analogue bangers. Review: As any keen breakbeat heads will know, DJ H's 'The Bass Project' EP came originally back in 1993 and is something of a classic in the genre. It is now getting reissued on nice heavyweight and pink marled vinyl in mad limited quantities but all mastered from a mint vinyl copy. The record infamously suffered from a questionable mixdown and so for this new reissue, the original samples have been re-sourced and layered over the restored files. Apparently, it took some 23 straight man-hours to get the work done - but it has paid off as these sound superb.

The electrifying duo are one again not mucking about here as they serve up some pumping techno bangers that have a playful heart and plenty of great designs buried deep in their unrelenting grooves. This new EP is another standout in that mood with Chicago original Bernard Badie behind the beats. It's a fiery one to start thanks tot he yelping female vocals that busy out of the mid tempo house drums. After that party-starting opening gambit comes the more wonky 'Bounce' with its tanging sound effects and taught bass. Review: Str4ta is a joint project that includes Gilles Peterson and Jean-Paul Maunick aka Bluey, inspired by 80s Brit funk bands. In 2022, Str4ta released their third album Str4tasfear for Gilles's label, Brownswood Recordings and this 12" stamped white label offers two dance remixes of two tracks from Str4tasfear. For the A-side, 'To Be As One' is remixed by Venom with vocal by Theo Croker. This soulful house version is jazzy and slightly psychedelic, that gives off a tremendous 70s vibe to it, while the second side sees 'Lazy Days' is remixed by Wallace, adding a bit more of a Latin house feel and features Emma Jean Thackray on vocals. Both versions turn the originals into the perfect dancefloor shufflers for eclectic people. This is the perfect 12" for house, soul and Latin DJs to express their more jazzy side.

Review: This is techno, but not as we know it from the Vigenere. Sparagamos (a fitting name given the word originally means to render, tear apart, or mangle) is behind these freaky beats but we nothing more about the artist. Suffice it to say they sure do have a fine grip of their studio and can manipulate sound in some thrilling ways. The opener is a warp-speed warehouse banger with distorted bass and manic energy, track two explores sludgy acid techno underworlds and track there is a twitchy cosmic workout with serene pads. 'Track 4' is a world of dystopian robotics while the flip side offers tripped-out, double-time dub techno, more acid intensity and experimental mind melters with exceptional sound design.

Review: 26 years ago Blame embraced the dark forces of the Sith (a good five years before the Revenge movie) - and it finally got a release in 2021. Now comes the VIP. Even more score-like and dramatic with its energy and intention, this will have you unleashing force destruction before you can even whip out your sabre. 'Lost Science' is another unreleased gem from the same late 90s era. Big jazzy drums, caverns of space and a sense of cosmic jazz that's hard to find in contemporary breakbeat music. The dark force is strong on this one.

Review: The fledgling but already notable UFO Series now looks to Italian producer and prodigious underground innovator Riciar Ghir for a captivating journey through the more energetic house realms, all with an outer space feel. 'Niriba Shuttle' opens with tribal percussion and progressive synths that are coloured by subtle acid lines. 'Silenzio' is slow, heavy and persuasive with its old school piano acting lighting up your soul. Review: Ornate Music has been serving up quality deepness since 2008 but it's been a while since we heard from them. Edinburgh based producer, Rai Scott, returns to Ornate Music, previously releasing on the imprint back in 2014. This long overdue followup to her Innershift EP brings ethereal atmospherics and hypnotising percussion. The opener is a dreamy and celestial vibe with gently rolling beats, while Version 2 is more defined by the smeared chords which spiral to the heavens. 'As Honest As She Lived' is another electric lullaby with well-crafted ambient pads and 'Nina' ends with layers of bells, glistening keys and shimmering melody that soothes the soul.
