Welcome To LA (4:03)
City Of Angels (4:02)
Review: Dam Funk is the true ambassador of West Coast boogie in the modern era, and his dreamy touch is unmistakable. Parisian funkateer David Zylberman knows what's up, and so he's reached out to Dam for some input on this silky smooth single which takes us into the heart of LA. The result is two cuts tipped way, way back for the smoothest of rides, all mid tempo 808 groove and lingering, mellow synth chords. If you were a fan of the breakthrough Toeachizown album which brought Dam Funk to wider attention, you're going to love this record.

Review: Brazilian producer Zopelar brings oodles of South Hemisphere sunshine to his splendid debut outing on Mother Tongue Records. Theer is so much goodness packed into his 7" its a surprise they didn't have to make it 12"s. 'Entre Viagens' is a languid dance with nimble percussion, sun worshiping synths and jazzy broken beats that keep you on your feet. 'Vista' is high class space funk with rugged analogue textures, crispy hits and plenty of Detroit electro funk stylings in the drums. It's a perfect meeting of Brazil, London and the Midwest.

Wild Weekend (1:36)
Review: Favourably compared to The Ramones during their early tenure, yet never managing to reach the same critical or commercial heights, The Zeros were one of the true first wave pioneers of punk, hailing from their sleepy San Diego city of Chula Vista, California. Originally released in 1978 as their second single following on from the previous year's 'Wimp' b/w 'Don't Push Me Around', the iconic 'Beat Your Heart Out' is easily the band's most vital contribution to their own legacy, thanks in no small part to being popularised by The Muffs' rendition in the 90s. Recreated from the OG pressing with 'Wild Weekend' on the flip, 'Beat Your Heart Out' is also infamously known for being the track the band opted to repeatedly play over and over again for the duration of a now legendry San Francisco performance. No other cuts, just that one single eight times in a row. Now, that's what we call punk.

Review: The Zeros were a pioneering punk rock band from Southern California who burst out in the late 70s before calling it quits at the turn of the decade. They had a spell of activity in the 90s, but it was their grip of early singles which cemented their legendary status, culminating in 'They Say That (Everything's Alright)' and 'Getting Nowhere Fast' in 1980. Short, sharp and catchy as hell, this is So-Cal punk rock at its finest, now repressed by Spanish label Munster on white 7" with the original artwork intact.

Review: Zed Bias has been a bass, dub and garage king since forever, but his star shows no signs of diminishing any time soon. For this one he has worked with Shumba Youth on a new single that finds him dipping into a world of dancehall and ragga. 'London Town' is heavy, with real bass weight, churning drums and fizzing digital synths under the superb bars from Shumba who muses on the state of London right now. Next to that are slithering leads and sci-fi pads to make for a fine future vibe. The acappella is served up on the flip for DJs who want to play.

Review: Black Label Society main man Zakk Wylde initially made a name for himself in the metal scene operating as Ozzy Osbourne's touring guitarist for many a moon, while most recently, he's currently filling the boots of the late great Dimebag Darrell on the Pantera reunion/tribute tour. In amongst the bearded shredder's hectic schedule is his Zakk Sabbath love-letter tribute act to the pioneering metal giants of a phonetically similar moniker. The trio, rounded out by bassist Robert "Blasko" Nicholson (Ozzy Osbourne, Rob Zombie) and drummer Joey Castillo (Danzig, Queens Of The Stone Age), are now set to unveil a 7" single of their cover of the iconic Paranoid closing track 'Fairies Wear Boots', which was originally intended as a touring exclusive but now will receive a follow up retail-wide distribution. Complete with an epic, faithful rendition of Master Of Reality deep cut 'Solitude' on the flip side, but peppered with enough sonic liberties to engage without invoking the ire of avid fans the world over, this is Sabbath worship done only the right way.

It'll Never Be Over For Me (2:57)
Review: It would be fair to say that Timi Yuro's "As Long As There Is You" is a sought-after single. Something of a "holy grail" amongst soul collectors, original copies of the 1969 7" on Liberty Records regularly change hands for upwards of 1,000 quid. Happily, you can now acquire a fresh copy for a fraction of the cost thanks to this facsimile Expansions reissue. Fuzzy, heartfelt, stomping and blessed with wall of sound style production, "As Long As There Is You" is the kind of sad-but-happy track that used to make Northern Soul dancers go weak at the knees. Yuro's Central American influences can be heard loud and clear on "It'll Never Be Over For Me", where Mariachi style trumpet lines and sweeping strings rise above a heavy, bossa-influenced groove.

Just in time for the more discerning holiday get-downs across the globe, Daptone indulges the privilege of introduce their newest singing sensations, The Yuletime Lifters. Backed by a who's who of Daptone session stalwarts, and featuring vocals by Ron Preyer (of fabled LA soul group The Younghearts), Torrence Brannon (current member of the Delfonics), and Clarence Matheney (Los Yesterday's multi-instrumentalist and former Red Fox road dog), the Yuletime Lifters serve up a funky, Latin-tinged mover steeped in love and positivity. Review: Brooklyn's Your Old Droog has made a name for himself with fine releases on the likes of Nature Sounds, many of which have had fans reminiscing about the fine mic work of the late great MF Doom. He uses artful imagery and unlikely couplets to paint vivid musical pictures with an inimitable East Coast twang. He has produced many of his beats himself but here he partners up with the one and only Madlib on 'The Return Of Sasquatch'. It is another killer joint with a mix of classic sounds and leftfield ideas. On the flip is a live rehearsal version of 'The Unknown Comic' which was produced by Edan.

Fans of hard-assed hip-hop need not worry though as this limited edition picture disc is here to save you. The title track is full of big raw horns and dark soul synths, menacing bars and low slung grooves. Review: The Soul Of Tommy Youngblood 1970 Kent LP had many fine tracks, especially 'Tobacco Road North' though it was not attributed to the rightful writer, Jimmy Radcliffe, at the time. The music has been sampled for various hip-hop adaptations, including one by Ghostface Killah of the Wu-Tang Clan, but the original stands on its own and deserves a 7" format. The Other Brothers 'Nobody But Me' is another UK Kent exclusive that sold out on its first Kent Select press and is still much sought-after and now expensive.

Part Of The Game (2:47)
Review: Inell Young was a New Orleans-based singer who recorded with Eddie Bo and also had a small clutch of solo singles in the late 60s-early 70s. Soul Jazz picked up on one of Young's rarest offerings, a beautiful single which came out some time in the 60s. They first reissued it in 2014 and it keeps getting repressed for very good reason - it's just a perfect slice of southern soul. 'The Next Ball Game' is a fiery, funky number with a clattering beat and plenty of overdriven energy, raw like the best music should be but oh so sweet thanks to Young's angelic voice. 'Part Of The Game' is a swooning heartbreak ballad that makes the perfect inversion to the firecracker of an A-side.

Review: Inell Young's What Do You See In Her is often said to be one of the most powerful soul songs to have ever come from the great New Orleans scene. Eddie Bo is of course the great man behind it - as he was so many of these great tunes from this place and this ear - with the voice of Inell adding the spice. Finding an original is hard as, and will also cost you very close to four figures, so snap this one up while you can. Both sides are pure gold.

Review: Another week brings another monster new 45 from the incomparable Athens of the North. This time out it is an early 80s bit of irresistible gospel, disco and boogie from Earl Young. 'Take Them In Prayer' is pure gold thanks to its tight and funky rhythm section, the delicate thinking on the keys and the heart aching vocals of earl Young that soar up top. Flip it over and on the reverse of this one and you will find 'Let Him Be Your Everything,' a quiet love song with only melancholic keys for company. It's the complete opposite of the a-side but is just as devastating for different reasons.

The sounds are said to be the building blocks for what went on to become known as the Champeta Criolla sound in the Caribbean coast of Colombia.

Well now, here they are, after plenty of high profile plays from the likes of BBC 6 Music's Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show And The Huey Morgan Show. The Yorkshire Film and Television Orchestra is a project from ATA label bosses Neil Innes & Pete Williams as well a multi-instrumentalist and arranger Steve Parry. Here they offer up two different but equally brillaint tunes - some high speed 60s funk with more than a hint of Northern Soul swing on the a-side, and the tender, blue eyed soul of Rachel Modest's 'I (Who Have Nothing).'

Review: The next tasty drop from the Fruits label, now well over 50 releases deep, is a pan-European affair featuring Bristol singer Joe Yorke and Swiss reggae band The 18th Parallel. The original on the A-side is a deliciously authentic and super sweet bit of rootsy lover's rock. 'End Of The Day' has lazy-as-you-like guitar riffs over loose drums with a falsetto from Yorke soaring high up in the sky on a warm summer's day. On the flip side comes the traditional dub version which is more empty and sparse to allow the reverb room to make its mark while the original vocal is also allowed plenty of space to bleed into.
